Speaker Auditioning Experiences - Kolkata

Indeed i would love to see a network capable amp from ca... devices should be network capable.. then we have lot of possibilities.. i can clearly see an andriod or ios app to talk to the amp then ... but the 650 A seems to be very competent.. will try to audition it this weekened... what is strange is the power rating is 75wpc which is the same as the denon.. then why is it more capable to drive the avianos ...

Actually CA is the parent company of Mordaunt Short and I heard that they made this AZUR series for best coupling with the Avianos and vice versa. If you even listen to the due you will come to know how best they bring out the output from Avianos. Btw I am also thinking of buying 650A and connect it to a Network Capable Music Streamer having onboard display and a good built in DAc or look for some Network capable DAC or Network capable CD Player. Even 651A is also not network capable and I do not want to give up CA AZUR option for Avianos somehow.

@Saikat a very valid reasoning .. but onkyo tx8050 has a higher power rating and is dlna compatible and is the same price... so i am kind of stumped.. will ask the richer sounds guy to hook up onkyo and the ca to a pair of ms aviano 6s and then decide..

Hi All,
I am new to the journey.
Thanks all for your suggestions and inputs.
I too have been to some of the demo offered in kolkata.
1.Sonodyne @ 26% discount from 20th jan till 29th jan '12 (S.City and Mani Square)
Experience :-Movie:- Thumping,Loud,Shaking. In short NOISE !!
Asked the Sales Person to lower the Bass, felling was so so, on
Genie 1 , sounds better in Genie 2 with Roar and Denon 1312.
Audio clarity was missing
Music :- Disappointment for Genie 1, to some extent good for Genie 2

2. Bose @ No Discounts (S.City) only on 3.2.1 Series 79K
Experience :-Movie:- Wanted (english), with 2 speakers and 1 woofer, the sound was unmatching
Hat's off to the technology that with 2 speakers you get a surroung sound.
Felt brilliant.
Music :- Santoor and Jazz , both played nice and was soothing to the ears, with clear
defination as if you are in a concert and music is playing live.

Hi SUBHA,If you are to judge stereo audio, then don't demo HT setups. Both are different cups of tea.Don't judge SONODYNE sound by listening to their listening rooms at malls. Those salesmen should join our forum for prelim training to start with.
If you visit their service centre where their demo was done earlier, you would have known what difference sound can be with knowledgeable people.
I have opted for Sonodyne speakers, after their ugly demo and also after listening to many firangi brands.
Within your budget, go for Yamaha AS 500 amp with SONODYNE Sonus 2605v2 FLS.With the 26% discount till 29th,at Sonodyne it fits easily in your budget.
Audition this, with other combo's,as suggested by others. If any combo beats this let me know.If you can increase your budget go for Marantz PM 7004 amp. That would be wonderful.

Kaushik,
If I club sonodyne with any other amp then can I get 5.1 under 20K? I am on lookout of a low budget but good 5.1 setup for my in laws to be installed in a 10x12 bedroom.

@hisaikat .. connected the ca 651amp to ms aviano 6 .. took a demo last saturday.. fails to impress.. couldnt tell the dekta between avr sound and amp .. was it because of the volume i wonder.. is the value of a stereo amp only realized at high volumes..

Did you get a chance to pair the same avianos with CA650A? Since my earlier listening impression of the CA 650A was very good amd moreover the I have read that 651 is more or less 650 with the USB addition. Regarding volume, sorry I have no idea.

This Sunday we (me, mandark, subhadeepgayen) finally made the purchase of Denon 1911 for 40K each from profx and speaker we had already ordered Aviano 6 (me and mandark),Avinao 2 (subhadeep), Aviano 5 and 1 (All 3 of us). The total speaker package of 5.0 came down to 69K for me and mandark (with Aviano 6 as fronts) and 50K for subhadeep (with Aviano 2 as fronts).

We took delivery of one set of 5.0 speaker set from SKS and took it to profx (they were co-operative in allowing us to pair and listen 3rd party speakers). Earlier we had listed to them using Yamaha RX-V667 in SKS and now we heard them using Denon 1911 in profx. The Denon sounded better but we must say that tuning plays an important role and we believe that Yamaha could have given a better output if tuned properly.

On the question of power matching I would say that Denon was able to drive the Avianos in 5.1 mode properly in some high bassy scenes at a volume level of -12dB. For 2 channel music the Denons did quite well and at profx they tested it with sound raised to -4dB when it sounded quite loud to us.

However I must say one thing which re-iterated what Asit da had expressed earlier. The 2 channel music sounded much when the same speakers were coupled in SKS with Cambridge Audio 650A which is a dedicated 2 channel amp. Also some significat amount of bass and overall effect reproduction difference was noticable in 5.1 mode w.r.t Yamaha 667 in SKS when playing Dare Devil using Cambride Audio 650R amp which is a 7.1 receiver with 1400Watts power consumption. But both of them are very high blow to our pockets 650A ~ 60K and 650R ~ 80K. We could not test the same track with Denon since they were not available in profx, auditioned with Avatar BD.

