I am looking for a simple (read:Cheap---------- better read: Economical --------- best read: Affordable !) laptop or Net book. Budget as always is on shoe string ! Rs 20,000 max.

My need: Basic computing, MS office and Internet + Music nothing else so 1 or 2 GB RAM and even a 80 GB HDD will do.

I do lot of travelling now-a-days, so ruggedness, 5-6 hours battery span, Light weight, compact size (screen size around 12 inches but 1o inch screen will do) is a MUST. CD/DVD reader / writer not required. (but suggest any external CD/DVD Write) , should have basic ports and connectivity options, that's all.

Requirement Immediate .

Any recommendations?

Once again sorry for asking such a dumb question that too without searching the forum for similar questions asked in the past, really sorry for that.

Me too having similar requirements.....

Thanks all for the help.

I just got a Samsung N210 Net-book.
Great Design! Very pleasing aesthetics. It adds a class and stands out from the zillion net-books in the market. Specs: 2 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, Win 7 Starter, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SD card Reader, 3 USB 2.0 ports, One LAN port. 10" screen is totally non reflective, great when used outdoors, Keyboard needs a special mention here as it is made up of chicklet keys, each key is separate and overall arrangement is quite spacious and almost close to standard full size keyboard.
Purchase price: Rs 19700, free stuff: 4 GB Kingston USB Pen drive (That itself costs around Rs 400)!
So far I am extremely happy with the purchase. Battery life (after first couple of charge-discharge cycles) is 11 hours (for normal operation- Internet browsing, editing documents using MS office trial pack, no wireless, no Bluetooth, screen intensity to 50%) !
Very compact, light weight, I can pack along with my other thing while travelling, no need to carry a separate Laptop bag and above all it does the job effortlessly.
Other brands considered: (specifications finalized as Win 7 Starter, 2 GB, min 250 GB HDD, 10" screen, min 6 Hours battery backup, weight less than 1.5 Kg)
1> SONY M126 : Rs 22400 (after negotiation) : Dropped this one on account of poor battery performance (4 hours or less) and Price. However this one has 320 GB HDD
2> Toshiba: Great product, very sturdy and robust, but pricey Rs 18000 for 1 GB RAM, battery compartment protrudes an inch from the body contour , look odd, handling makes awkward. Dealer was not enthusiastic, he was pushing bigger laptops
3> HP: Another great machine, but pricey. Rs 2000 more than Sammy 210.
4> DELL: bulky, for same features price is high, no ready stocks, dealer lukewarm response.
5> HCL Mini: good alternative, but design is almost similar to Toshiba less the studyness.
6> Acer: Good average model, but no way near to SONY and Sammy .
7> Gateway: Pricey, otherwise great machine.

Hope this helps
