I was able to buy a pair of Altec 409s from an FM and tried them out on my low power Tube amp for a few months now. I was tempted as these have about 97 db SPL and suit low power tubes nicely. Since these Altecs seem to be popular with the Japanese Audiophiles I wanted to play with an enclosures designed in a similar manner for the fun of trying them out. The outcome of my trials is shown in the enclosed photo - box out of packing pine ply for testing them out. They do sound wonderful but need the help of sub for the low end. Presently they have about a cubic foot of volume and not much damping inside.

Now after trying them for a few months I am toying with the idea of housing them into something more serious. Perhaps a Pensil design (for the Alpair 12) which also suit these 8 inch speakers. Currently I have also integrated the supertweeters with the Altecs and I feel these would be essential also in the final verison.

Any suggestions or ideas ? They will eventually be used with my 3 Watt SET amp.
