All,

I have the following setup

1) Onkyo HTS3400
2) Samsung 40 LED
3) Sony Blu Ray Player
4) Tata Sky + (HD+PVR)
5) Broadband Router

I have connected them in the following pattern

1) Onkyo to TV through HDMI
2) Blu Ray to Onkyo through HDMI
3) Tata Sky to Onkyo through HDMI
4) Router to Tata Sky + (For VOD)
5) Router to TV (For Apps)
6) Router to Blu Ray (For Browser)

I have the following clarifications
1) To achieve Dolby Digital 5.1 from my tata sky is the above setup fine?
2) What should be the settings on the AVR Direct, Theatre Dimensional, Full Stereo or Neo 6 Cinema?
3) What must be the Signal Quality of the Tata Sky + to recieve good clarity sound and Picture
4) What is the latest firmware on the Tata Sky +

Thanks in Advance for your help

Badri

for DD 5.1 sound you would also need a coaxial cable or optical cable which ever is there in TS, connect from TS to AVR, then do some setting in AVR to get audio from digital cable rather than hdmi

set the dsp to neo 6, it does a good simulation of 5.1 sound from 2 channel source, but try others as well and set the one which you like

5.1 audio is supported also on HDMI but is dependent on the service provider. You need to confirm if Tata Sky has support for 5.1 over HDMI. If not, then you need to run an optical/coax cable from the STB to the onkyo AVR.

Once any content with 5.1 is detected by the AVR, it will switch to 5.1 by default. Other ambient settings is your personal preference. For only music I like to use stereo, for movies and tv shows I prefer neo 6.

Thanks Akash and Saj for the responses. I have searched on the forum and i do know that Airtel doesn't support 5.1 over HDMI but haven't seen anyone complaining about the same with Tata Sky. I will do the digging again.

Aakash, One question on "Once any content with 5.1 is detected by the AVR, it will switch to 5.1 by default", how can i verify this?

once DD 5.1 signal is detected ur AVR will light up Dolby sign thats how u can verify the signal is DD

and afaik even tata sky doesn't support 5.1 over hdmi , u can verify this by checking the avr if it lights up dolby when you change the channel to HD then it is supporting 5.1 over hdmi else no, then use the coax or optical cable to connect and change the setting in avr to get 5.1 from it

Tata sky needs to upgrade their firmware if they do not support 5.1 over HDMI. Until that happens, there is no other alternative but to go with optical/coax for 5.1 audio. Run the optical/coax cable from the STB to the AVR. I'm not sure of the Tata Sky software, but please also have a look at the settings. You might need to enable 5.1 in the setup, if required.

Once any 5.1 signal is detected, the AVR should show 5.1 on the display panel, could be dolby digital or DTS depending on the source. As Saj also suggested, if there is a 5.1 light, that should also light up.
