Official Acer 5360 projector thread

I said I dont "think" :) I will go back home and use some white cloth. Even I hope its the wall..since my entire projector hope and josh sunk to a nadir yesterday night. I pray its the wall:sad:

Whenever you get that oily skin effect, pause the video. Get a pain A4 paper sheet. Tell someone to hold it on the wall at that spot. If the effect goes away, the culprit is the wall painting. A4 sheet has enough roughness to prevent such effects. Or you could also use a small white piece of cloth instead.

Did you try using some calibration disc/images to fine tune the settings?
If there are not many options to tweak in the pj, connect it to the pc/laptop and use the s/w settings from the graphics card / player.

Thanks everyone. By tweaking certain settings, I can get rid of it to some extent. May be if I try all controls I am hoping to get rid of it completely. The one setting I changed today that eliminated 90% of it was HDMI color or something like that. Initially it was set to Auto and I changed it to Full service or something like that and it kinda disappeared.

Regarding wall vs A4 paper..that didnt help. Thanks for the suggestions though.

Got my 5360 yesterday and fired it up immediately!! Here's a brief first impressions!
(This is my first projector and I tested it on a light pastel green colored wall which isn't particularly smooth, so please excuse me for the lack of any HT setup.)

Out of the box, the first thing I noticed was how the projector made squeaky noise of plastic when I held it. So build quality wasn't exactly something to feel great about.

Setting up was breeze and got the projector running a HD-rip of "Dark Knight". Did not measure projection distance but the image size was about 4.5 feet wide and about 2.5 feet high.

Below are the pros and cons which I observed:

Pros:

1. The projector has some serious lumen output!!! At my image size in a completely dark room, in dark cinema mode with eco mode on, the brightness was simply amazing!

2. Colour reproduction was quite nice considering I was using coloured wall as screen. The wall colour feature definitely helped and movie was very much watchable.

3. Fan is really quiet! I was expecting it to be louder and was pleasantly surprised! In fact, I has to put my ears close to projector to ensure that was no fan failure!!

4. Sharpness wasn't exemplary compared to LCDs but was good enough. I plan to have a wall prepared for projector screen so hopefully, picture quality will improve.

5. Contrast is something I would reserve my comment on as the wall I projected on is far from an ideal screen. However, a movie like "Dark Knight" was enjoyable with so many night sequences.

Cons

1. The first thing I noticed after turning on the projector was rainbow effect. This, from someone who had never previously observed rainbow effect. I could see the rainbows throughout the movie literally. The only way to avoid it was by concentrating on screen and keeping eye movement minimum. This did reduce perceptible rainbow but caused some fatigue.

2. Considering I plan to use projector mainly at night in dark room, I felt brightness to be bordering on discomforting. I do plan to increase the projection distance to about 9 feet so hopefully, things will improve.

To sum up, I am very happy with purchase and it looks like an investment well made!!
If only there was a way to reduce rainbow effect.

My viewing has been very limited due to lack of a good space to project it on.

Firstly congratulations on your purchase!!

I have not seen any serious rainbow effect. I only see it when I quickly move my eyes from one end to another - may be after few more hours it may be more apparent.

I agree that the build quality is not that great..or may be this is how projectors are built because of the heat they produce. When I press the top with some pressure it does feel that it moves a millimeter ...but one thing that does bother me is the heat...sometimes I can smell something burning...not sure some packing material remnants are being fried by the bulb!!!

Hi,

I need some urgent advice on ceiling mount. Reasons I think I want it is:

1) I do not want to place the projector within my kids reach
2) Other option is that I take it out only when I want to use it and then keep it in some closet. This means too much movements which might harm the projector?

Since I am more or less decided which side of my room I am going to project, wanted to seal a deal on mounts also.

Pros of such a mount is:

1) Fixed position - so no movements
2) Out of reach of children...at least the PJ..they can still catch hold of the remote
3) No need to play around with the settings since its decided only once

Cons I can think of is:
1) leaving it in open means it will attract dust
2) The cost of buying and installing the mount
3) Not sure if I can unscrew the PJ myself in case I want to take it someplace else.

Please let me know if there is anything else I need to be worried about ceiling mounts.

Also assuming the most of your votes are for the mount - are there any specific brands I need to look forward to or they all are similar?

Based on specs of couple of them - I understand that they can be moved up and down. But once the height is decided I can also tilt their angle as well?

Thanks in advance for your help. My last batch of US colleagues are full so I need to buy it in Bangalore. Following are some options. Please let me know your views. Thx

Hi,

Well, remember: larger the height of the stand and thinner the pipe material, larger the chances of oscillating the picture. (more like a vibrations) as it doesnt get 100% steady at both ends.

You can always wrap the PJ by cloth from all sides while on its mount when not in used for couple of days. This will not be full fledged permanent solution, but can eliminate the movement to great extent.

Pasting from another thread so that the buyer of this projector also knows what screen I am using!

Ok..finally ordered and got my projector screen.

Grandview apparently a Canadian company that makes decent screens. Like all companies..they too get it manufactured in China.

Liberty seems to be a Hyderabad based company that has a JV with Grandview and hence their screens are called Liberty Grandview.

They sell many types of screens - their own brand is called Liberty selling 120 incher for around 7-8K I guess - instalock version. The Grandview has a MRP of around 15K.

I bought my Grandview from their Blore distributor for 13,700 (12k Plus taxes). Maybe if I had negotiated could have got it a grand or two cheaper but I ran out of patience.

