Amazon Kindle

Iam looking for an e-reader that would support like:
* To scan the school/college text books of various classes and degree subjects.
* convert to pdf format (pls specify any s/w to convert)
* view them without any hitches in the e-reader.
* Not interested in wifi or 3g. Plain use 100% e-book-reader.

Iam still wary if amazon kindle can support this. Or does the indian e-readers can do this job?
Anyone can provide me a path from where to source an e-reader?

Your all requirements ae centred around the PDFs. Kindle 3 may not be a good choice. Kindle DX may be ok.

Lets understand why kindle is not good for PDFs. Its because of its screen size. Any text book can be formatted to match the reading comforts of screen size. PDFs arelike pictures and ll aspects locked. So once you read on screen of small size it would be difficult to read small fonts. In case you zoom in to enlarge fonts then you would have to navigae left and right to read the width of the page. It does not make a comfortable reading.

Your choice should be a large screen device or convert text books to word documents. Have a look at Kindle DX or sony PRS etc.

Great pics, Taurean Bull!
The last time I contemplated buying a Kindle, I wound up buying an iPad! The iPad made my Dell laptop redundant. I am now planning to sell the laptop, and use the proceeds to buy a Kindle :)

Few concerns on Kindle :-

Non user replaceable battery so not sure how it will be fixed , if God forbid it goes bad in India .
Native PDF support is very rudimentary without text re-flow so zooming and zooming out of a page to see the pdf file would be quite cumbersome
how can 3G work in India ?? AFAIK it would work only in places where Amazon has a tie-up with mobile network providers and am I am not sure if any Indian telco ( Airtel , Vodafone) has any 3G sharing agreement with Amazon for Kindle !!

The battery has a very long life. As per Amazon one charge lasts for about 2 weeks with 3G off. The battery wont go dead before several years. So far no issues with battery.

PDF as I already explained does not have to do anything with kindle capabilities. You scan a book of page size of Kindle and it would work like a charm. PDF is like a picture if you scan a bigger page size and try to see in shorter screen of course there would be problems. One can always convert PDF to word,ePub, Mobi etc.

Amazon has the worldwide agreement. It provides 3G/EDGE/GPRS whichever is available. Most of India is covered. You can check the coverage in following link:-

Guys, got a Decal Girl skin themed "Nirvana" from amazon and applied to it. A very accurately cut item and protects the kindle very well. Pics...
