Hi Guys,

I am new to this place. Needed some help.

I have a 30 year old Akai Bush Music system which i took over from my dad. It has provided excellent service over the years and i have no thoughts of parting with it. The Equalizer, Cassette player and Amp are in perfect running condition. I play Cds through an old Sony cd player, which itself is 24 years old. But the Speakers have shown their age after soo long.

The original Speakers are 3 way with 2" tweeter, 3" midrange and a 8" woofer. In one Speaker the woofer had blown sometime back and my dad had replaced it with some local woofer.

Now I think i have two Options infront of me:

1. Buy a new pair of Bookshelf Speaker/ floorstanding speakers.
2. replace all the drivers in the Original speakers.

I would love to go with the second option, jus to retain the original speakers and the look..coz i think the look of the speakers matches the music system.

So guys would really like some help and feedback. Budget is around 10-12k.
attaching some pics of the system.Sorry for the pics quality. Taken with a phone.

You can change the drivers, but have to make sure the drivers you are purchasing should have same diameter so that it fit properly. Sometimes it varies from the back, you may need some adjustments.

If you are going to option 1, then please mention the Amplifier specs (watts etc) or model number to understand the requirement of new speaker pair.

@brendanbarrett:
You are lucky that you get could use such a robust and nice system from 30 years ago and preserved it. A friend of mine has a equally old Technics and it plays audio cassettes (few best quality made) better than newer cd players.

as far as i know the amp gives out 45 watts rms/channel.

four speakers can be connected to the amp in speaker A and speakers B configuration.

I would like to retain the old original speaker cabinets and change all the drivers in both the speakers.

will i need to change the crossovers too??

which drivers would you recommend? the stock drivers are 2" tweeter, 3" midrange and 8" woofer.

again the budget stays the same 10-12k.

Thank you @viper08.... i too play some very old cassettes which i have to agree with you sound better than many new cds.

I would change the speaker with a Wharfedale or so. Driver technology has come a long way. Those cone tweeters are absolute now. Dome tweeters are much refined and produces much higher frequencies with ease.

You can also look for some used staff which will give better value for money as your budget is 10-12K.

Go for a driver change, but choose your drivers carefully. The changes have to be replicated for both channels. Also keep in mind impedance, power rating and the type of cross over used. You may have to tweak or change the cross over depending on the drivers you choose to use.

Bush Akai systems were re-badged Akai equipment. They were big in their day and cost quite a bit too.

I have a Akai speakers - SW177 and wanting to give them away. Let me know if it interests anybody.

For excellent sound that won't break the bank, the 5 Star Award Winning Wharfedale Diamond 12.1 Bookshelf Speakers is the one to consider!
