Suggest budget stereo setup

Isn't Marantz SR-301 a 5.1 Channel A/V receiver ?? Will it be good in stereo?? Or u plan to use a 5.1 system ?

It is an AVR... a little compromise on the stereo... plan to upgrade to a 5.1 as we go along...

CA amp was at 34 K... way beyond my current budget

Hey,

Seems you already made your first purchase.Congratulations on that.

Please let us know the prices of all you know, will really be helpful to me.

Marantz SR-301 has a sub-out ? Have you decided on speakers?

Neetant,

Check out the specs. of Azur 540A; it says the power output is 60 W into 8 ohms and 90 watts into 4 ohms. So if your speaker impedance is 4 ohms, you can get 90W max power from Azur 540A. What is your speaker impedance? 8 ohms is commonly available.

Muthusami. S

My speakers impedance is 6 ohms (Wharfedale diamond 9.2)

Ok.

I just saw polk audio monitor 40.Mordaunt short Avant 902i,Wharfedale diamond 9.2 and Monitor audio Bronze R BR2.

polk audio monitor 40 : Nominal Impedance - 8 ohms,Recommended Amplifier Power : 20 - 125 w/channel,Efficiency - 89 dB

Mordaunt short Avant 902i : Power rating :15-100watts,Nominal impedance : 4-8?,Sensitivity : 89db

Wharfedale diamond 9.2 : Power rating :20-100watts,Nominal impedance : 6?,Sensitivity : 86db

Monitor audio Bronze R BR2 : Power rating :100watts,Nominal impedance : 6?,Sensitivity : 90db

If I choose the CA 340A SE as my amp with specs :

45 watts (into 8 ohms)/55 watts (into 4 ohms)
Signal to Noise Ratio: 92dB (unweighted)

Which of these speaker will match the best with it in order of priority.

neetant :

Thanks a ton! That article is very informative.

Libran :

Can you please post a snaps of Marantz SR301 (front + rear ) please.

All audiophiles :

Actually Libran's choice of amp has put me into some thinking.I once thought of an AV receiver not because of the 5.1 sound,I love stereo and never plan to use 5.1 but one thing is I have a DVD player & DTH tata sky,so every time I need to switch between them I need to unplug them from the back of my tv and connect the other. An AV receiver can solve this, right?I can switch between the different video sources by using the remote right?

But but but will an AV receiver compromise on sound quality?

It will... there is no doubt about that...
But, then the audiophile v the family man( to take of kids movie rquirements + not using up too much of living space)... we know what takes over.

I haven't opened up the pack as yet. Will send some urls which display a 360 degree view of the receiver

Cheers

I evaluated the following

1. Onkyo 3105 / 5105 ... 19900 and 27K ... A HT 5.1 .... not keen on a 5.1 and after reading some reports on how manufacturers take us for a ride... convinced that I should go for a standalone amp

2. Yamaha AX 497 - Stereo Amp @ 18K
3. Yamaha RXV 363 @ 17K
4. Yamaha RXV 361 @ 15K ( 363 is upgrade from 361)
5. Denon / CA / NAD are outstanding but way off my budget

Speakers

1. Looked at MS Genie and MS Avant 902i... The audio expert felt that SR301 may not be able to power the MS 902
2. Bose ... they do not even have models on display...and reviews are not too good

Also looked at Nucleus (Anthony Gallo), CA and Dali ...way too expensive for me

Shortlisted Wharfedale 9.1 / 9.2 (12200/- and 15800/-) ..negotiating further
Also re-visiting Jamo A 320 / A340 / A 500

Only issue is Wharfedale and Jamo (320/340) are 6 ohms...but general opinion is it should not matter

Will have one final look at Acoustic Energy... but they have only in-walls and not on-walls...I cannot get civil work done to fit the in-walls :(

The Audiophiles can come in with their comments... negative ones most appreciated :)

Thanks for the articel.

Thanks for all the info and the snap:)

I don't seem to find a sub-out in the pics ( all ports not visible because of all the wires already connected ) but surely you are the right person to verify :)
