An evening spent 'tweaking' Avidyarthy's ATL Speakers

Agree to what you state, Prem sir.

But you see, I am very rich, very rich not because I possess huge disposable moolah ... very rich because I get satisfied, and once satisfied I draw a line ... a 'laxman rekha' and never attempt to cross it! That line is drawn!

Now, let me devote some time (new job permitting) on my other passion ... study on newer ways to harness renewable energy. Yes, study only. Can't implement. Have been able to focus on to something ... solar thermal power generation.

Definitely not saying that I would vanish from HFV .... ;)

I agree with Avid that you need to draw a line somewhere even if the desire to upgrade is high. No sense organ can be controlled or materially fulfilled or satisified. Its the nature of any sense organ. It can only be possible by controlling the passoinate desire however strong it may be. The desire to possess is even more bad than actually possesing the object of desire. In my case, even if i can design a full-range with Fostex and do have the moolah to build it in a month, or upgrade my hardware with high-end stuff i may still not want to upgrade just because my passion or desire is running high. Reason being it will last for a year or two and again i will want to upgrade. There is no end to it as rightly put by Prem. The only way to get out of this upgrade bug is to be fully satisfied with whatever you have and not desire. If you desire then possess it rather than only desiring as desire is bad than actually possessing the object of desire - reason - desire can lead to many negative emotions and actions and could influence your equilibrium of mind.

Here is my impression on Avid's speakers.

Overall decent for the price. Tonal balance was good. Integration of bass driver and tweeter was done as per Avid's taste of music. Since using small driver the bass was not to my liking. It was more like small full range driver which I can relate to as I have used a lot of Fostex based designs in the past.

Heard the Krell for the first time and not too much impressed. Probably more to with the source and quality of digital music we played.

Further (... marked) improvement in SQ after the curtains! The carpet is expected to increase it further, I bet.

imho, one of the biggest causes for further improvement, esp. in the higher end, would be when you would not need to use your fans, when there is no 'wind' rushing past the ears, when the room is quieter. now of course, 'burnin in' is taking on different meanings, so mayb out of the question.

Let 'em pour from them skies. Meybee then, them fans could stop swirling and relieve me of the feelin that am a pauper of current who cannot cooleth the room by any other means other than them swirling star fish'es'!

..........hilarious dada.......... so, wht mo is hidden in that; conservationist, renewable energy geek, ....now poet!

Loved that one! I am also in the same boat, but thankfully the rains have made Cochin cool which means I can listen to music with the ceiling fan off!

Unfortunately in Mumbai even if it rains, we still cannot switch off the fans even if ambient is cool due to high humidity.

dada, ur prayers hav been answered.

the weather is for garam chai (movin away from contessa 'n hercules), pakora (movin away fm cheekeeen) and moozik in quiet, clean atmosphere, rain-washed conditions (it just rained heavily in south delhi)!

Was attending to a family marriage invitation last evening, till late .... Yes, operating the sys now w/o the fans and YES .....

Switched the RCA cables to dedicated Interconnects from Virenji ... just now.

First ... I take back my words ... Ashish (Lakozy), then Virenji ... yes, 'fair' amount of SQ increase, no doubts ... to my 'un' or 'non' audiophile ears. Maybe, I have begun to tread on that territory! ;)

Bass: no further increase or improvement.

Mids: have become smoother, the sound decay (is this the terminology?) is more elongated ... just like when playing tubes! So, the sound is no longer tubey ... it is a replica of tubes. I can also distinguish an increase in the room filling of the mids, till now, the domain of only the bass.

Highs: a slight increase ... distinguishable.

VERDICT: very satisfied with the investment!

To add to the above, also had the opportunity to have a hear of Virenji's new speaker pair .... HORNS ... he told me, he is going to name it as such ... THE HORNS. Possesses a pair each of Eminence compression drivers and woofers. The compr drivers attached to a circular horn, while the enclosed woofer is attached to a square horn. The speaker pair stand less than 3' from the ground without a stand right now. The width is at 1.5' at the broadest point. Very very different looking pair to what we are used to, both from his stables as well as the markets.

To my ears, it sounded much better & more involving to his Harmony's as well as Amity's. The bass issue with his earlier creations is totally resolved now. I would pick it up with my eyes closed. And yes, had these been there during my earlier visit, I would have gone back on 'my word' to Hari .... might not have given him the opportunity to go ahead with the TL speakers, which, at that time was not even on drawing board stage! The 'manganese steel balls' would not have been challenged!

SQ in both, TL and Horns is different ... some may like one over the other. Only individual auditions side by side can make a discerning buyer decide which one he (yes .. he, not she as I am a branded MCP here) should go in for.

Now, we have two affordable "Made in India" audiophile speaker brands to choose from ... without breaking a sweat thru legwork or bank.

Hi Avid AKA MB (Manganese Balls) :D

Pls post some pics of the new cables & cost incurred.

Also how 'bout getting a pair of THE HORNS for the hall and thus set off a new challenge for MB w r t acquiring an amp for THE HORNS???

PS: Rains are in full swing in mumbai(parts of it), care to come down for some 'Hercules', eh MB??? ;)

My typo error ... should be 'manganese steel'. Google it to know more .... :)

Mumbai visit should now be possible from the new set up ... August, maybe. In fact, HAVE to come over then.

Posting pictures of the prototypes, of Viren's new horns. I love the LeCleac'h HF horns. They look fantastic.Similar wooden horns cost an arm and a leg if bought abroad.

These are only prototypes . Viren says there is still a lot of work to be done on the crossover etc,but initial results are very good. The drivers are the Eminence Beta 12A2, and the Eminence PSD2002. He will be using better drivers(Radian,GPA .....)in the final version .

I am trying to convince him to build something similar to the Blumenhofer Gran Gioia. Blumenhofer use GPA/Altec based drivers.

Blumenhofer Acoustics' Gran Gioia it keeps what the names promises

Regards
Rajiv

Thanks for the pic Rajiv, they sure look fabulous! Any idea what would be the tentative pricings of the HORNS???

Kudos to Virenji for his new creations, wish he is able to get them performing to their optimum ASAP :clapping:

the top (tweeter horn) is looking fantastic. The bottom needs to be made sexier. These would look wow!!
