Hi all,

Finally went ahead with my long cherished dream and ordered an Epson TW6100.Now, the second dilemma - getting a proper screen.

1) Varay Mumbai from where I got the PJ quoted me 16k all inclusive for a 10x6 instalock , manual pull down, 16:9 screen. From the PC calculator, it seems the screen can accomodate around 138" diagonally since the screen would be 120inch x 72 inch.Is my assessment correct?

2) If so, is it recommended, if throw distance and projector placement are not a problem?

3) A local dealer quoted me 18k for a Grandview 120 inch screen. What wil be the width and height dimensions of a 120 inch screen? Will it also be 10x6 and remaining portions blacked out?

Thanx in advance for any help with my queries.

Use the projector screen calculator for the correct screen size you need. Big is good but unless the projector is bright enough, you will get dim picture or worse "washed out".

You should go for gray screen to enhance contrast and black levels.

Hi, 120" screen make sure it is in 16:9 ratio. In 120" the Screen width will be 105" and Ht is 59". You are right that in 10 x 6 screen its 138" diagnol. I will suggest go with 120" Screen as you are not going for motorised. As in bigger sizes motorised or fixed frame screens are recommended. Congrats for the Projector its surely the best choice.

Thanx bro....but from the reviews, the PJ is pretty bright and my intentions are night time movie watching/gaming.So, I am hoping this baby can fill up the 130+ inch screen successfully.I have also read few people using this to power 150 inchers.

Also, the dealer I spoke with locally said he just installed a grey screen for 3D and it was so dull and uninspiring(don't remember the PJ).The picture was too dim that the buyer ordered a white screen immediately,as he wanted the setup mainly for 3D.Since I also have intentions to play 3D blurays quite often, I think it would be best to go with a white screen for now. What do u think?

Hi mate,

Yea,its 16:9 only - that was the first criterion I passed to them on making the inquiry.Since this is a long term investment covering at least 2 years, would like to go for the biggest as I have always been a BIGGER THE BETTER guy.Once i drew up the 135" screen on the wall, my mind is not letting me downgrade haha :) But if there are serious problems with that big a size and non - motorized, I would rather go with the 120" than being BIG AND SORRY.
Have sent u a PM regarding the matter.

Imrahn,

Contact AV vision Hyderabad. They are the importers of Grandview screen.
I spoke to them and they directed me to their Chennai distributor from where i bought my Grandview 106 inch screen.

AV-VISION EQUIPMENTS (INDIA) (P) Ltd.

Thanx a lot mate, will call them up tomorrow and see.

The projector manual must have all recommendations, follow them, use a tape and get it done by some one (if possible more than one) who usually does it, no need of a specialist, its all about drilling-clamping-fitting-adjusting-readjusting

I bought Grandview 120" last month, it should cost you around 11k, contact Pranab of technoguru, its too heavy for a person, should weight a whopping 30Kg

Get a Monoprice directional HDMI, they perform quite nicely

get a day off, hook everything and enjoy 1080p

100"(49"x87")= 6k(manual), 11k(motorized without remote), 16k(motorized with remote)

110"(54"x96")=7k(Manual), 12k(motorized without remote), 17k(motorized with remote)

120"(58"x104")=10k(Manual), 15k(motorized without remote), 18k(motorized with remote)

Add 4k to these prices for a Grandview Manual with CSR(the system that slowly retracts the screen) & add 4k to the motorized with remote screen prices to get the respective Grandview prices... Grandview does not have motorized without remote option...Also u can add 2k instead of 4k to calculate the prices of another brand they stocked called picture perfect(its priced in between Pioneer & Grandview)... I will try to explain the diff terminology that I have used in this post...

1)Manual:- This just means that it is a manual pull down screen...
2)Manual with CSR:- This too is a Manual pull down screen but when u want to retract the screen after using it it retracts slowly... A great feature to have...
3)Motorized with remote:- This means that the screen is motorized with a RF remote control... The costliest option... Not my personal choice considering the increased cost & the fact that u have to deal with 1 more damn remote on ur table...
4)Motorized without remote:- Like the name says, it does not come with a RF remote... What it does come with is a wired switch to use the screen... I liked this option as the wire can be extended to place the switch on anywhere on the wall which is convenient to u...Like next to ur couch... & u end up saving 5-7k coz u save on the RF remote... So u get the joy of a motorized screen at a bang for buck price point...

I would further like to add when I visited the screen manufacturers facility I tried to compare the screen material of Grandview & Pioneer... What I found was there was no diff at all... It was the same shade of white & the texture was the same so was the thickness... Infact I would like to seen someone do a blind test of the materiels & try to tell the diff... Another point my Uncle who recommended pioneer made was that they use almost all metal parts to manufacture pioneer screens where as the grandview ones are manufactured in China & they use a lot of plastic parts... My Uncle deals in DJ equipments & so he knows these screens are very durable... He has been using them for the last 15 years or so...So have most of the Audio professionals in Mumbai... Grandview sells more coz of its brandname... Like u ask anyone about bose they will instantly recognize the brand... But when u pit Bose against other systems like Onkyo or Yamaha then u will know which has real value for money & which does not
Hope this post helped u guys out...

PS almost forgot to post the contact info

If u are spending above 12-15k its better to buy a motorized screen from pioneer(my personal opinion...a 120inch motorized screen should cost u in the range of 15k... Also if u want a bigger screen they can manufacture it according to ur needs(size specifications etc) ...

rajadeep,

These Poineer screens does it comes with tubular motor?.

Most of the dealers insisted to go for a tubular motor for screen sizes more than 100 inch....They say the normal motor (they call it softy motor in liberty) might not last long.. I had to settle for a manual screen as grandview motorized screen was more than 20K.

My company purchased around 25 Liberty 7 * 5 motorized screens (Liberty Lite and Liberty view models) 5 months back and now 6 of those screens are not working....

While a motorized screen looks awesome and impresses everyone, why spend extra on something that brings no intrinsic value? Spend more on the screen that delivers better quality picture, enhances image, contrast, etc. You will also have to run a trigger signal wire from projector to motorized screen.

+1.
I have a 150" screen, gain is 1.1. No brightness issues at 1100 hrs.

yes, go with a white screen.

I know the feeling. But from my experience, you won't have any issues with 135". Moreover, you can make picture more punchier if the back wall is all black and first couple feet of the side walls is also black. There is so much less light to reflect back on the screen and wash out picture. BUT, the biggest gain is in 3D immersion. If the walls around screen are all black, then in 3D, the perceived depth is very large because you are not seeing any surroundings and your room. The depth is almost infinite in movies like IMAX:Hubble 3D, IMAX Space Station etc. All you see is infinite dark space and stars. Very good effect on normal 3D titles too.
