Hi,

I have a sony dvd player that claims to do some upscaling and has a HDMI output. Now my question is if I have to connect to A/V receiver that has HDMI in and take the HDMI out from the A/V and connect to HDMI LCD TV such as sony. will the audio be from TV and from the 5.1 speakers attached to A/V. This may be a silly question but my thought was that HDMI integrates audio and video and hence this question.

Sony DVD Player claiming video upscaling - I think this is just a marketing gimmick and I don't see reason why a DVD player without having the capability to play bluray discs would ever need a HDMI output. Is this right ?

AVRs typically have the option of routing the Audio to
a) Spkrs only
b) Spkrs + HDMI out of the AVR (useful if you want to pass-thru your cable-TV via STB-AVR-TV route.)
You need to check the manual of your AVR and see if this is an option in your AVR.

I think the max that is sent by the DVDP via component cable is 1080i, and if the DVDP can upscale to 1080p, you will need a HDMI connection. Can't comment on upscaling of Sony DVDP.
