Re-purposing an old music system - Need your help.

I have a very old integrated 185W Pioneer system from the late 80's and am not to keen to get rid of it since it still works quite well. I do not use the CD drives anymore but rather plug in my an ipod through a stereo to RCA cable and the sound quality works for me.

My family is moving to a new house and we want to retain the system but change the speakers to small satellites or jewel cubes since the provision for speaker wiring is closer to the ceiling than the floor and the large Pioneer bookshelf speakers (Rated at 75W each and Impedance of 6 Ohms) would look out of place.

I am okay with sound degradation by switching to smaller speakers since this system will be placed in a small entertainment area and will play very low volume background music.

So I have Two questions:

1) What speakers should I get to replace the bigger Pioneers?I like Pure Acoustics Lord 770 4" Speakers - And at around $50 a pair, they are pretty decently priced. Should I buy these and would these be compatible with the Pioneer system? Or should I look else where and if so, please make a suggestion.

2) We have a second room that has also been wired for speakers, and were wondering if we can connect a second pair of speakers to the Pioneer system. In that case, I would pick up an additional pair of satellites (Like the PA Lords). The only thing is I am not sure how the connection works, i.e. do 4 pairs of red and black speaker wires go into the system and does the wattage drop or is there some sort of a 'splitter' device that I have to buy or is this not possible at all?

Would appreciate your advice on these two questions. Also attaching a picture of the old Pioneer system so you can see connection options in the back.

If you are going to use satellites then you will need a subwoofer as well. Doesnt look as if the Pioneer has a sub pre-out. You seem to have only one set of speaker terminals so you can attach only one pair. A good set of Bookshelves would be your best bet eg Q Acoustics 2020. There is an RCA terminal next to the speaker terminals in your pic, but I cant make out whats written below it, is it a preout?

Really don't want to go book shelf route simply because we want a really unobtrusive setup. These speakers will be mounted at almost 10 feet high. Do I need the sub to generate bass to compensate for the satellites or is this more of an absolute requirement to make the system work? I have not use a sub on this system yet and it's worked fine for me and like I said earlier, we plan on playing light mood music when entertaining so I don't need something thumpy and loud.

You are right - There is only one provision therefor I was asking:
a) Can I attach two pairs of speakers to one set of speaker terminals?
b) If the above is not possible, is there a splicer \ splitter etc. that can create two sets of terminals?
