Who follow current trend about DAC technology know that current surge for R2R DACs. Schiit is at the forefront of this technique because of their designer Mike Moffet who is a father figure on digital audio conversion process, introduced three chips from non-audio field. It was his excellence because of which it was possible along with Schiit's proprietary closed form filter to produce such products. Mike Moffet had to borrow those chip (AD5791, AD5781, AD5547) from another field (Medical and Defense) because no renowned company have R2R DAC chip production line for Audio at this moment.

Metrum is another company who also introduced their own R2R module (Transient) to stick to their NON-OVERSAMPLING Philosophy, previously they used to do it with a secret industrial chip which they ditched recently for the sake of high speed property of their own module. Metrum also sell their Transient module as OEM pack.

Latest and little unexpected news (to some people who knows Chinese as Copy Master) is Audio-gd also have introduced their own R2R module DA M1 to replace the famous PCM1704 which is at the age of extinct class now. The new DA M1 module can support 24 bit - 384Khz files natively (up to 450MHz working frequency), can be used as NOS as well as with 8x OS. Fully FPGA supported or enabled. This module is also being sold for DIY purpose as OEM. Link-

Based on new Module they have introduced their new DAC- Singularity 19, price is much lower (600-650 USD) than PCM1704 based DAC/NOS-19. So the Chinese seems to have prepared their answer very well.

Singularity 19 have not been delivered to any one yet. Just waiting eagerly for the reviews.

Seems to be the age of off the shelf DAC have started quite strongly. I hope the main stream audio DAC (chip) manufacturer will evaluate the situation and they will re-introduce R2R chip/module for audio in large scale redesigning them incorporating the latest technological progress. Unless we have to spend a lot for the boutique brands, as you can see they are taking the advantage of the situation.
