Hello all,

Now that I have a projector (see the thread "BenQ W1070 at Mangalore Bangalore"), I want to build a dedicated HT on the terrace which already has galvanized sheet roofing. I plan to build an enclosure 13X18 that is 9 feet high. Please help me with advice on the following:

1. I intend to Bison cement sheet for walls; what are my alternatives?
2. What is the best material for sound absorbent screens which I can draw across the walls on all sides to cut down sound reflections off the walls.
3. Which brand of HDMI would I go for a length of 15 feet?

Lastly the screen.

Right now I cannot afford an expensive screen; my priorities are different. I may buy one by and buy. Right now I intend to go for black out cloth or some such DYI solution. What is brand name/commercial name for the black out cloth in India? Where would I buy one?

George,
Please can you tell me something more about this "anutone"? Local carpenters here have a problem in knowing what it is. What is this material? Does it have any other local name?
Thanks.

Galvanized sheet roof? Is that the tin or metal roof? In that case, you will have to treat the entire ceiling. Put atleast 6" of rigid insulation on all the ceiling and cover with cloth. It will help in keeping the heating / cooling losses as well.

You can use the same insulation as acoustic material on the walls. All the commercial acoustic products are made of insulation material. Could be a cheaper alternative to them.

Manoj,

A bit of explanation is required. I live in a flat in which I have exclusive rights to 700 SqFt of Terrace which can reached from a staircase from within the house. This terrace is already covered by galvanized sheets and I am only going to construct a cabin under it with extra roofing. The society laws do not permit me to use brick and mortar. There will be more that 5 feet air space between the sheets put up by the builder and the ones I am going to put.

I have gone through other threads on this forum and am now actively considering Woodwoold sheets. But they look drab and pose an aesthetic challenge. I dont know how to make woodwool walls look beautiful.

Any tips?

George,

Thanks. Found Anutone as also couple of other sites. Anutone's site is not well maintained and I could not get much information. I have sent them an email and am waiting for an answer. Thanks again

tintin2k2,

Thanks. Great site. Must be American or European. I dont think I am that rich to get one of those done for me. They are mostly turn-key projects done by professionals. I am a poor DIY guy working on shoe-string budget. But there is no harm in browsing, right?

Thanks. That was very kind of you. Keep me posted

Ok, in that case, you are better off using that air gap and fill it with insulation to make it inert. Otherwise, it will become like a resonating chamber, especially for low frequencies. It would be better to do a suspended ceiling below the tin ceiling and fill the gap with insulation. Same thing should be done for the walls. What material is the walls installed by the builder? You can use plywood as the walls you want, wrapped in cloth (color of your choice). This whole thing can be done very cheap yet can look very nice.

My whole point was that.... You can always look at those designs... take them to your local architect and ask them to do it for you. For false ceilings, walls and soundproofing HFV members are there to help. For interiors use that site to the most.. I have used few ideas from that website for my new house and trust me... everyone asks me where did I get that idea from... ;)

Manoj,

I appreciate your idea; but the problem is that the corrugated sheet would make a deep inverted "V" shape below and the space between this shape and the suspended ceiling would be too much of a volume to be stuffed completely with sound absorbent material. For the Walls I am thinking of 1/2 inch bison cement sheet from the outside screwed on from outside and 1" woodwool from inside. But woodwool all inside makes the room look dreary and am look for ideas to turn into aesthetically acceptable.
Thanks. Give me more ideas!

Tintin2K2,

Thanks. I get the general idea. Any specific ideas for solid, non-vibrating, long-lasting false walls? I cant use bricks on terrace--society laws!

Try PoP based walls.. sound absorption is much better.. if you were in Chennai, I would have put you in touch with someone who does false ceiling here. :)

Tintin2K2,

PoP -- you mean plaster of paris, right? Never heard of that. Could you directly me to some web information on this? Shall be grateful. I will, meanwhile, try to Google around for information on this.

Thanks.

It's not PoP walls, 3 kinds of partitions can be used instead of bricks, but you have to use steel channels and angles for roofing
1. Gypsum partitions with G I wall framings, this is not advices as water absorbent.
2. Bison board partitions with GI wall framings, this water resistant,
3. finally aerocon wall panels, water resistant.
My advice, use profile Metal sheets for walls and roof, do the interiors with bison board.

ravidharap,

Are you some kind of a magician? You have read my mind and plans in such an uncanny manner that I do not know what to say! I was just going to use GI frames for structure and clad it with bison cement board from outside and woodwool panels from inside! "Profile metal sheets" is exactly what I was going to use, only I did not know it by that name -- thanks for educating me.

My dimensions are 18'X13'. Do you think with the above material it would be sturdy?

You seem to be a technical guy. Please share your experience and educate beginners like me.

Once again, thanks for this site and people like you.
