Small unboxing and initial impressions.

The amp retails at close to 1.2 lacs. I got a decent discount being a loyal customer since quite some time. Don't think those rates apply to everyone. But I can safely say 20% off would be a general value and further on your own negotiations.

Box was really heavy. Inside were the standard power cable, the YPAO Mike, fm antenna, and remote. Standard stuff.

Previous AVR was a marantz SR 6009. So this one has pretty big shoes to fill. What I miss about the marantz.... The remote, the menu and the general ease of use. This aventage is serious stuff. I think I'll need a lesson in just how to use the remote and the menus. The marantz was must easier to handle for the general fellow like me.

I'm still struggling with the menus. But getting the hang of it. The more I fiddle with it, the easier and faster I'm getting at it.

Ran the YPAO. Unlike audessey, this gizmo let's u choose where u want to keep the mike. It does not have specific positions. You can put the mike where u wish for measurements.

Again, since I used the marantz for quite a bit, i can make a comparison of sorts. Firstly, it's loud. The marantz is like smooth wine, the aventage is like a shot of tequila. I definitely can hear more detail and clarity in movies. For music too. However it's slightly bright for music in the higher octaves. These are initial impressions. Remember it needs a lil settling down and handshaking with my Emotiva as well. I'll wait for a few days and then fiddle again with the settings. Currently all default by YPAO.

Tomorrow Ed is coming over and we'll play around a lil bit with the settings.

Overall I'm very satisfied. I needed something thats new, big and shiny. Got it. Few pics attached.

Congrats on your AVR. Surprising shift from the Marantz.... What made you take this decision. Very few Yamaha owners compared to Marantz. I am one of them.

The gorgeous looks of the Yamaha! And I currently own a Yamaha fascino scooty so I'm a lil biased towards the yammie ;)

Honestly just wanted something newer and different. Hence chose the aventage series.

Congrats on your New Yamaha. Waiting for the comparison between the marantz.
The marantz was very smooth sounding very natural. No effort. I think the Yamaha is very new, and feels lot powerful. Plus the video processing is very very up to date! Getting used to the yamaha will take a lil while. There is too much detail and extra information for me to filter!

Congrats on the new Yamaha, is that the reason you wanted cables that are warmer ? ( looks like the future planning was already on)
Do let us know impressions of the Yamaha by it self as well as being used as a preamp to the emotiva

Well....i visited Derek today and spent a little over an hour...the objective of the day was to:

1. Hear the Golden Ear 50c center speaker....
2. See the Yamaha up close and critic it....

The Golden Ear 50c center speaker is indeed compact....fits well under the Flat 4k LG TV.....packs a punch too.....decent dialogues....very clear......I am considering to go for it....the 3c model as i want it more compact.....

The Yamaha built quality is very rich.....elite looks and strong built quality like a tank.......the transformer is in the center of the AVR.....the sides have the power amp circuits...a well laid out board.....Video processing is seamless....advanced....lot of settings and parameters available.....

Overall performance wise....much much better than the Rx series or V series of the past.......fiddled around to enhance some sound effects....works like a charm.....

As always Derek is a great guy to spend time with cracking jokes...discussing current affairs....he is very excited and it is indeed money well spent.....his system looks better now....many brands and they way they are all hooked up will make any newbie gasp with awe!

Looking forward to visiting him soon again in the near future...... ;)

Congratulations Derek. I am hopeful this is going to have a long innings with you :).
Do stay with it and enjoy it rather than having another upgrade within a short time.

Quick question, can I run the YPAO with the power amp connected to the Yamaha? Or do the speakers have to be directly connected to the Yamaha?

Great, done that today, results were slightly different. Seems like an improvement in the center channel for sure.
