Some questions regarding Cassette Players

I remember listening to a Pioneer Cassette Player at home when I was about 9-10 yrs old. It was a good silver coloured model that my uncle had brought from Singapore in 1988. Must have been around a feet in height and 2 feet in width.
I tend to think about it on many occasions.

What I was wanting to ask is what was the mechanism that converted the magnetic information on tapes to electrical signals.
I don't want lots of details, just a gist or whatever you know.

That would be the tape head. A square device about 8 mm high, across which the tape passed, pressed on to it by soft felt pad in the cassette
