This is Joe Roberts at his best:

"By the late 80s, I was out of grad school and virtually unemployable with a couple anthro degrees, so I got a job in a high end store. There I got to play with much of the gear under review and I could judge the reviewing on that basis, in addition to critiquing their evaluation systems on intellectual grounds.

"My general impression was that these guys were nuts. They were totally lost in their own language and losing track of the scheme. The cleverness of the review seemed to overtake the job of evaluating the gear. Tediously described micro analyses of a single violin note on some dreadful Editor's Choice Shaded Dog stretched on for paragraphs of wine and Leica references. In the end, one had little idea of what the device under test actually sounded like and I found it very difficult to recognize the review in the actual equipment.

"Although many of these 80s writers were intelligent and capable folks, some went down the rabbit hole of language and metaphor and got lost in the tunnels.

"I have done some reviewing and I think it is a difficult enterprise, especially if avoiding intensive navel-gazing and creating a useful, meaningful piece with general readability, entertainment value, and larger relevance are the goals. Many of the "top" reviewers have been formulaic as hell, almost to the point where one could cut and paste in new equipment names and fax it in the to the editor for the next issue. Reviewing machines."

6Loons is the best example of these verbose and garrulous "reviews". They ramble on and on and on and in the end one does not remember what is under review.

Although, I must confess to reading their prose often to "brush up" my English! :D

@6Loons: LOL:) - certainly the master of florid, verbose and opaque prose.
And a fringe selection of album choices bordering on the esoteric.

I love the metaphors employed by Art Dudley of Stereophile. Sample this: "Watching television is like watching a sewage-disposal truck driven by a talking mule crash into a burning whorehouse"

I would have thought that Viren's orginal content was aimed at the mainstream audio press. Surprised to see that the focus has been placed on 6moons instead. I would say that Srajan has been an actual counter to the mainstream.

Srajan and his colleagues (Wojciech Pacula, Marja & Henk, Paul Candy, etc) are genuine high end audio enthusiasts who are open to non mainstream and new up & coming audio brands. If you are looking for genuine information on new audio technology 6 moons is a good place to look. The research undertaken is very refreshing in comparison to the cookie cutter style of mainstream audio.

Rethm is an example of a brand that has benefited from 6moons reviews.

I dont know what Virenji mean to highlight with his opening post.

Please clarify...

Such paragraphs are many on the internet - will a cut and paste onto HFV generate a pillow fight and sore egos each time ?

Virenji - please be original and contribute something written by you with your vast knowledge of hardware and the market.

We expect more from you than a cut paste job.

regards

No pillow fight and no sore ego's here. Just opinions. Neither of us has our dog involved for us to fight or to be sore.

Definitely no fights.
I believe Virenji liked something and shared it with us. Many FMs have done this before from articles and reviews. It would have been cut and paste if he had posted it as his own.

Ah, yes! My views are fairly well known. If not, they can be read at the Lyrita Audio website. Its just that when an audio veteran reiterates views that knock the establishment, views that I have formed over the years, it just feels good!

Those views should be heard, especially by the younger crowd. Everything is not all right with the establishment - they have pushed down ill informed opinions for too long on an unsuspecting public.

Those quoted views should prompt you to find out more about the man Joe Roberts. Just as Gordon Holt shook up the reviewing world earlier, Joe Roberts was one of a few that brought the basics back to music reproduction. Check out "Sound Practices" magazine.

Too much of current reviewing is about equipment only, and how it conforms to a specific language. Music gets lost in the way. A classic tale of missing the woods for the trees!

Thank you Virenji - i wish you had added your above post to the opening post of yours.

IMO - reviewing is not totally an art but a science as well. Its the science that shines torch of good sense while the art allows for some degree of romance.

Unfortunately the posts that followed de-generated into rubbishing reviewers or 6moons - which was not the intention in the first place for you i presume.

Here are a nice few lines from Mr Srajan of 6moons -

" But audio is about highly individuated pleasures. Taking sides only serves those who agree. It's sufficient to describe core tendencies. Then one trusts the intelligence of one's audience to know what's best for them ..."

thank you and regards
