Hi,

Looking for 4k home theater in my basement (Ahmedabad/Gujarat) : Budget under 8 lakhs. I will be playing 4k UHD rips over NAS using nVidia Shield (already own) and PS4 Pro. I have Plex server on my Synology DS918+ NAS with tbs of data! Including tons of 4k movie rips. I have GBPS LAN.

The room size is about 20x15 feet (ceiling height 10ft) in the basement with not a lot of ambient light and will be used purely for media room (audio and video).

I have zeroed in on some equipments, please suggest :

1) AVR : Denon X4400h 9.2 (or Should I go with Yamaha?)
2) Speakers : Klipsch ref series 5.1.4 setup with IC (in ceiling)
3) Projector : Torn between Epson 5040ub(here ew8300) OR Optoma UHD 60.

Please share your suggestions. If you would like to suggest alternates.

Denon 4500H will be available soon. If you are listening to music you can consider upcoming Marantz 7013, that is coming with Learning remote.

You may also consider SVS Ultra Series Speakers and SVS Prime Elevation Ceiling Speakers and SVS PB-4000 Sub.

Epson 8300 is not real 4k projector, you may consider JVC or Sony 4K projectors.

Thanks for quick suggetions. Just a slight clarification, I am aware it's not "real" 4k, but the differences are very minor. I have looked at both (Sony "native" 4k projector at my friends house) and Epson 8300 at house where my architect recently worked. 2x price difference between both of them is not justifiable.

Great info on Denon 4400h. You mentioned Marantz instead of Denon ? I thought they are same company now ? Yes audio is important, any links to how Marantz will be more helpful then Denon will be highly appreciated. I do plan to use lots of audio via AirPlay (from Plex app) via iphones, tablets etc.

Would love to see any comparison between Klipsch and SVS ? Pricingwise they are similar ?

Again thanks so much for taking time to reply.

If you would like to suggest alternates.

1) AVR : Denon X4400h 9.2 (or Should I go with Yamaha?)

Since you have a good budget and a very good room size, I would suggest Denon x 8500, a Flagship AVR capable of 9.2.6 (with additional power amplifier)..

2) Speakers : Klipsch ref series 5.1.4 setup with IC (in ceiling)

You will most defnetly need two subwoofers, as they do more good in a room than one, to cover the lower freq (20 - 80Hz).. If those freq are taken care of, then you can choose the smallest BS speaker in Klipsch ref range itself.. something like RP150 and may be go all identical if you can/like them..

Any speaker that has wallmount option & a thread insert at the back, will help you position them with tilt towards your listening position..

3) Projector : Torn between Epson 5040ub(here ew8300) OR Optoma UHD 60.

No idea on the 4K projectors..

Are you considering an acoustic transparent screen for the projector? It would help you position the center channel speaker at ear level behind the screen, inline with L/R speakers.. You won't get this flexibility with usual vinyl screens..

>Spare some money for a good sub, if you have not yet planned. Ideally you can think about a dual sub combination in that room
>UHD65 should be better compared to UHD60. Check it out
>Keep some budget for recliners, false ceiling (if needed), acoustic treatment etc
>A good cabinet which can hide all these equipment
>Spare enough for good wiring and needed connectors
>What about a universal controller
>I guess your room is already air conditioned , else thats a must
>Posters, decoration?

You should surely get a power amp at least for the LCR.
get 2 subwoofers.
For how much is the Epson projector available ?

You have very good budget..
Denon amps are good .. but Denon X4400h Amp seems to have Power Output (8 ohm, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.08% 2ch Drive) 105 W . I think you may look for power output of 150 -200 watts RMS /channel @8ohms.
Or you can also plan to add emotiva power amplifier to boost the power to speaker . (they can boost upto 200 -300 watts RMS per channel)

Consider buying amp with pre outs. So you can hook up to external power amplifiers in the future.

You can get two Subwoofer for better movie experience. (Initially go with one , then you may add later also).

Kilpsch speakers as per my taste it sounded too bright ,
You may check : Sonus Faber Speaker (that sounded nice to me ). Since its expensive i cannot buy..(have to plan in future )

You can also check Monitor audio

You may also look at Sonodyne SRA series powered speakers.

Sonodyne also have custom cinema installation ..you may check.

AFAIK, the PJs mentioned here does not come with native 4k resolution. I think the cheapest native 4k pj will cost at least 5 lakhs. If you are a perfectionist and crazy, go for native 4k.

I'm still surviving with FHD as all my gadgets support FHD only.

For AVR, Instead of Denon you may consider Marantz 6012 / 7012 / 7013.

Since you are setting up dedicated home theater, you may consider UHD 65 instead of UHD 60.

With such a huge budget, I will suggest you to meet an audio specialist who can help you in selecting components as well as in room acostics. You can share your audio test, requirements , future upgradation and room diamentions.
Definitely you will pay a premium for that but you will get well calibrated killer system with ultimate movie and music experience.

That's the best approach.. but finding a good audio specialist is the difficult part. I'm still in search of someone who is really good in acoustics.

Does a person need to be perfectionist or crazy to get a 4k ? It totally depends on personal preference and screen size. And loads of 4k content is available now. I have been to demo rooms with 4k projectors and they are awesome in my opinion.

The word 'crazy' was used as a figure of speech. Not medically ill. Higher the resolution, better the output. End of the day, it all comes to affordability and personal preference.

Hi You have a very good budget.
We can tell the Pros & cons and suggestions .But remember you are final user and decisions to be taken on your likings and other personal factors and budget preferences. So investing such a huge amount requires more auditions and patience.

1 ) Denon X4400 is a VFM product and has good reviews . I have listened it once with ProAC speakers .U can consider it if your are limiting to 9.2 channels (or 5.1.4 or 7.1.2).My suggestion will be add a Multi channel power amplifier later atleast it will take 11.2 channels (so u can get 7.1.4) ,also you can drive the Front & centre speakers to have very good dynamics.
If budget permits look for alternate options like Denon X6400 ,Marantz SR6012 ,SR7012 ,SR8012 & Yamaha Aventage series ,Anthem MRX720 .
In all cases adding Power amps will increases the Dynamics,Head Room ,Power to all channels and punch. This can be done if budget permits at a later stage too.

2 ) Speakers : Klipsch are good speakers for movies. But here in India it is priced like Hell. (2 to 3 times of price of US).The other speaker options like Emotiva Airmotiv series ,Polk RT series ,KEF Q series ,Dali Opticon or Zensor seies ,Mission ,Monitor Audio can be checked.

3) Projector : Both are Good pj u have mentioned ,do a demo if possible.Epson has wide range of service .Do check for Optomo UHD 65 too.
The models are not native 4k .Its a kind of 4k upscaling they do. The native 4k pj from Sony starts from around 4L. Also check JVC pj ,they offer the deepest black in pj.The upscaling4k pj from JVC are comparatively better ,but costly.
There is a lot of debate with this native 4k pj and faux type (upscaling )4k pj.
U may see the real difference when the content is been really mastered from a 4k source.
Good luck.

Thanks guys for all your help. I was out of country just back this week. Now that Denon has X4500h either I can get good deal on X4400 or I can get new "IMAX Enhanced" one. I would rather choose older model if I can get better pricing on it. Yes I will get demo in person.

We dont know yet how far better this IMAX enhancement works in a Home Enviroment .See the price difference b/w X4400 & X4500 and take call .
Most of AV manufacturers does these marketing strategy by adding some features and raising the MRP of the product .

Hello,

Can anyone please confirm whether the remote controller supplied with Denon x4500h is backlit ?

I am trying to find that answer without any luck.

Thanks,
Partha
