AVR + Floor Standing Speakers

@efernand..thanks for the feedback on Jamo..the only reason i was getting inclined to that was because i was getting the 5 speaker setup for the cost of two floor standing speakers..so let me hear some more
@raghu..thanks for the details..it helps..and i am planning to do the same..first get the speakers and then go for the avrs which work well with those..so let me get to work :-)
@vtiwari..thanks a lot for these additional places..this widens my horizon and gives some more options to check out as many places dont have all the brands to audition.

Let me get to some more auditions and will get back with results. Thanks guys.

So let me jump in. I took help of guys here and AVSForum to build my first system, which is barely a month ago. I am still building it and my questions go on here. But let me share a few things that you will be going thru right now.

First of all, cut out all the percentages of how much of what you watch or hear. Look at it in simple terms do you want a system with a bent to movies or music. This is the biggest question to be answered. This will automatically take you to the right brands. I wanted a more musical one so opted for Cambridge and Focals. Cambridge CXR200 does not have many fancy things like Atmos, Audessy, etc..., but is possibly the most powerful AVR with 200watts at its price point, enough to drive good powerful 2 channel speakers or 5.1.

Once you have shortlisted your choice, get the price of the product from as many dealers as you can and possibly extract the best price out of the dealer who you think is knowledgeable and will provide you good after sales. Do not be shy of calling the distributors they sometimes will deal with you directly taking off the dealer margin and also providing after sales. Do not be in a rush, patience is a virtue in this as it is not a very organised sector here so the responsibility of finding the right price and good after sales is your own.

I could recommend a few since I have very recently auditioned some AVRs and speakers. But going thru this thread, I am afraid I really don't have clarity on the kind of system you are looking for. But enjoy the process. I just love how self-centred and indulgent this whole exercise is...lol!

Total Home Theatres, Nariman point - Tannoy, Dali, Q Acoustics, B&W

He also keeps Focals now as I directed the Focal distributor to him for 726 V demo. He liked the speakers so has decided to keep the brand.

Hi

Agree with "Terrible" views......end of the day you are the user John and hence need to decide what speakers you want, what you would like in the AVR, fancy gimmicks etc?

As stated in the beginning if you feel that in the coming years you will keep changing systems, better to start looking at pre owned systems and experiencing ....later you can change if required accordingly......

Hi John,

The S626 are studio speaker series from Jamo...they are nice ...movie experience is great, music is nice ..cant say great or outstanding....everyone would have their own tastes....my views are based on hearing all kinds of genres of music....

Key is to take your kind of music and audition the speakers available...check the C series from Jamo which is the concert series.....Cinebels (bandra)

Jamo C97 is much more superior to S626. c97 has very similar sound signature as Dali Zensor 7 but 30k more expensive.

@terrible
My requirement is very clear, and it has a bend towards music. The pegging order is Music, Series (DTH), Football, Movies and finally PS3. And I so completely agree that I am loving this entire process of going for demos, finding our more and more details about models. Every weekend is like checking out one thing or other and there is a different kind of thrill to it :))

@efernand
I might change but at the same time, it might not be very soon. I want to make sure that if I am investing around 1l for both speakers and AVR, then I pick something around which I can build my HT.

I plan to check out Audio Desire in this week as its close to my work place in Goregaon and been wanting to check Wharfedale. Total Home Theatre is something which I will go in the next weekend as I could see some of the most talked about brands are available at their place.
Let me give some details around the tower speakers I auditioned recently.

The place : Warehouse Direct, Bhandup
Auditon Room : They have a pretty big audition room and well setup, its like any other room so gives you the close to real feel. A strange thing was that the guy (Joseph) at the place said there would be a charge of 2k for the demo if I do not buy from them and just explore. I still agreed saying we will see that later and asked him to show, once the owner (Sanjay) arrived he said the first demo is free but rest would be chargeable.
Brands : They claim to sell all the brands, but for the audition they had Polk, Pure Acoustics, Jamo and Mission.
AVR Used for Demo : Marantz SR7007 (They sell Yamaha / Denon as well but the guy there claimed that the impact of AVR on the listening is almost negligible and did not have any other demo AVRs)

Range of Songs for Demo : Hindi (Movie Songs, Ghazals) / English (Pop / Hard Rock) / Regional Movies / Instrumental
Movies : We did not play too many but some select scenes from some Hindi movies

Pure Acoustics RB6
I wasnt quite impressed by what I heard from this set of speakers, the output seemed very ordinary and lacked the punch or that touch. All the songs I heard on this were not lively and I could feel that something was missing. The build of the speakers and the look was very good.

