When TataSky is adding more HD channels

I faced same issue with TS and called them yesterday and logged complaint to activate star premiere HD at earliest. Haven't heard anything from them yet but will call them again and push them to activate it.
So unfortunate that we have to take such actions to force these companies do their job properly and ethically.

My mega pack is expiring on 1st October and I'm sure even if they refunded me for SWPremier, they won't add it to mega pack when I renew next time. So probably not worth wasting my time with the CC. Anyways, took a stock of what channels I actually watch and figured out I can get them all (including SWPremier & HD access fee) for well under ?400 (compared to appx ?540 I pay for mega pack even with a yearly subscription). So not upgrading to that anymore. This way atleast I won't be stuck with tata sky for a year if I decide to change the DTH provider.

It looks like even with mega pack they are asking to pay 60Rs per month and not budging for a free topup. The customer care says if you can give me a customer id that received a free top up I will quit my job. :D Can any one help ?

@Jbgude and @htfan17, please send us your TS id nos. You can do it by Pm if you dont want to put it on the forum. We can then give it as a ref to TS CC.
Thanks

I just spoke to the TS helpdesk and they are sticking to their super package concept and as a annual mega pack subscriber i will not get this channel for free and i need to pay 60 rs/month. I had a big argument stating that i was told whatever channels that would be added in future i will be getting them without additional payments and they are yielding to any pressure put across. We need to do something about this.

Yes thats the irritating part, off late I have noticed that whenever i call the CC the agent always starts with Hindi and i need to remind him that i have selected English.

That is because most of the CC activities are outsourced and while taking the contract they outbid the others by charging a lower fee. So to manage margin within lower fee, they pays low and at such low pay package, they can only get people who can only speak Hindi or hardly any english, as there are big demand for fluent speakers of english from the Overseas customers, who pays better. So now you know, why you get to speak Hinglish, even if you choose English.

Wel guys STAR World Premiere is a Premium channel so it can't be given in any pack. Other HD channels which will be added like TEN HD, Zee Cinema HD, Zee Studio HD etc. will be added in base packs along with hd access fee. U can't accept tata sky to give premium chs for free as for a ch like STAR World premiere the channel charges a bomb bcoz their cotent is premium. Same way u will get HBO hits and HBO defined only as a-la-carte as they r premium chs

From what I've heard, HBO hits and HBO defined are ad-free channels. And a lot of the movies have dual audio (English and Hindi). That justifies the high cost for me. SWPremier on the other hand wants both the premium pricing and wants to show ads. That is unacceptable to me.

And btw, since when is 6500 a year equated to "free"? That's one of, if not THE, costliest plans for dth subscription out there. And yet we have fewer (both sd and HD) channels. Add to that the fact that TATA sky promised they'll add any new channel, hd or sd, for free. So we're paying more than others and not even getting what we were promised. But still, tata sky isn't my real concern here. It's not their decision to put this channels in specials category. Its star's decision and that's where my biggest problem lies...

What exactly is premium about this channel? You get to see the shows anywhere between 1-10 days of its US release? It's still censored. It's still the same show which we'll see if we wait a month or two on other channels or their own star world HD. Sure we never had a channel which telecasted only new shows but we definitely had and still have shows which get telecasted in India within a week if not days. Add to that the fact that in total you're getting less than 3 hours worth of content for 5 days a week (Mon-Fri, 8pm-12am). For the rest of the time, ie, 21 hours a day on a week day and the WHOLE 24 hours a day on weekends, you'll get repeat telecasts of the same shows, ads and fillers. Premium content my.....!

Either make the channel totally ad-free or (atleast) double the content to 30+ hours a week instead of the current 15 hours/week and maybe it'll be worth it. Until then, it's priced atleast twice as much (if not more) as it should be. Subscribing to it at these rates is only going to hurt the customers in the long run as every new english HD channel will try to charge a premium and yet show ads and give us very little, though exclusive content.

Well bro then u have to decide 2 things

Firstly nothing will come uncensored as government does not allow it and its a right thing to do as TV is a public medium.
Secondly do u even know how much chs like ESPN HD and STAR cricket HD cost to an dth or cable operator, check the website of star india, either be ready to pay moe for good content as in this case STAR premiere is bringing shows just 1 day or few days after US Telecast or be happy with more ads and old content. The so called HBO Defined and hits r ad free but they telecast new movies like The Dark Knight Rises which are 1 year old.

U can't blame a dth operator for cost of a channel, blame broadcasters like star who play ads as well as charge a bomb for subscription.

In case of STAR World Premiere very few ads will be played that too later as time goes by and as acquiring rights of so many latest shows costs a lot so they are justified to charge a premium cost. Rs 60 is nothing to what it will cost anyone to download new shows that too illegally

Don't worry friends if no one is subscribing for Star world premier for Rs.60 automatically those dumbos will automatically reduce the price affordable.

dino- your logic is a bit skewed towards the broadcaster. BTW, the broadcast rights of the series that are being telecated through SWP, is not that high and by doing a simulcast, they can atleast some extra revenue from the small group of audiences in India that are interested with those shows, as otherwise there is a high chance that they will download to access the content. Even now possible India audiences will do that as the telecasted content is highly censored and available still only with a select few. They can charge Rs60/-, which sure is a huge premium from Indian context, then they should live upto it by way of more high quality content and zero advt (atleast within playtime).

