Yamaha Aventage RX -A1070

I had the good opportunity to visit Derek to hear his new Tannoy Revolution XT-8F speakers. In fact his Yamaha Aventage AVR, Emotiva BAS-X A300 power amp, Schiit and Hagerman phono preamps, even the TV have changed from the last time I visited. I had supreme fun browsing through the offerings on Tidal highres music streaming. It was the first time for me. They have an impressive collection, though by no means exhaustive.

We made minor adjustments to one speaker to have equal SPL from the left and right speakers.

The sound from the Tannoy is way, way more refined than the Deftech bookshelves. Mid centric male and female vocals are a real pleasure to listen to. Vocals have a warm presence and the singer really sings for you in the room. Highs are likely to open up further with more hours. Being a large-ish floor stander, bass can be a bit overwhelming on bass-heavy tracks, but otherwise on regular tracks it was unobstrusive. Hearing proper weight and texture of acoustic standing bass is always a great pleasure, and the Tannoy did a remarkably good job. Our source for most of the evening was Tidal, though we played a few tracks on the Technics 1200 (after swapping out to a brand new Audio Technica AT 440 MLB cartridge). We also swapped from his Schiit Mani phono preamp to the Hagerman. I felt that both played in the same performance ballpark, but it's too early to judge as the cartridge was just mounted.

A very enjoyable evening. Thanks for having me over:)

Thank u so much for coming over. It’s always a pleasure when u do so. And thanks so much for taking out the time to listen and make the necessary adjustments and changes. I’m just having so much fun listening to them right now. The synergy between the Yamaha, the Emotiva and the tannoys took me by surprise too.

Yes tidal is amazing! And my new playlist that you made is killer. Never have I heard such good vocal and instruments playing in unison. Thanks again for taking out the time after work and coming over and staying for dinner too.

Small unboxing and initial impressions.

The amp retails at close to 1.2 lacs. I got a decent discount being a loyal customer since quite some time. Don't think those rates apply to everyone. But I can safely say 20% off would be a general value and further on your own negotiations.

Box was really heavy. Inside were the standard power cable, the YPAO Mike, fm antenna, and remote. Standard stuff.

Previous AVR was a marantz SR 6009. So this one has pretty big shoes to fill. What I miss about the marantz.... The remote, the menu and the general ease of use. This aventage is serious stuff. I think I'll need a lesson in just how to use the remote and the menus. The marantz was must easier to handle for the general fellow like me.

I'm still struggling with the menus. But getting the hang of it. The more I fiddle with it, the easier and faster I'm getting at it.

Ran the YPAO. Unlike audessey, this gizmo let's u choose where u want to keep the mike. It does not have specific positions. You can put the mike where u wish for measurements.

Again, since I used the marantz for quite a bit, i can make a comparison of sorts. Firstly, it's loud. The marantz is like smooth wine, the aventage is like a shot of tequila. I definitely can hear more detail and clarity in movies. For music too. However it's slightly bright for music in the higher octaves. These are initial impressions. Remember it needs a lil settling down and handshaking with my Emotiva as well. I'll wait for a few days and then fiddle again with the settings. Currently all default by YPAO.

Tomorrow Ed is coming over and we'll play around a lil bit with the settings.

Overall I'm very satisfied. I needed something thats new, big and shiny. Got it. Few pics attached.
One picture is showing two HDMI outs. I think one can be used to attach with a small monitor while listening to music only?

Congrats on your purchase. Yamaha is my favorite brand. I think it's the only company which have so many products ranging from musical instruments to motorcycles to audiophile products and whatnot, they make world class products of highest standards in each category, astonishing really.

Why would I need small monitors when I have larger than life tannoy floorstanders?

I think he meant a Small LED Screen ( Similar to computer MONITORS) which has HDMI inputs. at first i thought the same Monitors as in speakers

A little Birdy came and told me.....he is planning to sell the AVR....so look out for the ad....should be coming shortly...up for grabs!

;)

Haha yes, I’m out of the country on a flight, will be back tomorrow. And yes, I plan to sell the Yamaha and get a bigger 11 channel amp. Will do a sale thread tomorrow. In Mumbai I could not even plan for a 5.1 setup because of my room. Now that I’m shifting to chennai, I have a dedicated room. And more speakers placement and choices. Hence I’ll be selling my Yamaha.

Since you have already shared intial pics of the AVR which i know is in the best NEW condition even now...as it is barely 2 months old and must be used for not more than 50 or 60 hours given your busy schedule.

I am sure you would have already got many messages requesting you to reserve the AVR for them.....all the best.......may the lucky member get it!

Derek is using a Def Tech SuperCube 4000. It is a good sub and the auto caliberation did a good job to ensure the right frequencies are sent to the Def Tech Bookshelfs and to the Sub. He tried placement options for the sub which did add a huge improvement.

Once he got the Tannoys, he had to run the auto setup again and i believe the trim helped in adjusting (fine tuning) the low frequencies. I guess its like MultiEQ or MultiEQ XT which helps in trimming and tonal settings across frequencies for every speaker.
