TATA Sky HD Plus

I am already subscribed to the Annual Mega Pack. Will the HD Gold pack be automatically available?

Which is the better choice TataSky HD or TataSky + HD?
A DVR for an additional Rs. 1499 seems like good value.

Thanks

if you have annual mega pack - you need not pay extra for HD.
Go for TS+ HD, it is good value - you'll not get even a decent hard drive
for 1499

If you take annual mega/lite pack, then you get all HD services for free, service visits are free, and you will be considered a premium customer (maybe after some time - i have annual pack for 4th year now)

HD+ is so much better because you can pause or record and review live telecast and record missed telecasts. There was a 500Rs cashback offer on payment through IVR/Card/Online - move fast if you want it - heard it may be cancelled soon (may already have)

Yes I get it and another member has also confirmed 5.1 over HDMI. Search this thread itself for configuration.

its gr8 if u guys get 5.1 DD with HDMI alone...do you have a AVR hooked to it using HDMI only ? can you see the dolby sign when u r on HD channel with HDMI only and no optical/coaxial connected to STB and AVR

yes, yes, yes.

For all practical reasons I do not prefer connecting set topbox HDMI to AVR. There are instance where you dont need it.
For watching news, serials and kids watching Chotta-Bheem, I dont prefer to keep AVR ON only because video pass through AVR.

If it is connected with digital cable, based on the choice of program or time we could switch between TV audio or AVR.

Newer AVRs have HDMI pass through in standby. So you can still listen to programs on TV speakers with your AVR in standby mode.

Surprisingly.. The HDMI Passthrough was earlier working for my setup ( TS HD+ and Denon 1610) with the AVR in standby mode. But lately it was not .. so got a Belkin Coaxial to connect TS to AVR and connected TS to LCD directly.

Depending on the program I chose whether to use the AVR or not..

I've current setup using hdmi like this

TATA sky -> TV
TV (ARC) -> AVR

but using this setup, I can see only stereo on AVR.

Using this setup, is it possible to get 5.1 sound using hdmi

I am assuming that you have TataSky HD.

Q. Does your AVR has HDMI?

A. Yes, AVR has HDMI-In/out (passthru or upscaling).
Then switch as follows:
TataSky HD ==> HDMI ==> AVR ==> HDMI ==> TV
Since Tatasky outputs 5.1 sound over HDMI, you will get the surround sound in your system.

A. No, AVR does not have HDMI but has Optical/Coaxial in.
Then switch as follows:
TataSky HD ==> HDMI (any port) ==> TV
TataSKy HD ==> Coaxial or Optical ==> AVR

But note that I am not too impressed with the 5.1 sound from TataSky. In some channels it is plain simulated and they introduce DRC and other such methods which really kills the joy.

My AVR has HDMI-in/out, not sure passthrough or upscalling. I've denon 1713.
Setup you're recommending needs to switch on AVR or at lease in standby mode. I want avoid this dependency as my family members will make noise if they're not able to watch TV :)

I thought I had same issue but I googled and read in several other forums that ARC outputs stereo from other HDMI inputs on TV (probably for copyright protection - dont remember now).
If you use built-in media player of TV then ARC would output 5.1 (at least and I have tested this).

What AVR do you have? Test whether it passes HDMI signal in stand-by mode. I am pretty sure that it does. Why can't AVR be on stand-by mode all the time the TV is on?

If AVR does not pass HDMI in stand-by mode or you cannot have AVR in stand-by mode, then your option is as follows:

TataSky HD ==> HDMI (any port) ==> TV
TataSKy HD ==> Coaxial or Optical ==> AVR

Thanks, just4kix,I'm using Denon 1713. Yesterday I checked, stand-by option is working. Let me check which is convenient for me. Stand-by mode or use optical cable for audio.

Hi I am new to this forum and I have a question. Please provide the optical cable plug snaps using for tata sky as I have a doubt I am using mini plug to mini plug whereas tata sky set top box is compatiable for toslink. Because I am getting good sound in HD Channels but getting very low/no voice in SD Channels. Tatasky people told that to use toslink audio cable.

This is which I am presently using

This is what tatasky is compatiable (I am thinking)

As I am living in a small city it is not easy for me to go and purchase in shop but I have to book through online thats why I am asking your views.

If any one using tata sky plus hd box please tell me which one of the above two is the correct cable for tatasky

@krishdwi ,

Second photo is not visible. Though I think the first photo u provided is the right one.

Can u elaborate us how u r using this optical cable on the other end? where does it go? to your amplifier /AVR or to a logitech kind of system? in either case, what is the setting u have enabled for listening to the 2 channel SD sound?

As far as I know, there are only two only possible reasons for SD channels low volume :

1) The original volume of tatasky is set very low. Note that unlike Optical signal, SD channels audio is not a digital signal so the sound does not travel as is. It goes to the amplifier/speakers at a level which is set originally in the tatasky box. In this case, one has to increase the amplifier volume way more to get to desired level. Hence please check the master volume setting in tatasky and set it to the maximum so that the volume required to increase in amplifier is minimal. basically mix and match the optical signal's volume dial numbers by manually tweaking the Box's SD channels volume to match it.

2) The amplifier/speaker system is applying some pro logic / pro logic II to upmix the 2 channel audio to all 5 channels. Most of the times i have noticed that though this setting/function makes sound reach all speakers, it unfortunately reduces the overall volume. Disable such a setting to hear 2 channel as 2 channel only. If at all u necessarily want to hear from all speakers, use the 'multi channel stereo' option which keeps the volume level same and merely duplicates the signal to other speakers which in turn increases the overall volume as well.

Hope that helps.

Now I have tweaked the settings though I am getting sound in HD and SD channels and when I contacted tata sky service centre they advised to use toslink for hd plus stb which I thought as in second picture. I just want to confirm whether first picture is the perfect set which is mini plug or second one with long plug (my home theatre is perfect for mini plug only but I doubt for tata sky plus hd.

Experiencing weird problems with both my HD STB for the past 3 days- does not switch on immediately and after a couple of tries it reboots. Also reports errors like " Error 08" your Digi card may have been inserted wrongly-please remove wipe and replace " etc etcA couple of wrong recording have also been made and no option to delete.
Anyone else ?
