An evening spent 'tweaking' Avidyarthy's ATL Speakers

Had Trittya and Miroflex over at my place today .... 12.30 PM to 4.30 PM.

Wonderful sessions on Squeezebox-Topping-JBL and CDp-Krell-Krypton TLs were accomplished in the 4 hours ... with a hearty lunch on the side! BTW, the sumptous menu on lunch was music, and guns in the latter part .. :p.

Mums the word ... let them feed in their observations ............

Fellow member Trittya and I spent a very 'soulful' and engrossing afternoon listening to a varied collection of music using a number of sources from internet radio to CD and MP3.

First off was a short session of ghazals from the internet using a Squeezebox connected to a Topping Tripath amplifier and JBL mini monitors. For clarity and transparency of sound it would be hard to beat. The wonder is that the speakers were perched high up on top of a tall cupboard.

We then moved on to a Marantz CD 6003 player with Krell amplification and transmission line speakers designed and made by Hari Iyer, discussed in this thread. We listened to music from the film 'Lagaan' as well as Sufi, Hindustani classical and light classical and folk music. The vocals were very clear and mellow. The overall sound quality was again most impressive with a deep and yet tightly controlled bass. There was little or no boominess even at loud listening levels.

A very enjoyable session thanks to Hari Iyer and his TL speakers and mine host Avidyarthy and fellow member Trittya.

Regards.

Have given a slight toe-in to the speakers @ 5 deg. Earlier, they had been set with 0 toe-in. There is indeed a slight 'further' improvement in the overall SQ.

The final speakers placement is as hereunder:

- toe-in: 5 deg on both
- distance from the front wall: 4.5 ft
- distance from the side walls: 2.5 ft
- distance between the speakers: 7 ft
- 'listening' distance: 10 ft

(all distance based measurements taken from the front centre of the speakers)

Arrived at this hopefully FINAL placement while hearing out 'Lagaan' and 'Swadesh' tracks. Sounded intoxicating after the very very minor adjustments!

:)

Spend less on research now!
You possess the same amp that I have .... Krell kav400xi. Now, all you now need is a pair of Krypton TL FS. Too much research and manipulations already done by both, Hari and me on this combination. Unlike what you have noticed with the Krell on your existing speakers, this combination sounds 'tubey', mellow, yet, with all details crystal clear, and, with the addition of a very tight and accurate bass. Me thinks that this bass quality is not achievable from any other speaker design. It is an inherent strength of the TL design.

With my Vincent / Carver M1.0T combo and MF Pre it is sounding tubey. My Thiel CS1.6 is completely broken now and no brightness and it is sound amazing. Thatz't as now happy with Thiel. However my research continues with full tube based system.

However want to hear your system atleast once how is it is paired with Krell. Will make it somehow in December.

You're coming to ncr in dec?! Feel free to drop by my place too then! :clapping:

A BUG enticed me to try out my Norge 1000 integrated amp with the Krypton TL FS .....

Observations:
Mids ............. almost as good as with the Krell
Upper mids .... Krell has a slight upper hand
Lower mids .... again, Krell has a slight advantage
Highs ............ difference not distinguishable
Lows/bass ..... with Krell it is tighter, slight looseness observed with Norge

Overall: on a scale of 10, if with the Krell the SQ is 10, then, it is 8.5 with Norge 1000.

Verdict: Pretty admirable. :clapping:

A 15K amp of 125W @ 4 O taking on a 150K amp of 400W @ 4 O !!!! ... with minor misses on the SQ. The Norge was able to play effortlessly at 12'O clock position with no distortion at very high volume ... more than what we generally hear. So, at 10'O clock, the listening levels were 'just' right. The Norge rears (fitted with the aluminium heat sinks) were getting pleasantly warm, which otherwise would remain at a lower level of warmth with my Sony speakers at the same volume levels.

I am pretty certain that the Norge 1000 (presumably a bright amp) would partner pretty well with the kevlar driver Krypton BS.

avid,

i am not surprised. Are you ?

Norge amps are supposed to be good.

But at the same time the law of diminishing returns kick in and its that difference of 10% or 15% in SQ that folks pay thru ther nose.

or WAAT a waste of time :lol: ??

Krell ko bech de.. Norge istemaal karna aur baaki paisa desh ke Khazane mein daal dena

I thing credit goes to speakers too.
I have tested Norge 1000 with Tannoy & didnt like much.Even one of FM compared Norge,Rotel prepower paired with Wharfedale 9.2 & yes he says he may not prefer Norge after hearing Rotel.

I beleive Norge amps are based on reverse engineered designs of classic amps commonly published on the web ... cant recall the details of the detective work though.

I believe the bottleneck is your source - the marantz cd player. Please try it with a better player and see if your observations remain the same.

If that is the case, then the krell integrated is a rather poor amp.

Yes, I agree to what you say. Have given an hours listen on a Norge 1000 with Wharf BS (dunno whether a 9.1 or 9.2) on the way back from office, at a colleague's place. Though, it sounded ok, was no match to my TL FS. So, definitely it is the speakers only.

So, the TL BS + Norge 1000 could turn out to be a fantabulous VFM purchase for audiophile grade SQ.

Possibly, it did cross my mind ...... but, have sworn not to indulge more on hi-fi. Lemme see how long I can persist with it! :D
