Speaker Auditioning Experiences - Kolkata

Hi Friends,

Follow up to my earlier message.

I am done with the research on the AV products for my new apartment.

I have taken demo of Jamo/Mirage/Tannoy/Elec/Invisible/Kef 2005/Polk.

Earlier I had shorlisted Tannoy but now after hearing Polk I am biased towards them. Within Polk, I had two options. One, TL1600 or a package of TSi200 with DSW 550 sub woofer and two others. I have to say that this package sounded the best (crisp and clean) to what I have heard and the pricing is not over the top.

I had earlier shortlisted :
1) Denon 1713 reciever
2) Mitsuibishi HC4000 projector
3) Maybe a panasonic blu ray player

This entire package is within my budget of 2.25 L. Have I made the right choice. Request members to respond and help me take the right decision. Is there anything else I need to keep in mind.

Thanks...
Gaurav

Rupum : The tannoy speakers are around 38000.

Hi gshah26,
Have you auditioned Polk TL1600? Can you please share your views on it? I've still not decided my speaker package. Kolkata is not a good market for Hifi enthusiasts.

Rupam, Kolkata has lot of Hifi enthusiast but the problem is that number of dealers is limited and also it is very difficult to get a price bargain since very few brands will be found at multiple dealers. I asked the same to some dealers as why they limit themselves to a few brands and they say that the sale is not of that volume to encourage them to diverge on multiple brands which involves spending on several demo pieces. Rather they decide to concentrate on a fewer brands and sell them.

I think profx are the best sellers in Kolkata in terms of volume.

What does the package with the Tsi 200 cost?

Guys, i am also looking for entry level HT system in kolkata, but was very disappointed in the professional approach of people over here except Profx. However, the price they are quoting don't have any daddy/mummy. I have finalized Denon 1612 + Monitor Audio BR-2, but yet to receive the shipment. Any better suggestions ?

Have checked JAMO, Polk, Energy etc.. Tsi 300 i liked a lot, but sound was not that WOWful. Jamo is decent, i din like Energy classic. Yet to audition MA & Wharfdale.

Rupam: TL 1600 is not that good.. you will get better options at that price. Generally Profx is offering just 10% discount on MRP & that's just peanuts. Also, their Kolkata quotes are very high compared to Bangalore office. I can give you better rate than profx from authorized dealers, but installation cannot be done.

I own a Yamaha RX V371 and Sonodyne 1501 BS. I like how they sound and plan to add a center channel to complete the movie experience. Having said that I want a dedicated stereo setup. At this point I can not spend on both new speakers and an integrated amplifier, so I thought I would get an amplifier and use the same speakers with both the AVR and amp. Budget for the amp is upward of 20k but preferably should remain as far below as 30k as possible. I decided to go auditioning this weekend and today was the first day.

I made to Promises this evening and found the shop empty. My budget being meager I also wanted to check for an Onkyo amp and see how it sounded to me. The Onkyo was paired with PSB floorstanders, I did not get the definite model. The sound was nice, but thats all it was nice. The person at the shop, named Sukanta asked me my musical taste and hearing that I listen to classic rock, blues and Indian classical immediately declared that Onkyo was not for me! I was a little surprised and found it amusing. According to him Onkyo was for people who listen to hip-hop, trance, R&B, and for musical taste such as mine I should look for NAD. There was a NAD amp connected to a Denon CD changer. I am forgetting the exact model but it was one of the higher models in the line of 326BEE. It had 80WPC according to Sukanta and was paired with Jamo 606, one Elac Floorstander and PSB Image.
My Sonodyne, Yamaha combo is a little bright, I have to tweak with tone control to keep myself from being fatigued with prolonged hours of music listening. Even then the sound is crisp and I like it, but believe me the NAD and Jamo combo got me hooked. And I literally mean hooked. The top end was sparkling somewhat, and I could tell Jamo's are bright, but the NAD... OMG what a capable and commanding way of driving these floorstanders. At one point of time I closed my eyes and I could feel Howlin Wolf getting a hold of my senses right in front of me. It was as if I could feel the performance happening right in front of me! Soundstage, instrument separation was beyond anything I had experienced till date. The thump of the drums were pure, the guitar was pleading to me just as Howlin Wolf was pleading to his girl not to leave him. The only downside of Jamo was it was sparkling at the top end.
The Elac's compared to the 606s were more laid back, as if a little conservative, afraid of going out and flexing a muscle perhaps. Even then I could make out the finesse and strength of NAD dictating terms. I might be hooked to the amp, but it is beyond my budget by a country mile. Quoted 63K without any amount of bargaining. Of course this is not for me and so I was offered a 316BEE within 30K with 40WPC. From my experience with the Yamaha AVR and Sonodyne I find that I have to turn the volume on the higher side to make these really sing. I do not want to be hindered in the power front and so am not sure how 40 Watts will serve me in future if I move to floorstanders in a couple of years. But boy did I love the NAD !

