Singapore Hifi Show 2011 - Dec 2 - Dec 4

Thanks Dr Bass. I have always wanted to experience active speakers at home. Will look at the ATCs sometime next year.

How much for these 1.7s in SGD?

--G0bble

Maggie 1.7 is only about 3.5k SGD.

First time I was hearing a Maggie and I was really impressed. Per Abhi, the dealer for Magnepan here now has the 3.6 available for audition. Looking forward to it :ohyeah:

Master Tape + ATC SCM100 : This was an amazing experience not because the music played back was great but because I had no idea what to expect from a master tape. To me a master tape sounds like nothing !! It is neither warm nor cold, neither dry nor wet, neither bright nor dark, neither rolled off nor super extended, neither in your face nor laid back. I am adding so many "neithers" because it is not possible to explain objectively the sound of a master tape. I heard everything but nothing stood out. Everything was there in a proportion that I cannot or would not want to change. If I think objectively: Tone : wow what neutrality, not an iota of extra fat or warmth but neither a hint of dryness or sterility; Dynamics : Outstanding, the way the pianos struck, I have never heard before; Extension : No hi-rez material I have heard till date that has such outstanding treble range. The treble had bite but it will not bite the listener, the ambience and air was real, you just cant point a finger at it. The cymbals sounded hot and metallic but refined and with a proper body without any mud. I can go on and on but it is like a perfect world which has to be lived once. Now I understand what Vinyl lacks:ohyeah: and how much:sad:.
Nice explanation, I was unable to explain in words how it sounded. I agree it sounded just perfect, everything in its right proportion.

All ATCs sound very very similar.
I think so too. After hearing your ATCSCM40 in Bangalore, the ATC SCM100 in the showroom the other day, the ATC SCM100 in the show, they all sound tonally the same. Will conclude after I have heard the SCM40 with the NAIM tomorrow :).

Thanks Dr. Bass. Always wanted to know how master tapes sound. You and Santhosh are lucky guys. Please elaborate on what vinyl lacks compared to Master tapes.
I am not going to stop listening to vinyls. Just curious :)
Regards

Hi Hiten

I have heard quite a few master tapes of Hindi film soundtracks. Most vinyls seem to be a bit more mid focussed and lack extension. Also vinyls lack the dynamism of a master tape. Certain instruments like the piano, hi hat, cymbals do not sound very correct on vinyls like they do on a master tape. Its very difficult to explain but the inter note silences and the way an instrument and backing vocals comes in and goes is very real on a master tape.

Thanks prem for the explanation. Wow Hindi songs on master tapes. Any Kishore Kumar (my favorite) songs you have heard. I may be wrong but personally I think some Kishore Kumar song are badly recorded. For example, 'Guzar jaye din' from the movie 'Annadata'. So was wondering anything can be done about it.
Regards

Thank you for your detailed impressions. Did you find any good DACs in the same price bracket as AP DAC and better in performance?

Hi Sajith, the sources used here in the show were all very expensive stuff. If you want to buy a DAC only and not a CDP then look at the Naim DAC. I have heard the Naim CD players and they are very good. Very musical and non digital sounding.

Yes, I agree with Prem's description. Vinyls are relatively mid heavy. The sound of a Piano is a lot more accurate with master tapes. There is a uncolored agility, a feeling of limitless-ness of everything with master tapes compared to other mediums. The sound of real live instruments, doesnt matter which instrument just comes through.

No Hiten. Mostly post 90s stuff. In the old have only heard Awara. The Ghar Aaya Pardesi track is mind blowing.

I guess master tapes are not available for sale? Or is universe for audiophiles limited to tweaking vinyl, dacs, cdp etc.

On a more serious note, studio masters at 24 bit 96 kHz are available from people HDTracks. But I believe is HDTracks is USA only service for now. I am not sure if these are digitised from the analog master tapes, or from original digital recordings.

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
