So, I already have a PlayOn mini and planning to buy another
media player for the other room.

One in the living room will be a wired connection and the other
one will be wireless.

I have a ASUS RT-N16 router which will act as a 24/7 downloader
as well as a NAS for both the media players.

I need help in deciding what should be my next media player.

Should I buy the PlayOn!HD (not mini) or WDTV Live or Xtreamer Side
Winder or ASUS O!Play or something in the same price range.

I initially thought of buying a Bluray player but decided to buy
later when Bluray rentals become widely available and affordable.
For now it is going to be the rips and hence only another media
player.

Given that the mini is RealTek based, would it make more sense
buying a Sigma based one like WDTV live?

On the other hand if I buy the same product again, I dont have
to deal with creating multiple jukebox (or similar) or thumbgens
etc, as there will be a single repository and one version of jukebox
created for one media player might not work with another.

Also like bansal98 said in the Xtreamer thread, I was browsing the
xtreamer forum and I see some very rude statements from the
moderators/staff and that makes me nervous thinking of the sidewinder
as my second player inspite of it being another realtek.

Also from my point of view, each player seem to have its own +ve and -ve
and make sense because for instance

PlayOn!HD
+ Having the mini already, dont have to deal with multiple
jukebox problems etc. ACRyan staff seem to be not rude
though they are sometime slow in responding in the mini
forums/threads.

- Another Realtek player

Xtreamer SW
+ newest of the lot

- rude staff/moderators - basically questionable support.
- another realtek
- have to create multiple versions of jukeboxes

WDTV Live
+ Sigma based
+ lots of 3rd party support
+ most widely used player

- have to create multiple versions of jukeboxes etc

similarly other players make their own point. Hope you get the jist.

I see lot of people in this forum having multiple mediaplayers so
they would know by experience if it would be a good idea to buy a
different player or not.

Anyways, I would like to hear opinions from everyone so that it would
help me and anyone else who will be in a similar position.

MoDS, if there is a similar thread like this one, please merge.
Thank you.

OK. 40 + views still no reply.

Looks like people want me to take my own decision, which is fine.

I would like some one to help me with the following question.
Is the DAC part of the chipset or is it a different component?.

I find listening to songs better when the PlayOn mini is used than
when my DVD player is used to listen to the same song. This means
something (the DAC) in the PlayOn is superior to the DAC in my
DVD player.

If the DAC is a different component and not part of the chipset, can
anyone let me know which among the following players have the best
DAC - PlayOn!HD, WDTV Live, Xtreamer SW.

This could also help me to zero-in on my next media player.

Thank you.

Good to see a very neat and crystal clear analysis....

it looks u have made of ur mind what to buy... and u just want few members to give a nod for your satisfaction... which is not bad at all...

if u ask me personally...
i will suggest you to take a look @ the new WDTV Live Plus.....

Xtreamer Pro is no doubt a good product but again let the FW+jukebox lunch first....

Very soon... many media players will come with Google TV..... so good days are ahead

@Avi: The only diff btw WD TV Live and WDTV Live + is streaming Netflix and other premium content. But its of no use since its restricted to US only.

Is there any other diff?

You are right Ram. Dont see any other significant benefit in "plus" unless i forgot to read some fine print during the comparison.

The other difference AFAIK between the Live and the plus is the display of DVD menu structure.

NetFlix streaming support is hardware dependent and so it cannot be implemented in WD Live. So they had released it as a new product since they had a lot of inquiries. The DVD menu support can be easily added thru a firmware update either from WD (i think not yet supported officially) or any other third party firmwares.

@Harry: Thats right
@Siva: That can be solved by firmware update
@Ajith: Thats what I was saying that there is no other diff.

@ all: But seeing WDTV Live and WDTV Live + both price is $149 it would make sense to go for live +

Guys,

Since I will be using a NAS as a central repository, I would like to understand how
WDTV live would access files from this NAS. For instance, I remember reading the
PlayON manual which said if I had to read files from a PC share in the network,
I will have to have the PC in a workgroup named WORKGROUP and have guest
user account (with no password??).

Right now I am having my 1 TB HD connected to the USB interface of ASUS RT-N16 router's which acts as a NAS and I am able to read files from my PlayON. I think
there was an option in the router settings to put the router in the same workgroup.
Anyways I would like to know if there would be any problem (to access files via wired or wireless) with this setup if I use WDTV live. Please let me know your thoughts on this.

Thank you.

Since the target audience for Live+ is limited, the firmware updates could be an issue. Also since it has a h/w difference and there is no price difference from Live, there could be a chance for compromising somewhere, just assuming.

Actually I am still confused on what to buy and not made up my mind yet.

Anyways, hardware wise what is the difference between Xtreamer Side
winder and the pro?. I am not interested in the storage facilities provided
by the pro. Also I see the pro is being advertised as NAS supported does
that mean the Side Winder does not support NAS?. In other words if I have
a hard disk in the SW, will I not be able to access it from another media
player (PlayOn mini) or the PC?.

Similarly what are the differences between PlayOn (original) vs the PlayOn mini?.
I know PlayOn has a 3.5" HD slot and coaxial input and card reader
slot, all of which I am not that interested.

I am little inclined towards the side winder because it is newest of the lot
(so hopefully extended support when compared to the others which are
atleast a year older) and the wifi adapter is supposed to work with my mini
as well. I dont have to then worry about using which player where in future.
