Best ever deal for loudspeaker kits.

I am in for the X-LS Encore cabinets if its really for $25. Looks like we wont have hassle to have the precision cut with our local carpenter.

Thanks to Capt. Ji for his efforts. :clapping:

@trittya
you have mentioned about different materials for the cabinet. Does the sound get impacted depending on the material.

Dear Joseph,

The three materials I recommended are MDF, marine-grade ply and Baltic/Russian birch. AFAIK, there is NO perceptible sonic advantage (IF ANY) of plywood over MDF.

Some of the world's best speakers are made of MDF but it has to be braced with HARDWOOD. Therefore, sonically they are all at par. Now, structurally speaking, I would prefer ply over MDF for longer/larger/taller cabinets beacuse of two main reasons, one is that structurally, GOOD WELL-BONDED ply is marine grade ply (say, novateak) is superior in the long run as it is much less susceptible to expansion and contraction due to absorption/loss of moisture due to change in climatic/humidity conditions in most of the Indian sub-continent. The third option, Birch Ply would again be overkill for home-equipment. Firstly, its very expensive, about 4 times that of MDF cost and about twice as much as good marine-grade ply and secondly, its not really needed. Pro-audio folks use birch, NOT because of any sonic advantage but because of its durability, as the equipment is bound to get tossed around from venue to venue, one installation after another. Again, NO sonic advantage over the other two.

Sonically, the most exotic ply would be bamboo-ply which is highly weather-resistant, too, albeit not as much as marine-grade ply. The problem lies in getting it in the appropriate thicknes, but if you can, nothing like it.

BTW, one of the largest dealers in bamboo ply in India operates from Chennai. Details here
Marine Plywood,Flexible Plywood,Bamboo Plywood,MR Plywood,India

Here, you should be able to get all that you want and more incl pre-laminated/veneered MDF,HDF or all kinds of ply incl BWP(Boiling water-proof) ply (of course, for speakers that would be OVERKILL)

IMHO a decent(or competent ) carpenter should easily be able to do it,provided the drawings are good. This isnt rocket science.

As Mr. George stated, a competent carpenter can do a good job. Even if he does not have experience in making speaker cabinets, the flat pack can act as a reference for him to make the balance stuff as drawings are already available.

Yes, a competent or decent carpenter can make a good speaker cabinet, but you see, firstly, those two terms are clearly relative and not absolute and secondly, rocket science it may not be, but craftsmanship it surely is. There's another way of looking at it, LOL, there used to tooth-extractions by pavement-based "dental surgeons" before we had dentists touting their BDS/MDS degrees. Different matter that it used to be done with a pair of pliers and NO anesthesia. Though, I seriously doubt whether any roadside dentist could do a ROOT-CANAL-TREATMENT.

On a more serious note, if that gent/craftsman/wood-worker can give you a SONICALLY INERT/DEAD cabinet with proper bracing and sealing, then you are safe. The only point is that a craftsman who has made cabs before is aware of the crucial implications of the finer nuances, so its better, naturally.

I suggest, although I am not part of the build is that, Chennai-ites go to the out-sourced woodworkers of someone like Mr Mark Murugesan of AUDIOCRAFT or Mr John Thankachan of TORVIN, while FMs from B'luru/Hyd'bad can do likewise with those of Mr Siva of CORRSON or Mr Arasu Kumar of LAYA. Mumbaikars/Pune-ites can do likewise with Mr Rajeev D' Souza of LITHOS or Mr Vikram Joshi of RAAGA PROSOUND. Now where does that leave my brethren from Delhi? Well, Woodstock closed down shop long back but there are expert cabinet makers still around in and around Lajpat Rai Mkt as well as the fact that its worth finding out from Mr Nishi Mohan Nakra of ENBEE(since retired) as to where/from whom he used to get his cabs made. FM Parora spoke to him once in NOIDA and may be aware of his contact details.

Methinx it would work out better if the kits are shipped to their respective owners for getting cabs built locally/nearby as per specs/plans. That would save a lot on shipping the finished cabinet, too.

Anyone in North India who cant find a good cabinet maker can get i touch with me and tag along as I am going to get all my cabs for my LINE ARRAYS, Di-poles and down-firing sealed sub-woofer with a 21" driver made from FM Kanwar's woodworking lines. Now, thats an invitation, not a request, lets be clear on that. I, for one, love both mu music and my money and would not throw my hard-earned cash on something that I am not sure about.

At the end of the day, Gentlemen, the bottom-line to all members in this group buy-n-build is that, its your money, your kits and your cabinets. So, the choice, too ought to be yours. The only reason I wrote so much here is that I'd hate to see/know of a FM who is not happy with what he has acquired.

Enough said.

Wishing all of you the very best for the project.

Warm Regards as ever

Very well said.
@11:00AM third peg. Is everything alright? :D

BTW, I am also with the thought that cabinets could be built locally.Because imagine the weight and cost of shipping compared to cost of actual cabinet.

I caught one guy who will work for me on Sunday evening for 2 hrs max. So I think using 2 Sunday I can get the woodwork done. Sanding and painting (spray)/ some vinyl coating will be my headache. Still it is doable.

LOL, not that I am on my third peg, thats what/how my user-name is all about/came about,
teen peg pee k poora sach bolne wala
(someone who speaks the whole truth after three drinks).

The surname is a fall-out of the name. After "TRITTYA" one can only be "TUNN", LOL.

It also has a connotation ie its the third peg (spike) that is most crucial to articulation of equipment racks, LOL.

Regards.

Wow Borg, you have truly upped the ante.

OB-7 costs $895 & N3 costs $389

Actually he just needs a single N3S (sealed version) to use as a center channel. So I deduct $20 from the price for no floor spikes and then divide the price by two (since he just needs one of them).

I can also include the shielded woofers for this one by request.

Here is a nice build thread for the N3S: N3S Construction Photos

Hi Danny
Is is advisable to turn that tweeter 90 degrees and mount it vertically for a center speaker configuration or is it better to leave it that way??

TIA

Cheers

Guys,

Do we know what would be the customs duty on this shipment? Will we be paying the usual 27% over the cost of the product? Do we have the clarity on this aspect? I ask since I need to take this aspect into account if I want to upgrade to something else.

Thanks

Hi Capt,

Please count me too for the group buy. I need the following
1. A pair of X-LS Encore ($149)
2. A pair of CKD cabinets if the deal work out as mentioned in the thread.

Thanks

I remember Danny mentioned he can provide individual invoice if payment was made individually. Will this reduce the duty by any chance? Like a group buy shown to customs also :D

Yep, it measured the same if you rotate the tweeter. Keeping it facing vertical (regardless of the way the rest of the speaker is turned) keeps the best and most even off axis response in the horizontal plane.

this one looks like 90 deg rotated

Yep, and it looks good doesn't it. Ruben does a nice job with the cabinets that he builds for my custmers. I'll try to repost that pic here...

I dont know how this is going to pan out. If they see 2-3 sets for the same person, the customs will charge the duty. I dont see how to we can get around this. I am assuming that worst case, we should keep 27% or whatever as custom duty that will be charged.

Thanks

Hope knowledgeable FMs can give some info here. I know someone who has retired from Customs. Will check with him. Do post all your queries so that I don't bug him with queries daily.:D

in this suri says he paid 13% for the drivers from madisound
whether we get any reduction because these are not finished goods

Any speaker manufacturer willing to import these for us?:D.
In my previous company (which is located in an EHTP), i was told that no need to pay duty for any component they import which is used for manufacturing.

@Danny
can your contact at peerless help?, any savings in customs duty will be translated to more orders for you:D:D
