Not my choice! I want to be able to record, so I go for soundcard/interface. I also have a bit of a fascination for the home-studio/semi-pro stuff, though I have no use for things like mic preamps (and I've got them on another bit of kit if I do need them!). Was using a RME PCI card. Now using an Echo Audiofire firewire interface. All this is for my PC monitor speakers and headphones. If I want to feed sound to the hifi, no longer within cable's reach as it was in my old house, I use ... a Squeezebox!dac of your choice?
External DACs are the darling 'extra box' of the forum, so you can find plenty of advice from others, at various budget levels, even including phenomenal

Personally, I find it hard to accept a DAC, that does 10% of the function of a high-end audio interface being priced at ten times the price. Well, that's hifi ... and shopping for gear is a very individual experience
