Hi All,
Just bought an ASUS Xonar DX, now want to indulge in a good quality VFM speakers with or without AVR.
Models that i have in mind:
Onkyo: HTS3400 25k
Edifier S550 19k
Edifier DA 5000 Pro. 10-12K?
Don't want to buy Logitech, want good quality surround effects in music (2.1 is better for musci i know, let's not get into that) /movies and games not really very high power/volume.

Will use these with PC only. Please pour in suggestions.

Vivek.

hello there!

the onkyo system has an AVR, so most probably it won't utilise your sound card's abilities (anyone could please correct me if am wrong). since using your sound card is a priority for you (and you are enthusiastic of your new purchase, as depicted by your sig ;)), i would suggest the all-analogue edifier S550, which would well utilise the Xonar DX, and from whatever i've read about the S550, its quite a 'musical' system too. i've Edifier's DA5000 Pro coupled with Xonar DX, and though quite surprising, believe me, for a 5.1 system, it dishes out a much likeable sound in music, though not audiophile-grade, but certainly such, which, when falls upon your ears, you instantly recognise that "yes! this is a good sound" (after proper burn-in & with a capable sound card). may seem a bit exaggerated, but it has to be listened to be believed. and it gives a solid, 'window-shattering' performance in gaming & movies, without going off-balance (read, 'distorting'). hence am optimistic towards the S550/S750.

a link for your reference:

Edifier S550 (you need to translate the page to english. open it up with google chrome.)

you could also check for S750, though i feel its not available in india.

another system that could be looked at:
Energy 5.1 Take Classic HTS, if you can stretch your budget. these would've to be ordered from amazon itself.

You can use any of the analog input of the avr for connecting your sound card's stereo out, but no 5.1 analog support. For 5.1, use S/PDIF or HDMI out.

For ETC, he will still need an avr or 5 channel amp to run the satellite speakers. Only the subwoofer is powered.

Hey bro,
1) Ideally i want to use digital out of my xonar (in other words buy digital speakers) so the HTS 3300/3400/3500 fit the bill but i feel these HTIBs are way too overkill for my 10 x12 room. So i'll probably rule out Onkyo.
2) Next in line is S550 which is also too powerful for my room (correct me if i'm wrong) + it's not digital.
3) Next in line is Edifier DA5000 Pro for around 10k but again not digital. Decent speakers but i've heard C3 or C6 sounds better than these.
4) I'm now thinking about C6 (12-13k) because it has a dedicated AMP (if that really makes a difference). However with the C6 i get the freedom to play music from a pen drive without keeping my PC ON and i get 5.1 analog sound.
5) If i stick with 2.1 then i can think of S730 (15k) which is a powerful beast and is digital.
6) Is there any good set of 5.1 Digital speakers that i can get under 15K?
Hi Rocky

I suggest the onky HTS 3500 for 25k as the 3500 has usb playback. 3400 for 25 is a ripoff.

Thanks bro. Problem is the edifier guy told me DA5000 doesnot sound as good as C3 or C6 mainly because its bass is heavier than C3/6. heavy bass is not my priority crystal clear sound is.

Dude you can try listening to Sony DAV-DZ 310, but I would suggest you go with Onkyo 3500 or JBL SCS140BK+AVR 134(same price as onkyo 35000 i.e. ~25k) if budget is not a problem. The reason is all the edifier systems you have listed do not have spdif in nor HDMI in. Also, the sound which you'll get from edifier would be nothing in comparison to the sound you'll be getting from JBL and Onkyo. Now, I would like to point out that although both Onkyo and JBL have HDMI, JBL does not support HDMI audio processing so you will have to attach a separate spdif coaxial/optical cable for sound. But as far as the sound is concerned, JBL sounds much better than onkyo 3400, and I am quite sure of it since I have both. And 3400 and 3500 sound pretty much the same. Anyways, point is, buy a good system which has all ins and outs so you don't have to buy another one at a later date in case you want your speakers to multitask.....

Yup ... reconsidering... :) Thanks man.

Depends on the type of music and the content (mp3 or FLAC).

If its loud music you enjoy I'm sure it will sound good but don't expect detail, clarity, soundstage and other audiophile terms. Also, not for any critical listening but will do justice for loud party music or music playing in the background while you are surfing the net.

Typically PC speakers are good for movies... not so much for music. Only exceptions (that I have personally heard) have been Creative Inspire T6060 and Altec Lansing MX5021 which sound fairly good for music as long as they are not mp3 rips of low bitrate.

These are puny speakers when compared to the S550 :clapping:

Thanks buddy! Just connected it to a laptop's headphone out with only 2.1 speakers and they sound very good even in 2.1 mode. These sound way better than I expected! Can't wait to connect it on the Xonar DX & in 5.1!
Congrats,do post your views later.
