An evening spent 'tweaking' Avidyarthy's ATL Speakers

:D Ashokji, do not worry, the 'spirits' have been well discussed in detail in a number of threads in the past & no doubt will continue to be done in the future, only the thread starter should not have any objection to it. I don't think Avid will be having any objection to it w r t this thread :ohyeah:

Grubyhalo, your choice of Hercules is shared by quite a few on the forum including Avid & myself. Last time i was in chennai, i was shocked by the way the 'spirits' are consumed in 'special' areas & was an eyeopener for someone like me who has had it so easy living in a city like mine.

Back to contessa, it was a hit in late '80s to early '90s in mumbai, post which it disappeared with the emergence of lots of new entrants.

Have not seen it/rather tasted it in a long while, hence do not have much recollection of it now:p

For old monk fans, made in ghaziabad is far far better than the one made in khopoli.

Avid,
how 'bout getting some metalhead to bring his tunes & play 'em on the ATL's???;)

My friends always quote - Hari ke Ghar me sirf Gangajal hi milega. Sorry folks i am very ignorant about spirits even though i may be spiritual. But i am enjoying the posts here as i am learning some new stuff here.
Cheers,

Hi Hari

How are the speakers i heard at your place different from the newer ones?

Older Speaker:

- Classic TL tuned to 34 Hz, 2 meter based on AR Bailey's triangular wave-guide design.
- Woofer off-set based on Martin King's Alignment tables. Due to this there is a larger distance between woofer & tweeter making it sound somewhat un-natural.
- Cross-over network does not have Harmonic balance concept. Tolerance value of components in cross-over will be in the range 5% to 10%. No audiophile components in them (resistors, inductors & capacitors)
- This was build almost 3.5 years ago without much thought on Harmonic balance & other acoustics concepts. Diffraction was attempted but could not co-relate between therotical & practical values.
-Cross-over frequency selected was high - 3000Hz creating a narrow sweet spot and there by a poor off-axis response.
- mid-woofer is 6.5" and the tweeter is 1" Alinimum Dome.
- Damping density was varied in the line

Avid's ATL:
- Exo-Linear TL where the mid-woofer is at one extreme (like the Rethm speakers) and the line is tuned to around 68 Hz.
- All the issues with the above design was carefully studied and solved one by one.
- mid-woofer is 5.5" and tweeter is the same.
- Damping density is even throughout the line and the density lower than the older version.
- Cross-over attempted a Harmonic balance concept which i will still try to improvise on after some more feedback & research.
- Cross-over frequency is changed from 3KHz to 2.2KHz. In the next design will bring it even more lower to 1.9KHz to take the advantage of the natural acoustic roll-off of the tweeter. This will make the vocals even more clearer and natural.

I will be doing a complete refurbishing of my older speaker and may even scarp the enclosure and cross-over and implement Avid's design concepts in this speaker. Am waiting to settle down from my office work to do this. Monsoons in Mumbai is the best time to get your fantasies flowing. Will be happy to hear your inputs and ideas for further implement them in my design.

BTW how will you be placed next weekend (Saturday / Sunday) if i want to audition your Rethm speakers if you dont mind me and my brother walking in on an afternoon. Two other FM mpw & koushikp were interested if that is ok with you and family. Do let me know.

Regards,

NP, this will give me an opportunity to learn from other high-end designers and implement them in my designs too.

Thanks for the offer.

Yes its a tube amp Hifiashok

But this time its Lyrita DHT pre and 2A3 power amp with

80% nickel output transformers
49% nickel interstage transformers
nickel chokes
autoformer vol control

All of the above is from Dave Slagle

wish there was a 'like' button here (similar to fb).

must call up and congratulate one of the best people i kno for this!

When i heard Viren's 2A3 amp, i felt there was a lot of potential. To me the transformers is the core of a good SET amp and in Viren's case since he was building the amp at a price point, we decided to upgrade the transformers. Sorry for the OT

@ hifiashok .... nice of you to have come over ... thanks.

For benefit of rest of the people in here, a bit more of explicitness :) is looked forward to. Daresay, this to be one of the very first Indian made (planned to be commercialized) TL speaker design, and am sure the creator as well as a few 'more' connoisieurs :p in here would be grateful for your expert views (a horse's mouth impression). I am ending up using the same adjectives in few of my last posts! :p

BTW ... your gift is something to vie for. Won't expect to get it at any music outlet, whatever I know of ....

These are another commercialized TL speaker makers. Reviewed in a mag too..

sir, can i request u for your reasons for the shift pl.? would sincerely appreciate your inputs.

I have never owned a pure low watt SET amp. Always wanted one. The Rethm was an ultralinear SET amp using 6550 tubes. A conventional low powered SET to my ears is more open sounding and transparent. How much extremes and low level information you can get from a low powered SET amp is dependent on the quality of transformers used. Hence thats the area Viren and i worked on.

Yes, I know of it, but the price is sky high for their TL floorstanders! It ain't anywhere near-budget prices.

If you clicked on their blog section (in the website) you can actually see their design philosophy. It is more of a classical TL design ... a tapered TL, with the port on the top section in the rear. Nothing wrong with the design other than it being quite voluminous and 'big'. Have'nt heard it though ....... why don't you guys high-tail there for a listen?

May be i will go there next week as this place is very close to my office at Malad. I will give my listening impressioins, but will like if possible to be accompanied by other FMs so that my feedback is not baised and fair.

Well ... well ... well ... my neighbours had been indeed getting a huge dosage of hi-fidelity over the last couple of evenings/nights! At night, definitely try play soft, unlike in the evenings whence it is bone-jarringly loud.

This morning, as usual, while giving a wash to my Benz with a wet 'kapda' and bucketful of H2O, a neighbour putting up 50 m diagonally opposite my house stopped by and asked ... 'what was playing at your first floor?' ... 'never heard the tracks so well in my life before' ... 'wifey not around?' .. since the loud music remains on till 11 PM .... 'bought a new system?'

;) .. WHAT might be happening to the residents who are next or closer to my house? :D. The good part is, till now, no complaints .. no one has asked me to lower the volume ... maybe, the buggers are enjoying free-of-cost concerts every evening!

This is happening when I am going up to '85 - 90' max. on the Krell volume knob, otherwise capable of going till '151' :indifferent14:
