Hmm. Now am having second thoughts.
The reviewer at techtree.com praises pq of dish truhd channels. He says that bitrate of hd channels is good than airtel evident in a better colour gradation.
But he feels that channels like zee cinema hd are upscaled on dish.

Don't go by such reviews, many times they r not true. Also many sites also so surrogate advertising of many products, u know how false advertising is done to promote products in India. I have seen dis tru hd chs at my friend's place, it not as good.
Also i have used Videocon d2h, Tata Sky and Airtel.

Videocon d2h is best overall. Max SD and HD ch, lowest pricing plus they add new chs very fast and aftersales is really good. Nver seen a more customer focused DTH like Videocon. Yes, their EPG is little slow but they r working on a new software to improve it. In all other front they r great

Airtel is good interms of Audio and Video quality but still Audio Quality has gone down in last few months so as the video quality. The biggest drawback of airtel is that it is not cost effective and adds new chs after ages. Customer Aftersales is good.

Tata Sky is the horrible one, it overcharges for channels, givews least no. of chs and adds new chs after many months/years. Their main focus is to just earn max money, serving customer is not their motive. No matter how much u tell them, they will either ignore or give standard reply. Hardware/Software is good but that's useless without getting much chs/content

Just burnt my fingers with a costly shift to D2H and back to TS :o The family just could not tolerate the UI and the very user unfriendly recording facility. Also the bias against- or apathy for English programs is very apparent- the program guide is often not available for more than a couple of hours ahead - so even putting a flawed recording schedule is not possible.

Their remote also needs some serious improvements! The Play /pause button is a small button hidden away, while a language change is a single click big button right next to the number "9" ( same colour) which caused lots of consternation until the manual was pulled out and the location of the culprit identified!

The local head of quality and a team visited my home, as I understand it a new version of software correcting some of the problems I raised is due in April/May - he was frank enough to admit to some of the goof ups in their programing code.

As I mentioned elsewhere, IF recording future programs is not an issue - D2H is the way to go.

+1

I was always complaining about TS cost, but recently got d2h installed in my uncle s home, and i just can't live with the UI and the remote...

I need oly few HD channels (i basically record movies from star, hbo defined n hitz) and watch em part by part 30 min daily... Ability to set recording from phone or web is a big plus for me.. Also the UI is well designed... So i dont mind paying 100-150 more...

D2h is the most vfm, no doubt about that... But its advisable to try before buying!

Just my 2 cents, why are you so much worried about the UI. How much are you using the same. I won't comment on the recording part as there may be issues there. Frankly i watch only the HD channels on D2H . The UI does not bother me as i hardly use it. I have added 20 HD channels in my favorites and only watch those.Post selection i can use the channels up or down button to move around or use the no keys from 1 to 20 to pull up the channel i want to watch and pretty happy with the same.

I like the RF remote better as i don't need to point the remote at the box and it works anywhere in the room. I know the remote is not great, but i like the flexibility of switching channels without worrying where the remote is pointing.

First few days it was difficult being a TS user for 7 years but now i am used to it. For all those who are switching to DTH for just viewing HD channels. Don't worry about UI, add them in favorites and watch you would not face any issues. Also i am happy as i get more HD channels than TS ever gave me but at a lower cost.

Anytime you switch products or brands, it would take you time to get used to the UI, it can be for TV, Bluray players or STB's.

So give it a try and see how it goes . I hope they fix the recording glitches in coming months for folks who use the same. I get most of my stuff online or i watch the repeat shows, hence i don't record anything.

Videocon d2h is working on a software with faster User Interface plus they will soon launch app for I Pone, Android, VOD Facility and facility to watch TV on Mobile.

If u want to send the feedback to higher authority then send mails to [email protected], [email protected], they are the COO and CEO respectively. They will reply and surely consider ur requests. I always do the same.

Cheers!

Whoa !! Thats breaking news because cost apart, this now makes tatasky with maximum number of HD channels isnt it ? as of now its 15 HD channels + 3 specials =18. The new total will be 18+6= 24! thats more than D2H.

@ Dushie: I'm an impatient guy :-) i dont like the big lag between channels, and since my line of sight with the Stb is pretty straight and clear, RF is mostly useless for me...

If you think that RF or IR technology in remote makes any difference to time lag between switching of channels then you are mistaken. The input lag is due to the processing involved to verify whether the channel to which you are switching is as per your subscription package.

^ oh.... i ve never tried the d2h STB without RF so cant comment on that....

but lot of old videocon users have posted that they find the new RF remote laggy. Maybe it's a software issue then!

Between various DTH providers as also between various models of STBs, the input lag may vary. I have undergone a feeling that Tatasky STB input lag has increased of late - over the past one year or so. When I switch channel, I get the audio almost immediately but video display is seen after nearly 2-3 seconds.

Its good if they add these channels ,but if you think they will just add the channels without attaching any cost then you are mistaken. When compared to D2H you will still end up paying more in TS to get the regular HD channels, not getting into special HD channels like premier. The HD access fee kills the joy of watching the same. Also you need to have the base pack that has all these channels. Adding it up the cost would shoot above Rs 400 per month to watch all regular HD channels.

The day TS introduces HD package as an add on, things would change. Till then it's expensive.

Is there any circular, reliable news item that corroborates the story of addition of all these new HD channels?

Actually, I don't understand why Tatasky is being cursed for the HD access fee. All providers have separate rate for the equivalent SD and HD packages. For instance, D2H has platinum SD and platinum HD packages where the HD package cost is more of course. So how does this differ from Tatasky pricing? Or am I missing something?
