With the release of the new ipad with the more than HD resolution IPS panel this product has become the best portable media player out there for video atleast.
The only problem is the playback of 1080p video in most formats at a sufficient bitrate.
The apple IOS default mediaplayer is not capable of playback of 1080p videos (or you have to decrease the bitrate to less than 2500 which is annoying). Many a times it is impossible to transfer / sync the data from the computer to the device because of " cannot playback file error messages".
Most free mediaplayers (flexplayer, playerextreme HD, acemusic) can play various formats however they are very bad or incapable of playing 1080p mkv because apple allows hardware acceleration of its own formats alone (i.e mp4, m4v, mov).
Acemusic is exceptionally good in playing the apple supported formats so if you have a powerful PC/laptop with a core i7 processor convert all your videos using a free application like anyvideo convertor to the new ipad setting increasing the bitrate of video to 5000 and audio to 320 kbps.
Very recently a new application has been launched by the creators of Goodplayer namely the POWERPLAYER which allows hardware acceleration of MKVs as well as other video formats and costs 3 dollars.