Shibashis, power ratings are not really standardised and due to various factors (read this thread ) they are not the right parameters for a unilateral decision. NADS usually are conservative in their rating and have more power reserves for dynamic power than is stated.
I am fairly confident the 40W nad will drive your speakers more easily and at a higher volume than the AVR. it should drive most speakers at even double the price range

if they will not give you a home demo, it is worth it to take you current AVR to the shop and do an A/B with the Nad on any speaker.. you will know how they work relatively to decide.

Tomorrow I look to try Yamaha AS500, that could be within my grasp. Lets see how I like this one.
I also went to Japonica, it is more of an office than a shop. They had a Paradigm Esprit with Teac stereo receiver. They played a couple of John Denver songs, but after the NAD this was drab and lifeless. I did not think neither the speaker nor the amp could be worthy of a mention really.

Thanks arj. What you say leans me a little more to the NAD. As I said I will audition the Yamaha tomorrow, will try CA and Marantz as well. Your opinions and advises are greatly appreciated.

Hi...

Was going through all the posts and indeed found it very informative. Well i just brought a 5.1 HT (which is my 1st eva Hi-End Audio purchase)

I visited Watteffects , in southern avenue, kolkata. Was surprised to see the set up there. a state of art Listening Room , with almost all the wharfedales , quad , psb , Cambridge etc on demo. i got the Diamond 10.7 with Centre and Big DFS with SW-150 amp - Yamaha A-830. Got a very good service ( i took the Demo at 4ish... and my system was installed the very same day by 10pm , thanks to the owner who could understand my eagerness ..lol...)

Would recommend it to any of the City people... do google them.. the press has writen quite much about them...

congrats and thanks for the info about this new audio shop. What was the price you paid? You may provide some more details of the location or contact for others to refer in future. I did not know anyone apart from SKS who kept cambridge audio, so I guess now it will be good for competition. Also I heard recently that srikanth ex-profx kolkata has setup a audio shop of his own in ballygunj phari.

Btw, what is the rest of your setup like TV / Source / cables, etc

EDIT: I saw that you have also mentioned the same thing on another thread http://www.hifivision.com/authorised-dealers/45456-focal-back-kolkata-3.html#post615051.
It s good if you have been satisfied with the services of a particular dealer but probably to stop moderators from thinking that you have any affiliation with the dealer it is best to explicitly call that out. Nevertheless which other showrooms did you visit prior to this and what other setup did you audition?

Well its technically not a walk-in shop. I paid 2.00 Lac for the system lump-sum. with 1 year warranty on all parts....They are new with Cambridge Audio and also confirmed that their name will be up on the website shortly. Contact Person : Utsav Bhiwaniwala 9830031070 . yes , i guess there is a new store in ballygunj as well.

Currently i have hooked up my system with a 48" Samsung Led TV in my hall... but as per their suggestion and the kind of space i have.. i may opt for the Panasonic AR-100 or Epson-6100 ... (Saw the projector AR-100 at watteffects, seemed quite nice ).

Speaker cables from Bandridge got it from Promises 3 months back. Blu ray player Yamaha 477.

Please also suggest which projector i should opt for out of the two ?

Thanks...

Congrats, indeed a good combination, I think you tried to mention BDP Yamaha BD-S477. 2 lakhs is indeed a very good budget may be if you can mention the individual prices of the components that will be great for us to know and in case you bargained that will also be helpful for others to know?

Which bandridge cable did you buy, at least do you recall the AWG? For fronts and center with AVR I think at least 14 AWG should be used and for rears 16 AWG is just fine.

Do you own a lot of BDs? Or your main collection is downloaded contents?

I am no expert in projectors, but there are other whom you should post in separate projector threads may be for your projector suggestion.

But that is a gorgeous setup indeed, enjoy the hifi :)

Looks like a vintage amp with what I could get on internet delivering 60Wpc at 8 ohms. I think if you want to look for FS then stay limited to 2 way ones. Also not knowing what your budget the only entry level FS then comes to my mind are those of Wharfedales 10.3 or Sonodynes. But if you are open for bookshelves then there will be lot of options in 30K budget, but you have to carry your amp with you for audition that is for sure.

Had Good experience at Watteffects, Harmonie Audio & decent at Sollfege.

ProFx was a bit of a letdown, SKS was decent, Digital Acoustics ok.
