hi
I have been following this DIY DAC GAMMA2
it has massive suport
and is said to kick some serious ass

Has anyone tried it
Is someone willing to give it a try

total cost works to around to $200 including the enclosure
a cheaper build without up-scaling and own enclosure would cost significantly less

Some research links
Gamma-2 (?2) DAC Thread - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio
gamma2 Compact High Performance DAC

build parts lists schematics and feedbacks are all there just look around

please sign me up - my participation is confirmed from my side - now kaushik you please confirm.

i will be happy if you do the ordering for me and others - it will save in shipping, and i can send you the money, including all expenses incurred. (parts, customs and shipping).

regards

ok here is another teaser for all the folks who dont want to/are afraid to make this dac on there own
there is a guy in USA who makes these dacs
ready built Gamma 1 is avail for around $165
Gamma 2 for around $200
and both will give the Cambridge dac magic a run for its money
you can contact him directly at *
email--- [email protected] {MisterX (Marshall Wyant)}

If you say this will give the dacmagic a run for its money then i presume the wolfsons on thesewould be better than beresford or keces also

A Dacmagic incorporates Dual Wolfson WM8740 DACs {http://www.cambridgeaudio.com/assets/documents/DACMagic2_A5.pdf}

The Gamma1 Incorporates Wolfson WM8501 (or WM8759)
A Gamma2 incorporates Wolfson WM8741, WM8742 or WM8740 DAC chips
(depending on which config you use for the build)

Dacmagic $429
Gamma1 $165-170
Gamma2 Around $200

you do the math
n yes comparison apples to apples oranges to oranges :)

are you sure about that. The parts alone are about $200 .
FWIR @headfi, It would take about $350 for a commisioned build esp. from a reputed builder like MisterX.
I would be very interested if its only $200.

Hello Kaushik,
if you are importing some parts from abroad, could you buy
WM8716 for me. (Beresford mod) .
PM suri immediately it is there in farnell site!
@gurubhai

in general chit chat .. we are doing a small group buy..
cost will go very less ,stay tuned.

Not much there yet tally3tally. But comment is that detail level is good, but in comparison with gamma1.
First challenge is to get kit now!:)

yep i know, this was so that ppl get a little bit of an idea

imho the kit part is not that big a challenge
all the parts are listed on the amb website

you just have to copy paste the required parts into a bom
and if two/three ppl order together,they would probably save on shipping too

customs should not be a problem as the orders are spread over AMB ,Mouser And Farnell....so for two people or maybe 3, clubbing the orders at specific websites should not attract any duties(<10k)

all that is required is some hard-work and a desire...:eek:hyeah:

You forgot another major requirement, the dough/cash/moolah! Credit card will do too!:lol:

The dual wolfson DACs in CA products certainly sound outstanding!! While my Marantz has a CS DAC I still find myself longing for a dual wolfson setup a year later!! The CA budget range CDP is reviewed everywhere as not being as musical as the Marantz, yet it had some appeal about the sound!

Regards
