Hello Guys,

I will be buying a new dlp projector this week and have a question about storage. For me all projectors are used for work only for certain presentation events. The rest of the time they will sleep thats it. The usage will be like just 12 to 15 times in a year for about 6 hrs each time. This is extreme sparse usage and my previous optoma hd 70 has only done about 200 hours in 3 years. I bought it for 85k and today its ready to be scraped. Because the entire lens has got a fungus like white cotton spores grown on the inside of the lens.

Optomas tie up service centre says they will TRY to clean it. Replacement lens they dont know, how much it will cost, or if they can even get it. HORRIBLE Service from Optoma. Dont burn your fingers.

So this time ill have to be very careful with storage. I want to know if i can pack the projector into a Vacuum Bag. The ones which have a vacuum cleaner suction valve. I thought ill drop a sachet of silica gel into the vacuum bag before sealing the projector into it. It keeps it moisture free and dust free. Plus due to the transparency it allows light to pass in. All of which are moisture deterents.

Plz let me know what you feel.

Thanks

I really did not know that such a problem exists with projectors! But IMO, even if this is the issue, someone must be able to clean the internals of the pj?? I am somehow not comfortable by the idea of disposing-off an 85K costing projector with just 200 hrs on it!

However, I will be watching this thread closely as I plan to keep my PJ for longer!

Regards.

I will be watching this thread closely as well. I have a SIM2 C3X projector which I need to keep in storage till I decide how to convert one of my small bedrooms into a HT room. Till then this projector (which recently has had a nice clean up with a new bulb put in) will not be used. It is also a 3-chip DLP type projector and as it is quite expensive, I hope to get some good advice on how to store it well.

i hope perosns who own and take care expensive camera can give some idea about the lense case.
i belive its definitly solvable.
fungus is dangerous they can generate themselves...even if you keep loads of silica gel.
really felt sorry about the case..only 200 hours..and lens condition this..

Sad to hear that you are scraping oldPJ, if you plant to sell ,kindly quote yor expected price

Just wondering, why don't you get a projector on rent whenever needed instead of buying such an expensive product for such a scarce usage.

You can always watch movies with your wonderful projector in which ever room you wish because it does not occupy any space on ground level other then the speakers that too if they are towers.

Indeed once you have a dedicated room then it will be extra ordinarily great.

Im a professional photographer and I store my lenses and cameras in a dehumidifying cabinet where I have managed the temp and humidity level.

Do we need to do something special for the projector or its lens ?

I thought, we simply place it once and never touch it, until the lamp gets expired.

I have no experience with PJs yet . Im thinking to build one dedicated room soon.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
