Hi,
Can anyone suggest best 5.1 setup under 40K INR? Considering AVR would be Yamaha 667 or Onkyo 608 and it will be 80:20 Movies:Music? Room size is 18feet x 13 feet x 12 feet.

In kolkata I am getting the following options
1. Bose Acoustimas 6 @ 37K
2. Jamo S406 @ 32K
3. Yamaha 8900 @ 34K (NSP8900 rear surround and center, NS8900 front towers and one sub)
4. Fluance AVHTB through ebay / shopyourworld @ 30K
 
bose isnt a bad speaker package but is over priced. you will get better quality spending the same amt on another brand

I checked that Bose is just marginally higher in price than Jamo or Yamaha package of similar power handling capability. However the non-Bose ones are coming with front towers as compared to all-mini cubes of bose
 
For your decent sized room, suggest not to buy the entire package right now.

Settle for the front FS as of now. Add the centre, surrounds and sw at a later date, as and when liquidity is re-established.

For fronts FS, look at:
-Wharf
-MA
-Q Acoustics
-Mission
-Dali (bit expensive)

Most of the above would be within 40 K. You shan't regret this decision at a later date.
 
^^plz follow what avidyarthy mentioned...i have done the same and couldn't be happier.Just get a pair of great floorstanders for now and later at a period of say 3-6 months down the lane, u can go for the center and surrounds(bookshelves/dipoles would do perfect in that case).

its best not to worry abt brands etc. listen to packages and buy based on what sounds good to you.

what are you going to be using the system for - mainly music or movies

2. Jamo S406 @ 32K ???

I bought Jamo S506 5.0 package + sub 250 for 56K couple of years back.

I love S506 which is much better speaker than S406 and I love its sound. If i compare my MA RS6, S506 is equally good. The power handling of S506 more than RS6. So if you are looking for a nice pair of floor standars, S506 is not a bad choice.

We are also getting the jamo s606 5.0 package in kolkata for 40.5K but seemed that the Onkyo 608 amp was falling short of power when trying to drive the 2 floor standers at 60 volume (max 97) which is 60% volume. The demo was taken at the Onkyo showroom here in kol.

I was talking about S506, not S606. I don't like the S606. S506 wil give you a good bass without those woofers.

Checkout S506 if you can.
 
How could you miss Sonodyne being in Kolkatta ? The Genie1 package is really good. Especially those little Genie wall mount speakers are sonically superb. It will be well within your budget and would kill all the speakers you have mentioned.

me and mandark tied up and auditioned even sonodyne genie 1 today with yamaha rx 307, for a discounted price of 40k with 26% discount offer ending tomorrow. We did not like it. The detail review will be posted by mandark tomorrow. The bass was horrible. Even profx fusion 6 was way better.
 
I decided to team up with haisaikat, since we had similar listening requirement and budget. On Saturday we decided to do some auditioning.

Audio Used - KK (Pay Ke Pal), Enya (May it be), Bon Jovi (Blaze of Glory), Soundtrack (Pirates of the carribean, Titanic), Robert Miles (Children), Jaybee (Shattered Dreams)

Video Used - Matrix (Morpheus' proposal + Down the rabbit hole, Lobby shooting spree + Dodge this)

Sonodyne - South City
Sonodyne - GENIE 1 HTS + Yamaha RXV367

We started with audio first in a stereo mode. The vocals were ok, but the bass appeared to be a suspect... by the time we completed playing some more songs especially the bass intensive stuff it was clear that the setup was not able to handle it... it was rather ear-jarring.

Then we tried the video... it made no difference sound was still bad... though the system was set in 5.1 mode we did not receive any audio response from the rear speakers.

Then we tried this with GENIE 3 HTS... still no good.

While the sales was explaining us a few technicalities another guy started played Kabhi Kabhi Aditi Zindagi (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na) on PQUBE and it sounded absolutely fabulous (compared to what we just heard). That made us wonder if the AVR+Speaker setup was properly set...


ProFX
ProFx Fusion 6 Package + Denon 1911

The vocals were good, speakers were handling bass way better that the Sonodyne setup. Sound was punchy... quite "in your face" sort of sound.

We continued playing the audio for 20 minutes and then switched to video,

The dialogues were clear and bullets were thundering. The down-firing subwoofer in ProFX Fusion 6 is quite potent.

However, I felt a bit of ear fatigue... possibly might be due to high speaker volume...

Polk TSI 300 + Denon 1911

We switched to Polk TSI 300 setup. The vocals were bit more clean, and bass appeared more tight and compact. Overall it was better than ProFx Fusion 6. And yes Denon + Polk combo is definitely bright.

Promises
Jamo 408 HCS (?) + Onkyo TX-SR608

Not quite impressed. It failed to deliver with the soundtracks. The bass had a "thud".

Jamo S 606 + Onkyo TX-SR608

This one was better. For video they played a demo DVD having clip from Transporter (the dvd player was not region free so could not play Matrix).

One thing that I noticed was that the speakers sort of "held" the sound rather than "throwing" it at you... And it was not as bright as Denon + Polk combo.

I have also auditioned some of Sonodyne and Polk combination:

1. Polk TSi 300 + TSi 100 in rear, CS 10 as center and PSW 110 as Sub with DENON 1611. (At pro Fx)

Movie: Pearl Harbour
Sounded good but the Polk Sub may not set properly. Sales guy also accepted that Bass was really boomy. After 10 mnts of watching movie was not great.
When "Hotel california" of Eagles played in stereo mode, I told them to made the SW off. After that it sounded really good. But clarity at low volume was not that good.

SONODYNE(In south city mall):
Sonus 2605 V2 FS + Sonus centre & rear + Roar 210 with YAMAHA 367

Song: "Hotel California" of Eagles
Sounded Really good. Mid range is v. good. Better with out the SUB. In review I read that Sonodyne Subs must be placed at a very suitable place in room which need to be found by try n error method in different spot.
Movie: Increadibles
Now sub acted good. But the problem was with the center and the rears. The dialogs were not clear at all. Previously also heard the same sonus combi and they played Gladiator. Then also I found the centre and rear problamatic. Voice clarty were not great and from rear only I can hear some sounds of swords.

So on 30th January I have bought the SONUS 2605 FS and Roar 210 Sub with 26% discount. Price: 19900/- + 12500/-
I have bought this Sub because of its low price. Otherwise I found Wharf MS10 and Def-tech Sub much better. But they comes with much higher price tag(twice or thrice the value of ROAR) and the quality is not that much better.

what is the price for ProFx Fusion 6 Package + Denon 1911???

They quoted me 60k for ProFx Fusion 6 Package + Denon 1611

also i found profx F6 bass very good, but it was very load and caused me headaches.

also they quoted 52 for 1611+RM6750

Profx said that fusion 6 will cost around 25K (discounted price over MRP of 40K) and Denon 1911 for 42K, totalling to 67K. I guess they may give a further 1K discount if bargained for the whole package although I am not sure.

We did not check the price of RM series though. However even I agree that Profx Fusion 6 had a good bass, at least better than the Sonodyne Genie 1 and 3 series that we demoed earlier. I would recommend you to audition the Yamaha 667 / 467 with NS8900 series (without the sub a 5.0 speaker set will cost 26K) which is in the same range as your profx speakers. I am still in process of making up my mind though.