TataSky used to be good an year ago. Things have changed. This has to be the worst of what's gone wrong with TataSky. Let's see how long they can continue to charge Rs. 60 premium .

I think you should read and understand a post before commenting. Bro.

Eh, I didn't ask for uncensored content. I only highlighted that it's the same censored content which you'd have seen if it was telecasted a few months later on other channel. No idea how you took it to mean I was complaining about this specific channel's censoring or even implying it had to do something with the broadcaster instead of Indian government.

Secondly do u even know how much chs like ESPN HD and STAR cricket HD cost to an dth or cable operator, check the website of star india,
I do. But do you know we're already paying more than any other dth provider? Here, lemme help you...

Tata sky mega pack costs ?6400/year
Dish TV HD royale costs ?6400/year
Videocon equivalent pack costs ?5770/year

And if you go for an even longer duration recharge, the same packs cost 325/pm (5year recharge) for Dish tV and 400/pm (5years recharge) for Videocon compared to 530/pm in tatasky which doesn't even have a discount for longer recharge.

Both dish and Videocon have all the channels tata sky has and includes even more HD and SD channels not available in tata sky. They're paying the same fee to the broadcasters for the channels as tata sky. Actually more than tata sky as they have even more channels to pay for.

So I don't really get what your confusion here. Tata sky customers ARE paying more than others for less content. The least we could expect from them was to stay true to their word and not change the conditions after we bought the mega pack. Sure, charge extra for it when we renew the pack but not before. That's bad faith. Still that's fine with me as it's not totally tata sky's fault.

I don't know about you but last I knew, you can't telecast a movie on tv which was released a day ago. Traditionally, first it goes to a theater. Then depending on its success, the DVD and blu rays are launched a few months later. Followed by rentals and finally TV broadcast.

Also, I don't have either of the hbo channels but pretty sure they aren't re-playing the same 15 hour content the whole week. And you can't compare movies to tv shows. Its a different beast altogether. In the end its personal preference though so I can understand if its not value enough for you but it is for me. Especially compared to SWPremier. Please don't force your preference on me the same way I'm not forcing mine on anyone else here. So far I've only posted my opinions without asking or advicing anyone else to change theirs.

U can't blame a dth operator for cost of a channel, blame broadcasters like star who play ads as well as charge a bomb for subscription.

Now if only you'd read my post you'd known I made the same statement already. From my previous post....

No need to wait. They are already showing ads. Thrice in a 22 minute episode!

As far as justification is concerned, it isn't IMO for the reasons I've already posted twice here. Unless I find a few shows I really HAVE to watch within days of its release, I don't intend to subscribe again next month. You (and any/everyone else) can disagree but please remember to speak for yourself and not for everyone else.

I personally don't support that as an option and definitely not just to save 60 bucks. But wether you do it or not, it doesn't mean you should bend over to these broadcasters either. A fair price for the content is all I'm asking.

But the worst part is, I'd probably still end up subscribing to the channel as 60 bucks a month isn't that much. I burn more than twice that in a day in smokes. It's not going to break mine or anyone else's home budget here. It's the principle and the future which is at question here. Not the mere 60 bucks a month.

Yes, I got similar response from Harit Nagpal. The Specials category was added in Feb.

On my further query on bandwidth, he said that short-to-medium term capacity will be taken care of by converting to MPEG4, and long term plans are being worked out with ISRO. So it probably means they don't have GSAT10 tps :(

From what I gather, the special thing about this channel is that it takes the most watched programs from different US broadcast channels and puts it into one channel. So the cost for negotiating content from different broadcasters makes the cost of the channel go up. I may be wrong, and if so please correct me.

I'm not into TV series. But they say we get to see the same program content the same day before US does. Is that true?

I can understand the problem of Tata Sky customers, how much betrayed they have felt due to such cheap tactics of Tata Sky for not providing 'Star World Premier HD' channel to its highest pack subscribers.

I faced the same heat when Airtel Digital TV introduced 'HBO Hits & HBO Defined' channels in March 2013. These channels were also not included by default for its highest pack customers having 'All Round and Magnum HD' packs.
I wrote to Airtel, TRAI and every person possible to fight against this tactic of Airtel DTH. There was almost 3 months of continuous follow-up on various emails. What I observed is... Airtel cited that these channels are into some premium category, so they won't provide these channels for free to its highest pack customers. But customers have to shell out extra Rs. 49 for viewing these channels.
During the entire conversation, TRAI guys seemed to be useless-ignorant-uneducated fellows. Every time Airtel sent an email to me, matter has been resolved and tried asked me to confirm the resolution. Again I tried to explain the story, but Airtel played the same cheap tactic of calling it a special premium category excuse and TRAI was like our PM nodding everytime "Theek Hai".
I wouldn't have bothered about paying another Rs. 49 to Airtel; but I really felt betrayed when it happened. I tried to fight it for all the highest pack customers. Unfortunately, there was no resolution. In the end, emails stopped...and nothing good happened.
(see the attached file for entire email conversation with Airtel and TRAI.)

I did not subscribe to the HBO channels. I would have; but these channels were meant be in HD, but Airtel provided its demodulated SD version, that too cropped for 4:3 SD TV viewing. No point in giving extra money for such useless telecast. They should have at least kept the aspect ratio in 16:9 if not in HD. But they are so fond of showing black bars and stretched pictures to customers.
