stacking two subs on top of each other is pretty much a waste of money. There are no known benefits except 3 to 6dB higher volume which can be obtained with one powerful sub at lower cost.
2 subs corner loaded on opposite sides of the room is basically the idea. 2 subs are almost always better than one if setup right.

If you cant just get one sub. The higher end subs are definately overkill for your room. You dont need so much power. If you intend to move to a different room in future, in that case get the best that you can afford.

I don't plan on moving.
However, I'm confident with just one sub for now in this particular room. That being said, and in light of your second post, I am looking at the SVS PC-12 NSD and SVS SB 12-NSD. As you and others have pointed out, these are more than enough for my room and I don't need it but they do fit and (hopefully) provide enough headroom that it can
effortlessly fill the small space with minimal to no distortion, compression, etc...I'd be even better if the SVS PC-12 NSD or the SVS SB 12-NSD (or even similarly sized cheaper subs) can blend well without having to be driven hard or approach its limits if I crank it up.
Further, I had to be sure if a high-end sub like the PC12 Plus or dual SB12s were indeed overkill (for the current room) before shelling out $ but now I'm sure.
With these single subs in mind and my listening preferences, I want no reasonable chance of hearing the sub work hard to keep up with the rest of the system.
Which one is preferable?
I prefer 75% movies, 15% games, 10% music. I have a small sealed room.
what I gleaned so far...
SB12 - it is more musical, cleaner, sharper & tighter bass for small rooms. great for movies, ideal for music.
PC12 - more louder and deeper longer extensions and relatively boomier for large rooms (although I've heard they can do quite well in small rooms), ideal for movies, great for music.
I think I may go with the PC12, who knows I may move to a bigger room in the future...
What do you think?
If you already have the speakers, then why not try and see if they are good enough? It won't hinder.
Because you guys said they're too small.
I'm not audio expert or aficionado. I come from a Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro-80, O2 amp-Asus Xonard DX-15" Magnavox-HDTV-audio system setup, seeking advice on creating my first HT digital speaker system.
I'll try it first to perceive if they're good enough with the sub in question.
About the meter, EMM-6 is fine. The spectrum labs give more accuracy, but you won't need it. At this moment, I think you have lots to learn and room modes, measurement is a big topic. Keep reading, don't rush. At the moment, you will be able to use the mic only for level matching.
If you want to do room treatments blindly, then just do corner traps. With measurements, you will be able to find room modes and do more targeted treatments. But its a very long way to go as far reading and understanding.
So I can use the Audyssey mic for level matching and then use the EMM-6 (without the spectrum labs) to get measurements to effectively do room treatments??
