I have been using a well built USB cable from my music pc to dac since the time I am using USB to connect a PC to dac
Its a cable I got with my HP printer
Its relatively thick and I always felt with USb any cable changes would have very least effect and hence never even bothered to try any other USB cables made for audio purpose
Also the fact that with respect to using to PC as source and USB as preferred connection between PC and DAC I was pretty sorted out with SQ specially after having a dedicated laptop as source which has Daphile as the OS, music stored in another server and an UPTONE usb regenerator
With all these changes vs using a normal windows pc (windows not optimized) and no USB relocker the noise floor had gone down quiet a lot and overall sound was clean with good balance through out the frequency range
One fine day JLS001 tells me he is going to make a USB cable to be used between a PC and a DAC and since he does not have a USB dac would like to try it in my setup
I did not think much about it and one fine day he calls me and lets me know cable is made and he can come to try it in my setup
Immediately , I asked him a question that what changes one can expect by different USB cables
Neither him or me had an answer as we had never tried swapping USB cables
We decided to listen to my existing cable for about 45 mins and then switch to the new cable he has made
The cable he has made has got 2 runs of raw cable (one for the current and other for data). Its made by Gotham cables, not sure of the model number. Will tell JLS001 to post about the details of the raw cable
Initial impressions were that its little bit on the harsher sides and making the highs nosier then before. We decided to listen to 5 to 6 tracks before coming to any conclusion. To my surprise with every track being played we could make out the cable opening up and the harshness going
This was the first time I witnessed with any kind of cable (analogue or digital)
So the cable burn theory does have some truth, atleast this session proved so
After 6 to 7 tracks being played sound settled and it was a very free flowing sound , mids changing the most. Now the vocals had that presence where one would say that one can feel vocalists singing in front of us, better separation as well
Same for plucking of guitar and tone of the piano. All felt much more real. So tonality was what improved the most and the texture of bass. There is an improvement in soundstage width and depth but I would say a very minor difference
It indeed made the sound very much more musical then before and I was more then happy with that change
Data is in form 0s and 1s so I am not sure what did this cable do differently then the earlier cable , but for me the change is big enough to rubbish it as I was just hearing things
So all members who do have a USB dac please do experiment with different USB cables, not necessary to be an expensive one
@JLS001, if you don't mind can you please post further details about the build and the cable used