All of us did agree to one fact though that tuning plays a major role in the setup and affects the final delivery of the show so we have to learn first how best to tune our amps to get the best out of them.

My thanks to all for so many important views and suggestions which helped us justify several things before buying which we did not know earlier.

My thanks to mandark (and his broher) and subhadeep for all the support on this sunday in loading and unloading all those heavy speaker boxes several times at different places.

I will post pics a little later once profx does the setup (amp yet to be delivered) and all is in place. Profx will be charging me ~ 800 for installation (cash on site) since I did not take the whole package from them and I was not willing to set up all by myself.

Also the chord cables for fronts are yet to be delivered.

HI....

Nice to read thru ur journey... Can you tell me what is your experience now ,with the Avianos + Denon1911? I am planning for the same combination..

thanks and have a nice day...

Hi,

I am a total newbie for this field of sound engineering and audio equipment and configuration. But recently I decided to start setting up my own Home theater system because.. I just couldnt bare to listen to the plasma tv speakers during any good movie or listening to songs.

After weighing my options I went online and selected a Yamaha RX-A571 which a friend will be getting from US. Now my concern is for the speakers, Didn't go to many demos ...went to just two but I now realize that Bose is not up to the mark as the small speakers definitively leave something to be desired for and my budget for two front floor standing speakers now is (I feel is the best choice to make for a HT within the Living room measuring 30x15 approx) around 30k. I could stretch a bit more depending upon the speakers and the design.

As of now I am leaning towards JBL BK 190bk. Which would set me back about 32k. I would really like your assistance in this matter and appreciate any feedback ?
Cheers.

PS. was the 571 wise decision please tell me of other choices in the same price margin if need be.

Although I have not heard the 190, but it seems that its power requirements to drive it well should be hight. JBL's recommended max power is 200 watts per channel. Can you please check the per channel dynamic output of A571 (also is it V571)? I think the 571 will be a bit underpowered. RX-871 should be ideal I think or at least RX-V671

Re: Speaker Auditioning Experiences - Kolkata (URGENT)

Hi Friends,

Gained a lot of knowledge reading through the posts.

I am a newbie in this world of AV. I am setting up a lounge room (12x18 ft) for my new apartment. Have been researching for the same in the last few weeks. My requirements are :

1) A HD projector
2) Good speaker system
3) Av reciever
4) Player + motorised screen

With whatever visits i have done so far (Promises/Bose/SKS/Sonodyne and spoke to profx) I have zeroed in on...

Jamo A 320 Speakers
Onkyo TX-NR 515 reciever
Mitsuibishi HC4000 projector with a 6 ft wide motorised screen

Have a few questions in mind. Pls do respond at the earliest as I need to confrim this purchase within a few days.

1) Heard BOSE reciever (video quality) is not grt and hence dint go for it. Looked at thier T20 package of 157000. Also very expensive. However still open.
2) Could have taken just the BOSE speakers (brand+showoff+size) but i believe the quality of others like Jamo, Mirage, Elac is better. Also later there could be service issues as all other products are non-bose. It is so ?
3) Jamo was the cheapest offered to me and it seemed ok to my ears. Also I believe its a specialist in this area. Am I right ?
4) The Onkyo reciever is a 2012 product and features look grt, even though I dont understand the use of many.
5) The Mitsubishi projector demo was wonderful. Super clarity. Felt like INOX.

Promises is where I have zeroed in. However there pricing is very high. But I thought it made sense to buy all from one place than split up everything from a set-up and servicing angle.

Jamo speakers+Onkyo rec was quoted at 90000
Mitsubishi proj - Rs 1 Lac
Screen - 30000
Misc - 25000 (includes set-up cost)

PLEASE ADVISE IF I AM ON THE CORRECT PATH. Dont want to be taken for a ride. Sure a lot of ppl in this forum know abt AV inside out.

Thanks...
Gaurav

1st of all all the prices u have quoted are extremely inflated... The hc4000 should be in the 85k range... A 6ft wide should be in the 10k range... 30k will get u a 9-10ft screen... Also u said its a lounge room... Can I go ahead and assume making it full dark will be a prob for u??? If so than hc4000 might be the wrong projector for the job... You have to look at brighter living room projectors ... Or even better extend ur projector budget to 1.4-1.5 lacs and buy the Epson tw8100 & you will be most happy... This is the latest high end 3d projector which has amazing picture quality , brightness & price... It is something that is well worth extending ur budget... You should be able to also buy a 9-10ft grandview liberty screen for 25-30k for a true theatre exp... One comment about ur speakers intrigued me was that u thought they were just fine... When u are spending close to 1 lac the exp should not be just fine but amazing & unbelievable ... Especially for someone who is coming from a Philips htib ... My guess is u haven't found the best set in ur budget... Audition more systems before u decide... Buying from 1 place might seem convenient but it does not necessarily give u the best bang for ur buck... One option is buying a pioneer 51fs 5.1 speaker set + Yamaha v673 avr from avenue sound mumbai for around the same budget as u have had before (90k)... This is a system that is sure u give u the wow factor ... Setting up a home theatre is a job that requires a lot of patience & buying ur dream system does not happen by buying all the products from 1 shop... Just my personal exp...

