upgrading my speakers drivers

i hope someone here would guide me in regards changing my speakers drivers in my tower box.
i have two tower speakers with two 8" woofers and one 6.5" mid and two 1" tweeters per box. i would like to know if its possible to change the drivers with more powerful ones plus a 3-way crossover as am not satisfied with the original speakers.. i want to use the tower boxes as i don't intend to change them cause they're of higher quality which i brought with me from Germany.
any help in this regards would be appreciated !

It is not about buying high quality drivers and crossovers and screw them over the cabinets. Matching is the key here. Just swapping with a "better" quality drivers will not give you better sound. In all possibilities it will sound worst than the original.

You didn't mention why you don't like the sound. What are the other components in the chain? What is make and model of these speakers? It may very well be the room or the amp or the source is being the culprit(s).

well i don't know the speakers brand cause I've looked all over the net with no success !
maybe cause it was brought from Germany or custom made i don't know
but the speakers are only 80watts each and 4 ohm also and not the best for my av receiver .. i took all the drivers out and tested the ohm .. everything in the cabinet is 8ohm
two woofers 8ohm each
mid is 8 ohm and the tweeters also 8ohm but the crossover what concern me cause its of cheap quality.. for me the sound is very nice and powerful and the frequency is good too 40hz-20khz but the bass is very very strong.. i tried to lower it using my Yamaha -rx-a3030 to -6 but its still very strong..all other components speakers are from the same brand.. rear speakers are 80watt each and center also .. if i could find a way to lower the bass and make them 8 ohm then it would be perfect.
i want speakers to match with my receiver but i don't want to lose the cabinets cause they are of top quality and great looking also.
if i cant buy a new 3-way crossover with new speakers why there is a lot of new crossover for sale out there,, i mean cant i buy lets say Eminence PXB3:3K5 3-Way Speaker Crossover Board 500/3,500 Hz and buy a matching speakers to match the cross pint of the crossover,,will it be that bad? if yes what are the specs i have to look for in the new speakers ?

The speakers are rear ported with 2 X 8" woofer, bass ought to heavy but I don't it can't be controlled. There are many possibilities for these but some I can think of are -
1. Have you placed the speaker too close to the wall?
2. Do you get equal bass response on all the 4 corners of the room? I am doubting standing waves.
3. Do you have/wish to add any acoustic panels in the room? This will make the frequencies response flat.


Speaking of crossover, it will be very difficult to choose proper drivers keeping the crossover points constant. That is why other way option is taken. But it is not impossible though.

Now the main problem is the cabinet volume. Every driver(s) needs different internal cabinet volume to shine. It depends on many factors including Equivalent Volume (Vas), Free Air Resonance (Fs), Q factors etc.

Try to get the internal volume of the cabinet and let's see if we can back calculate to some decent bass drivers.

But before that, I would like you to change the speaker position across the room and see how is it sounding.

Stuff one or borh of the ports with a rolled up sock and see if you like them better.

the speakers are not too close to the wall , 20cm from the wall, i tried to move them far but with the same result.

i get bass response from all four corners but front speakers have stronger bass when i use all channels stereo mode .. rear speakers equipped with one 8" woofer and tweeter @80watts

i don't know if i did it right but to measure the internal cabinet volume i Multiplied the width by the length by the height . the result were 6600 cubic inches then i Divided the volume by 1,728 to convert to cubic feet.. result was 3.819 FT or 108.155 LITERS , is this the right way for internal volume ?
