Hi,

Recently purchased some OST of movies (combos) of R D Burman music movies like The Train, Apna Desh, Paraya Dhan, Anamika etc.

The sound quality is pathetic. Any reason for this?

Are these converted from Mp3s?

Even the cassettes that I have sound better than these. So disappointing.

Any good source for R D Burman CDs anyone can suggest?

Actually nowadays Saregama don't have their masters and they have just arranged the stuff from here and there/cassettes/VCDs/ in whatever quality. One of my known told me that couple of decades back The Gramphone Company (earlier HMV, now Saregama) lost their all Masters because of fire in their Master Spools/Vinyl Store (Godown) however I haven't found any news about that so not sure if it is true but as we can see the quality of their ACDs may be it is.

Today they just use files from their server (not sure what the quality they have uploaded, seems they are already in mp3 format) to make ACDs or MP3.
You can visit HAMARACD.com (Saregama owns this website too) and compile your own collection from their database and get that compilation delivered to your address.

For better quality songs you can try EMI Audio CDs (Made in USA, England, UK etc) Probably they are better but I don't like some stuff on EMI too. But the 90's songs on EMI CDs are awesome and far superior than the Saregama/HMV ones.

The Train was on Polydor/Music India (later Polygram) now Universal.
Apna Desh, Paraya Dhan and Anamika are on HMV.

The Train, Paraya Dhan and Anamika should be good.
I wonder why Saregama have many songs in double echo like
1. Mere dil mein aaj kya hai (Daag) even the whole album was in double echo
2. Meri Bheegi Bheegi Si (Anamika)
3. Gham Ka Fasana (Manchali)
4. Ek Ajanabe Haseena se (Ajnabee)
(Saregama has this song but with dialogue which comes in mid of song) they have ripped this song from movie (seems pirated VCD) and in PATHETIC quality. But on Vinyl it is awesome and all the stanzas are continuously without any dialogue.

There are many examples like this.
etc

Better source available would be Vinyl for sure.

Kolkata is well known place for Vinyls, you can ask to your friends if they or any one from their circle owns Record player and good collection.

Just FYI I checked the dates on the CD files (modified date) and it says
1st January 1995.

Interestingly all the Saregama CDs have the same date recorded for all the CD files.

If the date is really 1995 then I am sure it is post computer Era atleast here in India.

But if the date is manipulated on the computer or device where these were trans coded then that is separate issue.

I am fine as long as these are NOT converted back from Mp3 and burnt to CD

I have a few RD LP's and also CD's of the same, the sound quality is so bad on CD's that I now listen exclusively to LP's for the old hindi songs. On a side note a music shop owner recently told me that Sa re ga ma has been sold to Sony music. I hope that they had a few masters left to sell.

Yes, Saregama has been sold to Sony Music last year and in future we will get all these movie titles on Sony Music. But definitely Sony will not release complete Saregama catalog in the market.
