Hi All,

I have a generic question that as of now I have videocon d2h normal SD set top box. recently I have purchased LED TV and an AVR, which I will be setting up this week end and I will also upgrade the set top box to HD.

Right now I have connected my SD set top box with normal BNC cable RF out to the 42 inch TV, but the picture quality of all the SD channels is not at all good, I felt the CRT televisions were better in that case too good and sharp picture.

So I had a question that if I upgrade the box to HD one and connect the box to TV through HDMI or component cable will the quality of normal SD channels improve than today ....?

Is there any difference in reception quality of SD channels in the SD and HD box ....? or only HD channels will be true digital and have good quality

Regards,

I have videocon HD and SD boxes, I could not find any difference in SD content between them.

In theory the quality might improve if your D2h box can provide better up scaling ... but i do not believe an upscaler costing 2500 can beat the one within your TV.

CRTs are better displays compared to LED/LCD/plasma ... but they just don't scale.

But i can bet you will be amazed by the quality of HD channels, and technically there no reason why SD channels will look better in your new display.
Your source has only 1/5x pixels ( resolution ) so your TV have to create them using some logic. (upscale)
Your new TV have the wrong aspect ratio, so have to stretch the pixels etc...

I know you would have enjoyed the TV in the showroom ... while they were playing those glittering HD demo videos ...
Go ahead upgrade your D2h to HD and watch HD ... the magic will come back to your TV.
Throw some HD content ... movies music photos ... anything ... your TV will surprise you pleasantly.

My ans: I could not find any difference in SD content between SD box and HD box.

I have Airtel STB & picture Q of SD is good enough to enjoy on LCD.RF cable will not give good PQ.

The SD box is using RCA connection which is analogue. But the HD box invariably use HDMI which is digital. So your box is directy feeding the TV with digital signals. This will have some improvement in the HD box. Do not expect much improvement as the pixel density in SD is only one fifth of HD

I had updated my STB to HD and yes I could find the difference in SD channel quality as well it is improved certainly

But as eveyr body has said in this forum Videocon D2H customers are crying for 5.1 audio....:-(

I do not have any idea about the technical difference, though I am a techie person I have not gone deep into it.

But I could obviously see the difference in the SD PQ.

The only difference from my point of view is HD box and HDMI cable connection...

On topic, For any comparison whatsoever between SD and HD, they should at the least be broadcast in the same widescreen ratio. If all SD channels are 4:3 stretched to 16:9, there is not even remotely any sense in doing that comparison whether its from HD box or SD box or any highest end upscaler.

Most HD broadcast are perhaps done with high "megapixel" resolution, but very poor bitrate.
Thus you get blocky artifacts when the scenes have rapidly changing content.
Something like flashing light in the scene will bring a poor bitrate stream down to its knees.

But why would someone do that? Well bitrate is the king. Bitrate determines the channels capacity. Low bitrate means more subscribers per channel!
And the idiotic customer is anyway only concerned with the screen resolution of 720p/1080i/1080p etc.
