I bought Asus Media player which can detect my 2TB HDD and can play a wide variety of format without issues, prior to that I also connected my computer to act as a media PC, but the results were not so great compared to a dedicated media player, I might have had issue with my NVida card...

Even i am thinking of buying media player but short of budget as of now. Will explore this option in some time

I was able to get DTS sound while playing movie from laptop.

But got another issue, I downloaded 2 movies from net. Audio file as AAC and AC3 but i can see only Multi in as audio option on AVR
For other 2 downloaded movies which has DTS format, i can see DTS option on AVR and A/52 over S/PDIF option in VLC media player

What could be the reason for not getting dolby digital sound for these files?
