People:

I have given an advance for a Harmon/Kardon AVR 133. The price was 13K and it was the last unit they had.

My theory - with my budget of less than 30K, any 5.1 AVR will suffice, what matters are the speakers.

Now, I need your suggestions to buy two good bookshelf sized speakers (towers will too big for my apartment) for a budget of less than 15K.

I will be making the purchase in Mumbai, so kindly suggest any stores.

I will buy Center, Subwoofer and rear speakers later on.

Thank you.

Try settle for satellites instead of BS.

HK 133 is not all that powerful, yet a very good AVR. So, satellites should be a right match. Make sure the satellites have a nominal impedance of 8 ohms ... again due to the limited current generating capability of this AVR.

Thanks Reynold and avidyarthi.

Last question...I am yet to buy the item and only gave an advance. Should I go for some other AVR rather than the HK 133?

At this price of 13 K ....... you shan't find anything else.

The AVR is just fine, only less power. Thats something one hardly makes use of, on a practical side. If the right speakers are selected, then, no issues at all.

Make a little extra effort to carry the AVR for speaker auditions, and you can't go wrong.

Thank you avidyarthi. You are right, for the price of 13K you cant get anything else.

Let me look around for speakers.

U can get a complete set of AVR 133 with JBL SCS 140 in Mumbai for around 22k or less (MRP for the combo is 24,990). This should be the ideal setup since u r sticking to this AVR. Else the same AVR with SCS 200.5 should come for around 27-28k. Also consider the JBL cinema 300 speakers (MRP 20k).

All the above sets I've mentioned are sub-sat combos. I'm planning to get the cinema 300 speakers for myself, if u r interested I'll get u the dealer quote.

I'm having AVR 133 with JBL SCS 200.5 bass is very good but treble is poor

I use JBL SCS 200.5 with HK AVR 133.. It works pretty good with sub sats.. Bass is really good as mentioned previously.. Am happy with the whole set up as such.. I personally feel that these JBLs go well with HK's.. If possible try out HK 134 which has got HDMI also..

Thanks for all your replies. Very informative and very valid.

If I am paying 23-24K I can get an ONKYO 3400 HTIB with satellites and a passive subwoofer.

Will an ONKYO 3400 be better than the Harman Kardon AVR and the JBL's you are mentioning?

JBL is famous for speakers. But entry level stuff will be more or less same compared to ONKYO and the ONKYO receiver will be more modern than Harman/Kardon 133.

If i am going to suggest u HK AVR which is outdated then i thnk tats not fair and i guess nobody would do that unless or otherwise HK AVR is a great whch works out wonders..

U r right u can go for Onkyo for tat cost but I feel the sound in HK plus JBL is better than Onkyo ..I like more bass.. My feel anyways.. The only drawback i see is passive which leaves u very little room for upgrading...

Wat i can suggest is get a pair of good Front left and rights with HK AVR and later buy the center and then surrounds and then last u can replace the AVR with a new one..

Cheers
Nag

If you have the budget then you may consider ALL the below together:

Fronts: 1 pair JBL Control 1: @ 7.5 k MRP
Rear surrounds: 1 pair JBL Control 1: @ 7.5 K MRP
Centre: 1 no. JBL Control Now: @ 10 k MRP

(::: JBL :::)

Total = 24.5 k (MRP). With say 10% off = 22 k. You can procure a 'smashing' sub (Velodyne / SVS / HSU) later on ....... depending upon your .... :ohyeah:

I have not received user manual for AVR133. May be my audio settings are wrong. What setup in AVR you are using ?

I have got the user manual.. Wht do u mean exactly by saying what set up?

I'm getting muffled sound from the speakers like treble is set to minimum. I don't whether i have to change setting in AVR or i have to buy Towers to get some treble.

How much is power rating for AVR133.
