best possible FS and receiver for 1 lac budget For BASS lover

Hi all,

After doing some more auditioning I came to know about these more facts, Polk Audio RTi A7 cant handle rock songs, where as I found A9 handling it good, but it was like even the most expensive receiver/amp is not sufficient for A9. I dont know how to extract its power with a lower budget. Otherwise I like A9. Monitor Audio Rx6 is good, but I compared RX6 and Focal 726 on different weeks, so cant recollect exactly how they compare to each other. Any suggestions between these 2 regarding which one plays better rock and trance/dance music with a good bass ? KEF Q900 didnt get my attention. I guess I will be deciding bw Focal 726, MA RX6/RX8 (depending on price), RTi A9 (If I find a budget receiver/amp which will be decent) . Can any one compare these speakers with PSB T6 for rock/trance as that day when I auditioned, I felt it couldnt stand, but that was the initial days of auditioning. So I am ready to audition it again if I have to. kindly pour in your suggestions.

Hi Binish,

PSB T6 is value for money speakers with great thump.For rock and trance you need very bright system and hardly any good brand design their system this way except JBL. In my view why dont you start with the used amplifier of any brand and add T6 to it. or get the entire system old. and one more thing find the person who is of the same interest(rock/trance/basshead) and ask him for suggestion.

I think you are trying to replicate the sound at a live venue or a club. These are created using pro amplifiers with solid specs and power supplies. And they are coupled to high sensitivity speakers with large drivers. Many sound reinforcement techniques are in use in these installations.

This is very difficult to replicate with off the shelf home audio gear. And a budget grade AV receiver with a measly power supply is the last thing that will need in such an installation. If at all you need to go with an AV receiver, get a good one. Then make a DIY subwoofer with solid cabinets with the largest driver you can find. There are many kits available. The moment you delegate bass duties to such a large active subwoofer, your av-amp will heave a sigh of relief (since it does not have to deal with swinging impedances at lower frequencies) and do a great job driving a pair of good quality bookshelf speakers.

Avoid slender floor standers or wimpy HT subwoofers.

I have been searching for almost 2 months now, mainly reading lots of posts in hifivision.com.. its a never ending ocean and if I had more time to investigate and invest, I understood that the system explained by squarewave and many others above is the one I was looking for. Anyways already 2 months of search has made my wife uneazy. (She thinks I m trying to make some rocket as I am continuously infront of the laptop) :lol: So I am planning to close it with something available off the shelf. I guess its a combination of stereo amp + floor standers + a good sub like rythmik. Eod all companies are good, but I felt PSB T6 the best in my ears. May be I will add the sub after 6 months or later as already T6 + 356 NAD DAC will cross my budget by a decent percentage.

Thank you all for you valuable inputs. It was a big learning session and couldnt have reached anywhere without the support of hifivision.. I will keep posted once the purchase has been done.

For PSB Image T6, you need an AV receiver having at least 100 watts per channel. This is not the ideal requirement, but a minimum requirement. I have auditioned Marantz SR5006 (same as SR5008) before and compared with NAD C326 BEE stereo amp. The main difference I found was that SR5007 didn't have that solid lower midrange when compared with NAD C326 BEE. Though this is an unfair comparison (AV receiver vs stereo amp), I just did that out of my own curiosity.

At the same time, I found NAD T757 AV receiver to be good for music as well and I can say that it has all the required characters of a stereo int amp. So if you want an AV receiver which can be good for both Music and movies, I can recommend NAD T757 and Arcam FMJ 400. These receivers belong to the mid-range category and they cost more than a lakh.

Your other option could be to go for a slow upgrade. Get Marantz SR5007-or-SR5008 (at least) and get an used/new stereo amp as part of your future upgrade. Yes, Marantz receivers are good. You have lots of other options that you can try (Onkyo, Pioneer, etc). If you insist on Marantz, then SR5007/SR5008 is the recommended one if you have a budget limit. Marantz SR6007/SR6008 is the next higher model that you can think of. You can visit hifimart to check the prices.

The Pioneer LX receivers can drive your speakers well even at low volumes, also HK AVRs may not be feature rich but they are loaded with power . You can try auditioning your speakers with both pioneer and Harman Kardon AVRs. If you have plans to expand to a home cinema I'd suggest you to wait up for more time and go with a pre-power setup from Emotiva or Marantz(Expensive).

A very big thanks to hifivision, through which only I even came to know that speakers go beyond sony, philips etc and I learnt to know music. I received my PSB T6 and NAD 356 DAC last week. Extremely happy with the performance. But I am continuously travelling for some official purpose. So I am not getting enough time to sit and enjoy the combination. But initial impression - I didnt make a mistake . I really appreciate the patience and knowledge poured by the members and will request you to continue to share your knowledge as its difficult to find such experts anywhere else

Congratulations on your purchase !!! I have been doing some reading in the forum for some time now and I must say that I am impressed with the knowledge of many here. I am too a home theater enthusiast and looking forward to buying my first set of speakers and other components. I agree to the fact that the best way would be to take a demo and compare apples to apples. However I have not had the time to do that. I am really hoping that the seniors / gurus in this forum can help me as well. Here is my situation -

I am currently in US and moving back to India (New Delhi) in another 2-3 months max. I am looking to buy a good home theater setup (5.1) for my living room approx 24 X 14. I have been doing a lot of research (a lot) on the net reading various forums, many reviews etc. Below is the list I am leaning towards -

Floor Standing Speakers:
PSB 6, Paradigm Monitor 7 or 9, RTI A7
Purpose: Movies music 50/50
Budget: $1,000 to $1,300
Question:
1. Which one would be recommended? I do not have a dedicated home theater room hence sound levels will need to be monitored as to not disurb neighbours
2. What would be the price of these in India?
In US, A7 is $1,000 (pair), Monitor 7 - 900 a pair, Monitor 9 - ~$1,000 and PSB T6 $1,300 a pair. Does it make sense to buy in India. Budget is max $1,300 a pair. Please share the price in New Delhi for the above.

Surround and center - Havent got there yet. May be A3 from Polk or Center 4 from PSB... not sure yet.

Sub - again not decided. I was originally leaning towards A7, with A3 and CSI A4 along with Polk PSW woofer (around $250)

Receiver: Sony DN840 ($450)- highly rated by Cnet and other sites. Will it be sufficient to power the speakers or Onkyo NR626 ($500)or Denon X2000 ($650). Budget max $650. Though I would love to have wifi and bluetooth availability

I am no audio experts but just read product reviews. I am also confused between receiver and amplifier. I guess I will need to understand the purpose and what would suit me.

So I would make a humble request to members to help me with my situation. I am tired of surfing the web and reading reviews from popular web sites. I just need suggestions from someone who has carefully examined the above and can give a non bias view to what should one buy.