Gaurav,
What is the viewing / hearing distance from source? 12 or 18 feet? If later then satellites will not be a good option for you, better try Floorstanders or BS or even monitors. But 12 feet can be managed with satellites provided the sub is also good enough. Your receiver is absolutely fine for satellites but should be evaluated again if you go for FS.

Another idea is for 18 feet distance (in case) you might think of 7.1 setup to carry the sound properly to the end.

Regarding your other questions
1) and 2) Your perception of Bose is correct, expensive and not VFM. And if you intend to go for mix and match service of issues in integration / matching may be a problem as they might throw all disclaimers, happended for me when I went to buy and if written already in this thread earlier.
3) There are more specialist than Jamo, if you are on budget due to the high costing projector, better buy Projector first and then after some time go for HT Audio part. But there are also very good brands in SKS, Profx.. Request you to specify what all setups you heard in these and what was your specified budget.
4) You will understand in due course of time but for now it is a good choice that you can take at face value.

Hi,

Thanks rajadeep and saikat for the prompt response.

I rechecked the exact measurement of the lounge room (attached to the living area) is 12.9 X 18.2 (around 220 sq ft). The viewing distance from sofa to wall/screen should be around 15 ft. The vendors advised me to go for a 5.1set-up for rooms with size of 250 and below.

Reply to Rajadeep's pts

1) Yes I know the rates are inflated and that why I decided to check through this forum. But pls understand I am from Kolkata and the dealer options here are limited. They quote almost like take it or leave it, particularly promises. The same products on US amazon are 20-30-40% cheaper but no option.

2) I plan to have black out curtains on two larger windows in the lounge room. I think this should suffice. Also the pj will be mainly used during late evening/night. Loved the Mitsubishi demo and dont want to stretch my budget further. Also dont want to go 3D.

3) I dont have option of a 9-10 ft wide screen as the wall is not sufficient. I guess 7th ft wide is what I can manage at best. I am told the pj screen is glass coated or something and hence little pricey.

4) Totally agree with the speaker pt. But the problem is they all seem good to my ears. Not able to figure out the minor details. I was actually happy with Jamo for its price and quality.

5) Indeed if the price diff. is huge I wont buy from single place. And I found promises in Kolkata to be a little arrogant.

Haisaikat pts

1) As I said earlier the viewing distance should be around 15 ft.
2) I took demo of BOSE/Jamo/Elac/Mirage/Sony. Just that Jamo was a little cheaper and was marketed to me by the dealer.

TODAYS Development

1) This forum helped me reach Digital Acousitics and I am happy I did it. They seemed more accomoditing to talk to. Had the products I was looking for and hence got a competing quote to the one recieved from promises.

A) They Had Mit HC4000 PJ - Should get between 90-100K
B) For high quality screen they quoted around 25K
C) For Reciever they advised Denon (1312 or 1713). They were initial dealers of Onkyo but faced service issues.
D) For speakers (keeping my budget in mind) they recommended Tannoy (TFX 5.1) and there very own brand Invisible. Tannoy sounded great. Have to say better than Jamo or even Bose.
E) Saw AVATAR through PJ and it looked great. Sound too.

I am going for detailed demo on 26th. The above mentioned package should be done within 200K-225K as per the sales guy. I am a little more convinced here. Pricing better/more accomodating/they have 20 yrs exp. in this line and have done common areas of major malls in kolkata as per sales guy.
Pls advise If I am on the right track

Thanks
Gaurav

You are on right track. I believe you are inckined to buy allfrom one place for sevice, but really that does not matter except for Bose.

Do mention your budget for speaker and avr so that all can think of options if any.

Promises is not what I would call an ethical dealer. You should be careful of getting your stuff from there.

I suggest you also visit Profx and audition denon with polk and kef. I find Polk is not that good for music but pretty good for HT

Yes Promises instruments in Kolkata is not that welcoming. I had been to promises, the owner gave me cold welcome and when I asked him about Onkyo Htib, he just called the sales person and passed me over to him as if I'm being a bother to him.

I agree to the feedback about promises, same reason why some of my friends did not buy from there as the price was not competitive, but there are satisfied customers of promises as well. However profx and sks are both very welcoming. Also digital accoustic was not that welcoming at my time but gaurav got a different reception, so it all varies from time to time. Has anybody visited Harmonie Audio in new alipur?
