Wana start Listenin to Vinyl!!

Well have been doin a lot of research on Turntables n stuff.. Now closing in one some prospective winners, rega rp1, denon dp 200. Now, I own a pma 510 ae with a phone pre amp. So which one should I opt in for??

And what are the worst things I can encounter being a Vinyl guy? I mean maintenance wise.. I really dont take care of my stuff and my room's all dusty and stuff. I've heard that dust can be a real headache when it comes to LPs.. So what are all those that i'll have to look out forr???

The worst thing IS dust!

you gotta change your habits a bit and ensure a dust free environment.

Plus, among the choices of table you've mentioned... the RP1 is a good deal. in fact, there is a group buy deal going on it that should make it a clincher for you!

Ohh thats like the toughest thing ever!! Gettin rid of dust!! i have seen these TTs being kept inside glass boxes, So that doesnt help??
And I watched a video on turntables and the guy kept askin not to go in for a Belt Driven turntable rather buy a direct driven one.. Can anyone advice on how that really matters??
i found out that all the entry level turn tables are belt driven only

jk - Sorry I missed your earlier post asking about the Denon. However, since that time, a close friend of mine (sandeepmohan on HFV) has purchased an RP1 and he swears by the quality and VFM that the table provides. The dealer is based in Pune (Lifestyle Audio) and the cost is 25K approx. I would recommend that over the Denon tables.

Like Malvai said, dust is your worst enemy. If you dont keep the equipment and records clean, you will not enjoy vinyl since all you will hear will be the dirt in the form of hiss, crackle and pop. Like listening to snakes and cornflakes :)

record player and turntable...interesting jargon...its like the astronaut and cosmonaut thing. a simple turntable with a built-in amp, which was generally portable, was called record player where as a record player used as a component in hi-fi rigs was generally referred to as turntable...

In order to sell old wine in a new bottle, it is essential to repackage and reinvent a product. To create a halo around it. We have been victims of advertising for so long now, that it is difficult to separate the substance from the hype. Perhaps vinyl and turntables are more hype than substance. Perhaps tube amps are more hype than substance. Perhaps a compact disc is the biggest hype of them all. Perhaps solid state amps are mass marketed hype and tubes the holy grail.

As 'individuals' all we can do is to NOT follow the herd! To think with our own minds, and to listen with our own ears.

I have been offered 12k for a Nad 202 turntable.. Can't find much info on it.. Can you guys help me on this?? Like how good is it etc.. I haven't negotiated on the rates either.. Just wana know your feedbacks before proceeding further

Thanks a lott malvai.. Will talk to him that way only, and try and get it for like 6k. What all are the things I'll have to look out for when I audition it? I mean anything wrf to the stylus or the cartridge??

Check following:
1. when playing a record (please make sure it is not a warped record that is playing), see that the platter rotates smoothly.
2. the platter must rotate without wobble, i.e., it should not have any discernible vertical movement.
3. turn the volume to zero while playing - there must be no unwanted sound from the turntable.
4. Turn up the volume - right and left channels must have similar loudness.
5. Check for proper setup - first and foremost, the counterweight must be set to match the weight recommended for the cartridges. Second, the antiskating setting should match the counterweight setting. Third, a well-balanced tonearm should have the tonearm parallel to the record surface when playing, or as recommended by some experts, it must be very slightly inclined towards the stylus end. There are quite a lot more settings needed (like azimuth) but they may or may not be supported by the TT or tonearm in question, and you may need specialised equipment.
6. Do you like the sound? Yes - good. No - try another record. Like it now? - Yes. Then good. Still No? - walk away.

Well now dilemmas increasing.. I started looking out for some used TTs, so my hi fi guy was like, if i spend about 6k for a used TT, i dont have any assurance on the life and/or quality of the cartridge and this will result me ending up spending double the amount for setting up the TT. And since I literally have no idea of the TT stuff, he says chances of me being deceived are very high.. So he's suggesting to get an entry level TT, the likes of PRO ject, maybe the genie or the debut 3 so its new condition and I get warranty too.. So shall I take the advice? i find it highly convincing..

One of ways I got into Vinyl was buying a TT that is easy to operate and maintain. For this Vintage Technics or similar quality (Denon, Yamaha, Dual) Direct Drive players are fantastic.

Hint: Read up on Direct Drive vs. belt driven tables.

Even 70s models that are maintained well will serve the purpose well.

Now more importantly you will also need a decent Phono stage or amplifier as the amplifications from the TT is very low to be directly pushed into your power amp.

Finally you will need a good cartridge. These usually go with particular brands or models of TTs. Audio Technica, Shure etc. are decent starters.

You can then get a taste of the sound.

Some points that helped me out.

Myths:

Vinyls always sound better than corresponding CD recordings. Not necessarily true unless your system can fathom subtle differences. Its different sound for sure though.

All used vinyl's can play well. This was a hard lesson as some of the records have lots of scratches in them.

You will have to clean a record each time you play them - not necessary unless your system is in very dusty environments which it should not be to start with.

You can clean vinyls with towels, damp cloth, ... There is a risk to doing this. A record cleaning machine would be a worthwhile component to have esp. if you are buying used records.

You will not upgrade once you have a decent Analogue setup. Not true at all. I have already pulled trigger on a system that is ~10 times my starter system as a first upgrade and that does not count records!

Finally got my first turntable today, damn excited about the whole thing, its a Pioneer PL 514 X belt driven turntable.. Thanks a lot for ur help here guys, its the start of a big journey for me from here :)

stevieboy and sachu, thanks a ton guys
I am like hooked to the system with just a couple of records, somehow i just dont wana stop the music, I played a single record over and over again, which was a black sabbath greatest hits one, songs that listened to so much and got through with.. The whole thing sounded new on a record!!

Thanks a ton DEV!! just loving music, the Vinyl way.. BTW check out amazon.com, they've got Metal March offers running on cds and vinyls..

Jk chaos,

Playing vinyl repeatedly just might damage the grooves. Vinyl tends to melt a little as the stylus passes through and takes some time to reform. Some believe in this some don't. just so you know :)
