It doesn't. Mine got activated almost instantly after installation without any SMS/calls. So for some time I was watching HD channels on 29" crt!
If yours is not done, you can give them a call and ask them to activate immmediately.

In my case, the Installation guy has to call his centre for activation for which they charged me Rs 300 as recharge coupon cost. Post this the SD channels started immediately whereas as communicated to my the installation guy the HD channels got activated after 12 hours..... guess different experiences for everyone...
Went with the Diwali offer, installation happened within 2 hours of ordering via customer helpline, installation itself took 2 hours, after that was able to watch HD in its full glory on a 42" LED.. Costed me 3999 (got tata sky hd plus) .. nothing extra .. neither did I beg anybody
Its active for all the TS+ customers (both SD and HD).
Got TS HD+ today. HD is pretty awesome. Retained old TS as 2nd connection.
It records programs while on standby so I've kept it recording some nice Discovery HD programs at night.
To above qn, showcase VoD has some Charlie Chaplin short movies that one can watch anytime.

Quality of HD channels from Tata Sky is good. The number of HD channels is quite low though and I do think they are a bit over priced. Even I was thinking that in a year or so the number of HD channels would increase and the costs would be acceptable but 'they' do not seem to be moving in that direction as of now.

Tata sky HD 5.1 sound
Hi..I know this must one of the most boring questions in this forum and on the net. But there is no definitive answer and hence have to post this query.
I know when Tata SKy HD was launched, people couldnt get 5.1 thru HDMI and they had to use a RCA cable or Optical audio.
However I have seen recent posts where people mention about a firm ware update in September wherein you do get 5.1 audio thru HDMI now.
The reason I ask is two folds:
(1) I called up tata sky recently to confirm abt the firmware update and at least the guy Spoke to had no idea abt 5.1 audio and HDMI and all that. I called again and even the second guy was clueless...so I thought asking them about getting 5.1 audio over HDMI wasnt working.
(2) SO I paid 500 bucks to get a Belkin Optical audio over ebay. However even after connecting it to my AVR, the display on the AVR remains Dolby Movie which is what I get for all the other channels. When I plug my BD player the display changes from Dolby Movie to Dolby Digital which I guess confirms that I am getting HD/5.1 audio. May be this also means that my AVR by default takes both audio and video over HDMI and does not consider my optical for audio. I believe this means that I need to look at my manual to figure out a way to tell my AVR to only take video over HDMI and take audio over optical.
Hence please confirm if there has been a firmware update and whether we are getting 5.1 over HDMI. IF the answer is yes pls help me understand why the display on my AVR does not change when I tune in to HD channels like it does when I play BDs.

When I choose auto surround..after 5 secs it displays STEREO which it normally does when I play audio
But what abt the basic question of whether any recent updates gets tata sky to output 5.1 over hdmi?

I would request people who are familiar with Pioneer AVR to help me direct the AVR to take only video from HDMI and audio from the optical cable. Thx

Thanks Amol. I tried to change the settings and selected HDMI and Dolby digital + I pressed the blue button. However when I go out and come in again it defaults to SPDIF. I thought this was because I had optical out cable from the set top box..so I removed the cable...did the whole thing again but again for some reason it defaults to SPDIF. Does this mean my set up is not updated with the latest firmware?
The default to SPDIF is only a confusing UI design by tata sky.
What the UI allows is selecting DD/PCM for SPDIF and HDMI both.
If you select HDMi you should be able to see what you had last saved (PCM / DD).
It's somewhere in the input settings. I have a 919 at home, and haven't messed with the settings once I set them up initially. As far as I can remember, you have to set up the HDMI input to which you have connected the STB to. For eg. if you have the STB connected to HDMI 2 input, then go to input settings (I think it's one of the options on the Home Menu), then go to the HDMI 2 input, then if you go down, there's an option for selecting the Audio IN. You have to change that to OPTICAL instead of HDMI.
This is as much as I remember from early 2010 when I set it up. I might be wrong, but I think that's how you make the AVR use video from HDMI and audio from Optical.

I see SPDIF and Dolby Digital. When I change it to HDMI, the blue button icon doesnt appear. So along with HDMI I change DD to PCM then the blue button appears. So say I press the blue button go back and come in again and this time I select DD and press the blue button..I go back and come again...HDMI is replaced by SPDIF and this is what I was referring to...irrespective of my selecting HDMI..it always defaults to SPDIF. Thanks Zervin..before I started this post I did try that but after few seconds it would show stereo on my AVR. But after I saw your post I again did it just to be sure and now it shows DD Digital. So I guess spending 500 bucks on the Toslink wasnt a waste of money after all.
I do have another question...see I keep telling the AVR I have small speakers since I want all bass to go to the SW. But when I switch off and switch on again..it goes back to Large....any idea how to tell the AVR not to switch to Large by default even after I made changes to the settings..Thx
If settings are already saved and you do not change them then the blue button will not appear. Only if you change any of the settings it appears.
About SPDIF/HDMI = I am repeating again - the UI allows for settings for both SPDIF AND HDMI. It is NOT either SPDIF or HDMI is selected for audio output. The fact that SPDIF is selected by default is a bad UI design inconsistent with other menus. Probably there should have been different menus for SPDIF and HDMI.
It happens in mine too and that does not mean that it does not output audio from HDMI.
