Bought a new subwoofer cable from hifimart. Each end of the cable have a cylindrical shaped item fitted, its bit heavy too. Can someone enlighten me the purpose of this.

That's correct, sub woofer cables tend to be a bit long and that's why you'd find these ferrite cores on them. These were commonly used earlier with long microphone cables, especially in recording studios and public address systems. The intention is to keep out intereference. They can be found commonly in audio and video cabling in modern times. Even Sony supplies connecting cables (with USB out) for cameras with these ferrite cores.

A bit worried about the weight, as it may damage the connectors. Each one may weigh around 50g hanging from the woofer as well as from the AVR.

That is easily solved, all you need to do is arrange for some extra support. I've seen some boom stands (like mic stands) and custom stands in magazines but you can use more readily available options like a pile of books, stool or whatever works best.
