Onkyo Vs Denon

Hi Khandelwal,
Just curious,
If you have a stereo setup already, why do you need an AVR to do 70% duty for music (I assume that by music you mean stereo music on CD).

BTW, I haven't done A/B music comparison between Onkyo or Denon in same audition-session, so can't give pers opinion here, however, most of the reports by others say that Denon AVR is preferable for music.

Regds,

Hi Sonosphere,
I am not creating a new setup or looking for HTIB but upgrading my receiver as I have run out of HDMI ports. I already have Jamo speakers and Stereo setup with roland Monitors(please see the signature for my setup).
Need inputs on onkyo 508 VS Denon 1611 receivers

Thanks for your response!

just to clarify Car stereo and My home studio with monitors is is for me(which is use most of the time) and A/V setup is for rest of my family and their content is in Ipod /and xtreamer
after a bit of reserach it looks like I am inclining towards onkyo as it has most value for the bucks spent.
1611 is 5.1 in india which is more expansive than 508 while 508 is 7.1 with multiroom support. Also As I have Onkyo RI dock it will be supported well by onkyo. since it has burr-brown DAC, I expect better audio quality than the one I have now.

no single shop for A/V componenets. the only one who claims to be dealing with these does not have a shop and does not even respond. everytime I need a component and need a audition I have to visit delhi/mumbai

I wish I was living in a bigger city or the situation changes here

Even I'm looking to buy the Onkyo 508, along with 528 speaker package, for 40ks. I believe it's a good deal, for 40ks, 7.1 is awesome.

instead of 1611 I am now comparing Denon 1911 VS 508/608 as I need multizone which is not available with 1611.
there are other options also like Yamaha 567.
Onkyo and Yamaha both have burr brown DAC which I am not sure should be better than AKM(denon).
Video upscaling looks better in denon but I don't really need that
Both yamaha and denon have direct USB playing.

Now I am really confused. is there any store in delhi where I can compare these side by side ?

Even here in chennai, every store has its own fav amp. i think its gonna be hard to find all the amps at the same place.

If you can extend your budget a little get an Onkyo TX-NR708. Its around 60k. It has pre-outs, so you can feed it to an amp later. It has network streaming support from a media server and USB Playback. Its firmware can be upgraded via Ethernet or USB.

Onkyo has Burr-Brown DAC, which i believe is more musical. It processes audio in a more natural way like an analog device. Denon has Burr-Brown only in their high-end avr's.

As you said, the video processing is better with denon. Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processor is not very good when compared. The Onkyo AVR's with Reon HQV processor is much better with video processing and upscaling and they cost a lakh, of course with more audio power also. Check out the Onkyo 1008, 3008, 5008 AVR's. If you don't need the HDMI 1.4a, you can go for Onkyo TX-SR876. But again its gonna cost you around 90k.

You must remember that all modern receivers have very low THD measurements and as such there may not be a significant audible difference between brands. What matters is the feature set that a particular receiver offers and how that matches with your present and future requirements. A major factor affecting sound quality is how your system interacts with your room and hence it would be wise to choose a model that offers Audyssey Multi-EQ. Also, if you plan to purchase speakers that have an impedance of under 8 ohms, you should purchase a receiver that is 4-ohm stable, otherwise you will hear distortion at higher volumes and your receiver will run very hot. Amazon US will have very useful reviews for all models that you are interested in and you should check them out before making a decision. Hope this helps!

Thanks to the non responsiveness of local dealer and ProFX, as usual I now plan to compare and decide when I visit delhi/mumbai.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions

it is blessing in disguise for a people like me who would have spent more if the products were available locally or dealers were more professional.:clapping:

you can have a word with mack @ sk audio solutions for denon (profx). there's a dealer for yamaha behind indprastha tower (in the same building where reliance fresh is located). you can audition onkyo at e-zone at TI (contact niraj).

hope this would help you

I had listened to Denon 1611, along with Polk RM 6750. But I decided to buy Onkyo TX-SR508 along with the onkyo HT728 speaker package. The Onkyos sound way way better, the sound is more spacious, and to be honest, I did not find the wow factor in the Denon combo, may be it was because of a slightly weaker sub of the polks.
But then again, I am no audiophile....

Thanks Aazam
The mightly local dealer I am referring to is the SKaudio itself... :) I have been chasing them but it feels like instead of buying a 1911 I am asking them for a loan..
the dealer behind indraprastha tower is more into music instruments and they don't have any receiver for audition though they can supply on order.
have checked E zone and they have onkyo 303, 304, 307 and 504, 505 and denon 1509 which will be more of downgrade rather than upgrade

onkyo 508 is definitely better

may be ! but I have decided in favor of denon 1911 and it definitely sounds better than my previous onkyo! probably 608 is also a good option but I am more than happy with my new purchase

Congrats on your purchase!

I also compared onkyo SR508 and denon 1611 AVR multiple times with the same setup at Modern World, Bangalore. I went to the shop thinking onkyo but in the end I got denon 1611. Somehow I felt denon is musically better than onkyo. Also denon has a rich feel to its sound than onkyo when playing some of the scenes from Transporter movie. I am happy with my Denon :yahoo: even though I am playing them using old speakers from my Sony MVR888D music system and a Sony sub-woofer SA WM-500.
