Hello all,
I am buying a SONY 42 W900B BRAVIA Full HD 3D TV (@73k) for my room(10ft by 11ft). Seating position is 6 feet from TV and 1 feet from back wall.(wardrobe eats up the rest of space)
First I went to Sony center to purchase a HT system with 3d bulray player (BDV-E4100). But then after some research online, I found that i should go for other HTIB's or setup my own. As i new to this, I have few queries.
->People say that AV receivers can be upgraded in future. What do mean by upgrade the av receiver? what can i do extra whch i cant with a sony HTIB
->Can I purchase the sony HT(BDV-E4100) and if the player is damaged in future, can i buy an AV receiver and use the Sony speakers?
->Say if i buy a Yamaha HITB(YTH-299), can i add or change the YAMAHA speakers at a later stage? Is this what is called upgradable? But how will i know what speakers will go with that YAMAHA? the numbers and figures?
->I stay in Bhubaneswar(Orissa) and people here donot even understand AV receivers or amps, so no question of getting any product here. I only saw one piece of YTH-299 @ Reliance digital for Rs.37,000. But when i tested it, I found the audio qiality get distorted @ high volumes. And moreover they couldnot give a demo of the 5.1 capabilities as all speakers were atacked together. So whatever I will purchase will be a blind buy, just by reading forum reviews.
->the YTH-299 had active subwoofer, but the bass was not punchy. It was on a lower side. Infact the Sony speakers sounded much better than YAMAHA's
->this is why i was thinking, buy the SONY htib and later get a good receiver then use it sony speakers, if at all its possible.
->we dont have any other brands here, so what suggestion would you give to setup my HT? Should i buy online. HiMart is one place i saw these products, but what about warranty. Is it a reliable site?
->Any idea if Airtel HD setup box gives coaxial or digital audio output?
->If I purchase receiver and speakers separately, I saw recommendations of denon avr with BA 5.1, but BA has small speakers. are they good enough as compared to sony's floor standing speakers?

Thank you
Dev

Hi Dabasish, I may not reply to all of your queries, but I hope I can clear your doubts in some extent.

Every HT setup consists of several components : Source->Pre Amp(DAC)->Power Amp->Speakers

In a HTiB, all the components are assembled together so that all are less or more compatible with and made for each other, before using any of the components among them separately with other components, you need to think about their compatibility, power matching etc etc. So if any one of your Sony speaker get damaged, you will run behind Sony for same speakers, which may not be available separately. Same in case of amplifier.

But in other case, upgradation is very easy. You will be able to choose speakers (MA, Polk, Dali etc) and even subwoofers (e.g;Velodyne, SVS etc) of those brands which are specialised in manufacturing these.

Also, it's recommended to buy speakers of that brand, which manufactures only speakers.

If people near you dont know what a AVR is, that's not an issue, browse more, discuss more. You will get more knowledge about this.

Almost all HD setup box gives HDMI out which is very easy to connect with any AVR

The speakers, you are talking about are not floor standing speakers, they are just satellite speakers with stands. So you BA 5.1 is not bad.

For any further query, feel free to ask. By the way, I am from Cuttack :)

Thank you Pramod.
There are few remaining queries. If anyone has answers to them, please reply. thanks for the help

->Buying online without auditioning is not good, but as there are no place to do that i my city, what will be your suggestions? buy online without auditioning?

->the YTH-299 had active subwoofer, but the bass was not punchy. It was on a lower side. Infact the Sony showrooms subwoofer sounded much better than YAMAHA's

->we dont have any place to buy such things in Bhubaneswar, so what suggestion would you give to setup my HT? Should i buy online. HiMart is one place i saw these products, but what about warranty. Is it a reliable site?

->90% of time i will watch movies (Bluray discs or downloaded content). So please suggest me a good amp and all the speakers which can go with it.

Request forum members from your town to allow you to audition their system.

->the YTH-299 had active subwoofer, but the bass was not punchy. It was on a lower side. Infact the Sony showrooms subwoofer sounded much better than YAMAHA's
This is the reason people suggest you to audition, you know better about what type of sound pleases you.

AVRs offer lot of advantages over HT systems.

1) As Pramod said, HT systems are married to each other, so finding a replacement or part upgrades are near to impossible. However, in an AVR you can simply do this. For e.g if you want to replace your front speakers and center with better ones, it's as simple as that. You can buy any manufacturer's speakers and replace your AVR offerings.

2) Nothing matches the flexibility of a dedicated AVR when it comes to handling multiple sources. Like coupling a Bluray, STB, Xbox and some legacy AV systems.

3) Decoding / up scaling capabilities of dedicated AVRs are much better than those budget Bluray player's. I normally bit stream audio to my onkyo. Dolby decoding in my onkyo is much better than my Samsung Bluray player's.

Being said that, if you're not looking that much and just want to setup a basic AV experience with a Bluray and STB, there's no harm in going for an HT system.

On a side note, distorted audio at higher volumes can also be due to improper tuning and bad source.
