My son needs some bookshelves that can play loud without strain but do not scream (not bright).

Due to lack of floor space in his bedroom (about 210 sq. ft with 9.5 ft ceiling) the bookshelves will be wall mounted.

They will driven by an AVR (only 2 chanels need be used) and will be supplemented by a subwoofer (to limit excursion to the bookshelf's woofer).

Budget about 40K per pair.
I like the NHT Three Bookshelf as they are easily wall mounted
The other speaker I like is JBL 4312E. For a speaker of it's size it can rock.

Now I need more well informed opinions.

Why not 2 wall mountable bookshelves and a Matching Sub in same budget?

I already got an AVR and an active subwoofer I can give my son. I now only need a pair of bookshelves (say 20" x 12" x 10") to complete the system.

Guys my son is 9. I expect he will grow into a teenager who will want to tear the paint from the walls. I know I was one. :o

So I want a speaker he can use for say 8-10 years and maybe even take with him to his dorm room (dont laugh, all parents live in the eternal hope that their wards will eventually go to college). I fear speakers like the MA RX2 might not survive his onslaught.

May I ask where you are getting a pair (2x) JBL 4312E for 40k? New or Used?

Excellent choice.

There is stuff that goes louder, it begs the question how loud do you want it?

Klipsch? Robust build and sound. Bright though.

Heard the RB 81 it is very bright. Tried the JBL LS40 too but the bass was a tad too dry. Almost nothing below 50Hz.

Friend has a pair willing to sell to me.

which active sub woofer is that??

JBL E series.

I would strongly recommend the JBLs.

They will likely put out about 110-114db continuous if the AVR has enough voltage, if that is sufficient output for you it is the obvious choice IMO.

Thanks. This is eaxactly what I thought. I have heard the older 4312 (the one with the cone LE25 tweeter) and that was a rocking speaker but that was 25 odd years ago and the game has changed since.

Can't argue with oldschool JBL :) I have read that the sound signature has not changed much for the new 4312 but the 4307 is a "new sound" not based on any previous speaker which is clearer and more "forward". Personal tastes will dictate, as it always does.

JBL does well in Japan, a lot of their good stuff is only released there. It would be nice if the rest of the world got to play with those speakers.

By chance have you heard the Dance 5s? I would like to hear those...

How much are they? Where can I get an audition?

Shanti/Bhagwan had spoken very highly of turbosound when when we had a chat on the phone a couple of months ago.
Not too sure of prices and place to audition.

However considering its a professional install . I think it should be able to take a lot of rough use and produce the paint stripping sound that your kid would soon migrate to as he gets older.

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
