South Indian Carnatic Classical Music

Was it Sreevalsan G Menon a disciple of Balamuralikrishna?

Don't know about Sreevalsan Menon, but Prince Rama Varma is
a disciple of Balamurali.

By the way I am just getting myself introduced to South Indian music. Had an amazing vinyl of M.S. Subbulakshmi (VIshnusahasranam). Will also check Prince Rama Varma suggested by quad.

The Vikku video was simply awesome! I have a gateway of India concert DVD of L Subramanium with Stefan Grapelli, so definitely these videos are being marketed.

Thanks for posting the video of Pt. Ramesh Narayanan. Think I will get some of his CDs along with a bunch of other Hindustani stuff next week. Listening to him has inspired me to build a Hindustani collection as well.

Regarding Anandamritakarshini, I have the same song sung by the Master himself so while initially I am very drawn to it , halfway through I realize the touch of the master is missing. Besides he sounds too much like his Guru without the same level of mastery. But it was still beautiful to listen to :)

On that note - what does it take for a good disciple to break away from his Masters mold and forge his own distinctive vocal identity? Perhaps Asit-ji can enlighten ..?

I just came to know this story about the Amritavarshini song through
one of my relatives.

"Mutthuswamy Dikshitar, one of the Trinity, composed it .
Dikshitar was en route to Ettayapuram to attend a wedding at his
brother's house. Moved by the hardship of the people due to drought,
Dikshitar beseeched Devi to bring rain and alleviate the condition.
He addressed the Devi as 'Anandamritakarshini, Amritavarshini'.
When he sang 'Salilam Varshaya Varshaya', meaning 'let the rain pour',
there was a downpour. There was such a torrential rain that the place
got flooded.
He had then to plead 'Sthambhaya Sthambhaya', meaning 'stop, stop'. "

I also found the story in this biography here -

Hi Hiten,

Pl check out MS Subbulakshmi's album "Live at Carnegie Hall", the song Rama Rama Gunaseema in raga Simmendramadhyamam , watchout for the aalap. :clapping:

The song is on side-2 of the 3 LP set of the album.
Very few singers today can give such a performance.

with regards,

N.Murali

I've decided to celebrate my 60th birthday, in 2012, with a concert.

No big do, or announcements, or anything: just giving myself to spend the evening listening to the artists of my choice, given that they are free and willing. Otherwise, it will be a normal Chennai "all are welcome" concert.

I'll talk to a friend who runs a sabbha, next week, see if their hall is free, and if some of the names I have in mind would accept a booking from this humble rasika...

Glad you liked it Gobble.

I think this is regular programme on DD malayalam channel. As the day before yesterday Pt. Sreevalsan & Pt. Narayanan were again performing some good composition.

Oh great idea!! :clapping: This could "deteriorate" into a Chennai HFV meet like below ;)

<Interrupting the Carnatic musician in the middle of an Aalapana with a violent shake of his knee> .. "Could you sing that passage again? We want to swap speakers and do an A/B" :ohyeah: :ohyeah::ohyeah:

Edit: And again and again and again ... ;) :D