The screen including the screen holder has a premium finish to it. Mr. Solanki of Liberty Hyd said the LIberty brand is cheaper because its fibreglass and Grandview is something else ...he said Grandview and allied products were like BMWs and Mercedes of the Screen world. Guess that a bit of sales talk..am more than happy if this screen turns out to be Maruti Versa of the screen world....my favorite car carries that carries 8 adults and 2 children for a MRP of 5 lacs only!!!!! total paisa vasool!!

Hi,

Yesterday got my monoprice 3d Converter and have couple of questions.

(1) When I connect my laptop to receiver via HDMI and receiver to TV via HDMI, I can output my laptop videos to TV. However when I take the output from the receiver and plug it into my projector instead of TV - it refuses to show up on projector and every 5 seconds I see my laptop screen blinking- typically what you see when your display is moving from laptop to a secondary screen - except this happens every 5 seconds..so I guess this means the laptop is trying to output except it is not happening...any idea why this happens? what is it that receiver to projector via HDMI is doing that receiver to TV is not doing? The issue with this is that I am unable to play any of my hard drive movies to the projector. I am pretty much limited to tata sky to projector or blu ray to projector via receiver

(2) secondly when I connected my monoprice - 3d content is on my laptop. So laptop to monoprice via HDMI, then monoprice to receiver via HDMI and then receiver to projector via HDMI. In this config, surprisingly unlike (1) above, atleast the image from laptop is being projected on my screen except 3d is not playing well. I still see side by side and lots of flickering. There aren't a whole lot of options on the monoprice. OPtion 2 on it is DLP projector which I selected. Similarly on my 5360 I selected DLP as 3d source..what wrong am I doing here?

I also posted here. Hoping to get a resolution today as its a holiday

Take things one step at a time-- For Item 1 follow the following steps.

1) Turn everything off-- when I mean off-- unplug the power to all devices and make sure that they are shut down
2) Connect the laptop to receiver
3) Connect receiver to projector
4) Turn on Projector, then receiver, then laptop-- in this order
5) See if this provides video on your Projector
6) Also if this is not working-- What is happening to audio during this time?

Hi..tried and no luck...when the projector keeps searching for source,,,everytime HDMI comes up, my laptop flickers trying to output then fails...then another 5 seconds ..same thing repeats

Take things one step at a time-- For Item 1 follow the following steps.

1) Turn everything off-- when I mean off-- unplug the power to all devices and make sure that they are shut down
2) Connect the laptop directly to projector-- using the same hdmi cable which is currently used between the laptop and receiver
3) Turn on Projector, then turn on laptop
4) still no proper image-- replace hdmi cable between laptop and projector
5) Make sure that the connections are solid-- not loose

Ok..I removed all the 4 HDMI cables which are a mix of 1.3 and 1.4 and plugged each one directly from laptop to projector and all worked..hence nothing wrong with cables.

Anyways..I just plugged all of them again and for some weird reason now it works

Also opened my 3D DLP glasses and my 3d works well. Again first impressions were that 3d on my plasma was better. I had spent many days downloading a 15gb rip of avengers 3d and frankly it seemed to suck.

after trying few more rips..finally i settled on my LG demo video and this one really shone on my 3d - I got two versions...one SD version and one long HD version...the longer one that starts with a guy playing tennis....was really good.

now I got some questions:

Clearly when I compare the same movie between my plasma and projector..plasma seems to be better.

since I always have XBMC issues, I usually use GOM player since it seems to play everything flawlessly.

My monoprice too has a 3d effects increase and decrease button..but not sure if it works on native 3d....or just 2d to 3d conversion.

so net net...am happy with 3d but yet to get that full pop up effects. Problem may not be entirely with the projector or the monoprice.

does the application with which I play 3d also make a difference?

what other things do I need to keep in mind to enhance the 3d experience?

Also one other thing I noticed..these 3dLP glasses..though heaver than my cheapo samsung for plasma tv - are very comfortable and 3D is much better - not interms of popups but the picture is very clear. When I watch 3d using my cheap samsung glasses on my panny plasma..I clearly see that thing - distortion or ghosting or whatever its called wherein you see shadows everywhere.

will watch more movies and update my experience.

many thanks to THTPRO for all his help:clapping::clapping::clapping:

The monoprice unit is a 3D converter. It's not the same adapter as the optoma. Probably its ignoring the 3d input. It's down-converting it to 2D and then up-convert to 3D.

All the description of that product tells that it will not convert 2D to 3D. Your plasma is native 3D, so it will show better output than the converted output of monoprice unit. Best way to check it use it with your plasma. See if you get the same effects as the projector.

well..I am not trying to covert 2d to 3d. I am playing HSBS files from my laptop. Apparently this projector needs a 120hz output which my laptop cant and hence need monoprice.

my tv has that option to convert HSBS into 3d.

again anyone living in Blore can drop in and let me know their views. Thx

Hi..

after a long time tried to connect my laptop to my projector via receiver and same issue as posted in above threads..everytime input shows as HDMI on projctor my laptop blinks and after a second is back normal and projects moves from VGA to S video to HDMi again and again searching for a signal...any new advice please?

1) my projector connected to receiver has no issues playing tata sky
2) my projector connected directly to my laptop via hdmi has no issues

its only when i connect my laptop to receiver to projector I have this issue

I can use 2) above to watch video..but how to output audio from my laptop to receiver?