Jamo S626
I couldnt find much difference in the output from Jamo and Pure Acoustics, not very impressed by the sound output. In terms of the design and appearance, this was probably the best looking speakers. As suggested by someone in the thread, I checked if they have the cine version of Jamo C97 but they did not have that for auditions.

Polk TSX440T
There was a very clear and distinct difference between Polk and Jamo / Pure Accoustics. The sound was more lively and you could feel life in it, at times seemingly unrealistic types. The output gives you the feeling of a live performance happening right in front of you, its that lively and fresh. I was very impressed by this model and experimented a lot of songs on this. The appearance and design of this model is good, not as great as Jamo and I felt it lacks the finesse. Its pretty towering in terms of size and will occupy considerable area.
Though the guy suggested to go for RTi A5 but he did not have the same for audition, said the performance is much better and would fit in the budget.

Mission MX4
I got this model into the mix a bit late into the demo, by this time Polk was clearly ahead of the others in the demo. Once I heard this, I could feel this was going to a close call between Polk and Mission. Then I heard a lot of songs between these two models mainly to try to narrow at one. I noticed that Mission was handling Bass very well and without the woofer it could give the effect pretty well (this was better than Polk). The sound was very natural in Mission, sometimes giving the auditorium kinda feel. I was equally impressed by this as well but was not too sure about the brand name. Though the guy mentioned that this was originally part of Wharfedale and I need not worry about the brand, they are reliable and pretty good.

Costing and Offers
Pure Acoustics
On the RB6 I had auditioned, there is an offer going on and they are giving Pure Acoustics 5.0 (with surround, center, woofer) for around 61k. I wasnt very impressed with the output so did not probe further on this.

Jamo S626
There is an offer on this as well for the 5.0 (with surround and center, no woofer) for something inside 70k. Again, was not very impressed with this model and could not hear the C97.

Polk TSX 440T
The tower pair for this would come around 40k. The RTi A5 would come for around 56k

Mission Mx4
This was available for 52k.

AVRs
Even though I would be finalizing the speakers and then looking at AVRs. I had a brief discussion with the guy as he was convinced that there is no point in changing the Marantz AVR during the demo with anything else. Basis my requirement and the budget, he suggested to go for Yamaha Rx579 (for around 52k) or Denon 1200 (for around 50k). I had seen the specs of Yamaha RX 579 and it seemed to be fine for my requirement.

Hi John

Visit Cinebels at Bandra...before you do that, call them and inform before you go for the audition that you want to hear C series speakers.....this will ensure that the required speakers are ready and your trip is not wasted...

Hey John,

I too would suggest to call up before you visit any place and inquire what all is available for demo.

If you don't mind, where in goregaon do you work?

@vtiwari I have messaged you the details of where am working.

I had called up this place to advise about me coming for the Demo but broadly checked the brands and didnt ask for specific models in the brand. I will do that when am going next time to ensure trip is not wasted. Thanks for that tip.

John - went thru similar and prolonged process a few months back and took a long time before I decided.... suggest you try the Dali zensor 5/7, Polk RtiA5/7, in similar price bands that you've been looking at but I liked them better than the Polk Tsx and the Mission MX series, just my 2 bit.

Do not forget to listen to Focal. I was stunned at how superior the entry level series (chorus) was to many other brands. The ported subwoofer was also so good with music and movies

@nitin
I have heard Dali Zensor 7 but could not get zensor 5, same with Polk the guy didnt have demo for Rti ones. Let me try out at other places am planning to go.
@sash
I am not sure where I can get this brand in Mumbai, will definitely check out at the places I am going. Thanks.

You can listen to Rti A7 and A9 at ProFx in Atria Mall, Worli. I heard them a couple of months ago. Avoid A9 demo if it's not in your budget, it'll make A7 sound weaker. My two bit for these speakers is that I think they make for great HT speakers. For music I find them a little too sharp and lacks clarity in lows. Also I faced some amount of listening fatigue on this.

As for Focals you can get them at a few places in Mumbai. I got mine three weeks ago from Total Home Theatre in Nariman Point.
